Overview
Udaipur, formerly known as Rangamati, is a town on the Gomati river in Tripura, about 55 km from Agartala, and was the capital of the state under the Manikya dynasty. It is best known for the Tripura Sundari Temple, popularly called Matabari, one of the 51 Shakta pithas, built by Maharaja Dhanya Manikya in 1501 on a small hillock said to resemble the back of a tortoise. The Kalyan Sagar lake lies beside the temple, and the town, known as a "lake city", has other temples such as the Bhubaneswari Temple.
