Overview
Swamimalai is a panchayat town near Kumbakonam in Thanjavur district, Tamil Nadu, on the banks of the Kaveri. It is the site of the Swaminatha Swamy Temple, one of the six abodes (Arupadaiveedu) of Murugan, where tradition holds that Murugan explained the meaning of the Pranava mantra (Om) to his father Shiva and is therefore worshipped as Swaminatha Swami. The town is also known for its bronze icons, recognised as a Geographical Indication by the Government of India.
