Overview
Pushkar is an ancient temple town on the shore of Pushkar Lake, about 10 km northwest of Ajmer in Rajasthan. Tradition holds that Brahma dropped a lotus here, creating the lake, and the town is named after the Sanskrit word for lotus; the lake, ringed by 52 ghats, is revered as Tirtha Raj, the king of pilgrimage sites. Its red-spired Brahma Temple is one of the very few temples dedicated to Brahma, and the town hosts the annual Pushkar Fair around Kartik Purnima.
