Overview
Palani is a town in Dindigul district of Tamil Nadu at the foot of the Palani Hills, an offshoot of the Western Ghats. Atop its Sivagiri hill stands the Dhandayuthapani Swamy Temple, one of the Six Abodes of Murugan, where he is worshipped as a young renunciant with a staff after the legend of the fruit of knowledge. Pilgrims climb the hill by steps, winch railway or rope car, and many carry kavadi, especially at Thaipusam; the temple's panchamritam prasadam carries a Geographical Indication.
