Overview
Omkareshwar, also called Mandhata or Shivapuri, is a riverine island in the Narmada River in Khandwa district, Madhya Pradesh, whose shape is said to resemble the sacred syllable Om. It is home to the Omkareshwar Jyotirlinga, one of the twelve Jyotirlingas of Shiva, while the related Mamleshwar temple stands on the mainland on the southern bank of the Narmada. The town lies at the confluence of the Narmada and Kaveri rivers and is associated with Adi Shankara, who is said to have met his guru Govinda Bhagavatpada in a cave here.
