Overview
Bhubaneswar, the capital of Odisha, is dubbed the "Temple City" and its old town was historically known as Ekamra Kshetra and Chakra Kshetra; most of its older temples, in the Kalinga style, were built between the 8th and 12th centuries. Its name derives from Tribhubaneswara, "Lord of the Three Worlds", referring to Shiva. The Lingaraja Temple, the city's largest and still active in worship, is its principal shrine, and with Puri and Konark the city forms Odisha's "Golden Triangle".
