In the river lived a grumpy serpent named Kaliya.
In the river lived a grumpy serpent named Kaliya. His anger made the water dark, and everyone was afraid. One day Krishna came and — splash! — jumped right in. Kaliya rose up, hissing. But Krishna was not afraid. He hopped lightly onto the serpent’s heads and began to dance — tap, tap, tap! — as if it were a game. He danced until Kaliya grew calm and tired. “I’m sorry,” said the serpent softly. “I won’t trouble anyone again.” Krishna smiled kindly. “Then go in peace,” and let Kaliya swim away to a new home. The water turned clear and bright, and everyone cheered.
