Rāma had to go and live in the forest for a long time.
Rāma had to go and live in the forest for a long time. While he was away, the people wanted his brother Bharata to be the king. But Bharata loved Rāma so much that he said, “No! Only Rāma should be king. I will not take his place.” So Bharata walked all the way to the forest to ask Rāma to come home. But Rāma had made a promise, so he could not return yet. Then Bharata had an idea. “Please give me your sandals,” he said. He carried Rāma’s sandals home and placed them gently on the throne. Every day Bharata looked after the kingdom for Rāma, waiting and waiting until his dear brother came back home at last.
