Overview
Sringeri is a hill town and taluk headquarters in Chikmagalur district of Karnataka, on the banks of the Tunga river. It is the seat of the Sringeri Sharada Peetham, one of the four cardinal pīṭhas that, according to tradition, Adi Shankara established to preserve Advaita Vedānta, and which has historically coordinated Smārta tradition and monastic activities. The Sharadamba temple, dedicated to Saraswati as Sharadamba, gives the site its name, while the 14th-century Vidyashankara temple is noted for its blend of Hoysala and Vijayanagara styles.
