Overview
Rameswaram is a town on Pamban Island in Ramanathapuram district, separated from the Indian mainland by the Pamban channel and linked to it by the Pamban Bridge. It is counted among the four Char Dham pilgrimage sites and is home to the Ramanathaswamy Temple, one of the twelve Jyotirlinga shrines. Tradition associates the town with the Ramayana, holding that Rama worshipped Shiva here.
