Overview
Mahabaleshwar is a hill town on the Sahyadri range of the Western Ghats in Satara district, Maharashtra. It is a place of pilgrimage because the Krishna River, considered sacred by Hindus, has its origin here along with several other rivers. Old (Kshetra) Mahabaleshwar is home to the Mahabaleshwar Temple of Lord Shiva, whose self-originated linga gives the region its name, and to the Panchganga and Krishnabai temples, both associated with the source of the Krishna. The British later developed the town as a hill station and the summer capital of the Bombay Presidency.
