Overview
Kathmandu, the capital of Nepal, lies in the Kathmandu Valley and has a Hindu-majority population. Its Pashupatinath Temple, on the banks of the sacred Bagmati River, is dedicated to Pashupati, a manifestation of Shiva, and is considered one of the holiest pilgrimage sites for Hindus; it is one of the seven monument groups of the Kathmandu Valley UNESCO World Heritage Site, listed in 1979. Tradition, following the Shiva Purana, links Pashupatinath with Kedarnath in the legend of the Pandavas' search for Shiva. The nearby Guhyeshwari Temple, a Shakta pitha, and the ancient Changu Narayan Temple of Vishnu are also important to Hindus.
