Overview
Kanchipuram, often called the city of a thousand temples, is a historic town in northern Tamil Nadu known also for its Kanjeevaram silk saris. It is a major pilgrimage centre for Shaiva, Vaishnava and Shakta devotees alike, with 15 of the 108 Divya Desams and several Shiva temples hymned in the Tevaram. Tradition associates Adi Shankara with the Kamakshi Amman temple and the founding of the Kanchi matha.
