अहिंसासत्यास्तेयब्रह्मचर्यापरिग्रहा यमाः
Non-violence, truthfulness, non-stealing, chastity, and non-possessiveness are the restraints.
जातिदेशकालसमयानवच्छिन्नाः सार्वभौमा महाव्रतम्
These are universal great vows, unconditioned by class, place, time, or circumstance.
शौचसंतोषतपःस्वाध्यायेश्वरप्रणिधानानि नियमाः
Purity, contentment, austerity, self-study, and dedication to the Lord are the observances.
वितर्कबाधने प्रतिपक्षभावनम्
When disturbed by negative thoughts, cultivate their opposites.
वितर्का हिंसादयः कृतकारितानुमोदिता लोभक्रोधमोहपूर्वका मृदुमध्याधिमात्रा दुःखाज्ञानानन्तफला इति प्रतिपक्षभावनम्
Negative thoughts such as violence, whether done, caused, or approved, arising from greed, anger, or delusion, whether mild, moderate, or intense, result in endless suffering and ignorance; thus, cultivate their opposites.
अहिंसाप्रतिष्ठायां तत्संनिधौ वैरत्यागः
When one is established in non-violence, hostility ceases in his presence.
सत्यप्रतिष्ठायां क्रियाफलाश्रयत्वम्
When one is established in truthfulness, actions bear their fruit.
अस्तेयप्रतिष्ठायां सर्वरत्नोपस्थानम्
When one is established in non-stealing, all jewels come to him.
ब्रह्मचर्यप्रतिष्ठायां वीर्यलाभः
When one is established in chastity, vigor is gained.
अपरिग्रहस्थैर्ये जन्मकथंतासंबोधः
When one is firm in non-possessiveness, knowledge of the how and why of birth arises.
शौचात् स्वाङ्गजुगुप्सा परैर् असंसर्गः
From purity arises distaste for one's own body and avoidance of contact with others.
सत्त्वशुद्धिसौमनस्यैकाग्र्येन्द्रियजयात्मदर्शनयोग्यत्वानि च
As a result, there is clarity of mind, cheerfulness, one-pointedness, mastery over the senses, and fitness for self-realization.
संतोषाद् अनुत्तमः सुखलाभः
Through contentment, unsurpassed happiness is attained.
कायेन्द्रियसिद्धिर् अशुद्धिक्षयात् तपसः
By austerity, impurities are destroyed, resulting in perfection of body and senses.
स्वाध्यायाद् इष्टदेवतासंप्रयोगः
Through study of sacred texts, union with one's chosen deity is achieved.
समाधिसिद्धिर् ईश्वरप्रणिधानात्
Through devotion to the Lord, perfection in samadhi is attained.
स्थिरसुखम् आसनम्
Posture is steady and comfortable.
प्रयत्नशैथिल्यानन्तसमापत्तिभ्याम्
It is accomplished by relaxation of effort and absorption in the infinite.
ततो द्वन्द्वानभिघातः
Then, one is undisturbed by the pairs of opposites.
तस्मिन् सति श्वासप्रश्वासयोर् गतिविच्छेदः प्राणायामः
When this is established, regulation of the flow of inhalation and exhalation is called pranayama.
बाह्याभ्यन्तरस्तम्भवृत्तिर् देशकालसंख्याभिः परिदृष्टो दीर्घसूक्ष्मः
Its movements—external, internal, and suspended—are observed according to place, time, and number, becoming prolonged and subtle.
बाह्याभ्यन्तरविषयाक्षेपी चतुर्थः
The fourth kind transcends external and internal objects.
ततः क्षीयते प्रकाशावरणम्
Then, the covering over the light is diminished.
धारणासु च योग्यता मनसः
And the mind becomes fit for concentration.
स्वविषयासंप्रयोगे चित्तस्वरूपानुकार इवेन्द्रियाणां प्रत्याहारः
Withdrawal of the senses is as if the senses imitate the nature of the mind by not engaging with their own objects.
ततः परमा वश्यतेन्द्रियाणाम्
Then comes supreme mastery over the senses.
देशबन्धश् चित्तस्य धारणा
Concentration is the binding of the mind to a single place.
तत्र प्रत्ययैकतानता ध्यानम्
In that, uninterrupted flow of awareness toward the object is meditation.
तद् एवार्थमात्रनिर्भासं स्वरूपशून्यम् इव समाधिः
That very state, in which only the object remains illuminated and the self appears as if absent, is samadhi.
त्रयम् एकत्र संयमः
The three together constitute samyama when applied to one point.
