ते प्रतिप्रसवहेयाः सूक्ष्माः
These subtle afflictions are to be resolved by returning to their source.
ध्यानहेयास् तद्वृत्तयः
Their active forms are to be abandoned through meditation.
क्लेशमूलः कर्माशयो दृष्टादृष्टजन्मवेदनीयः
Karmic impressions rooted in affliction are experienced in seen and unseen births.
सति मूले तद्विपाको जात्यायुर्भोगाः
As long as the root exists, its fruition is birth, lifespan, and experience.
ते ह्लादपरितापफलाः पुण्यापुण्यहेतुत्वात्
They bear fruits of joy or suffering, according to virtue or vice as their cause.
परिणामतापसंस्कारदुःखैर् गुणवृत्तिविरोधाच् च दुःखम् एव सर्वं विवेकिनः
For the discerning, all is suffering because of the pain of change, anxiety, latent impressions, and the conflict of the qualities.
हेयं दुःखम् अनागतम्
The suffering that has not yet come is to be avoided.
द्रष्टृदृश्ययोः संयोगो हेयहेतुः
The cause of what is to be avoided is the conjunction of the seer and the seen.
प्रकाशक्रियास्थितिशीलं भूतेन्द्रियात्मकं भोगापवर्गार्थं दृश्यम्
The seen is of the nature of illumination, activity, and inertia, composed of elements and senses, and exists for experience and liberation.
विशेषाविशेषलिङ्गमात्रालिङ्गानि गुणपर्वाणि
The stages of the qualities are particular, universal, marked, and unmarked.
द्रष्टा दृशिमात्रः शुद्धो ऽपि प्रत्ययानुपश्यः
The seer is pure consciousness, though seeing through the mind’s perceptions.
तदर्थ एव दृश्यस्यात्मा
The essence of the seen exists solely for that purpose.
कृतार्थं प्रति नष्टम् अप्य् अनष्टं तदन्यसाधारणत्वात्
Even though it ceases to exist for one who has attained the goal, it remains for others because it is common to them.
स्वस्वामिशक्त्योः स्वरूपोपलब्धिहेतुः संयोगः
The conjunction is the cause for the realization of the true nature of the power of the self and the owner.
तस्य हेतुर् अविद्या
The cause of this conjunction is ignorance.
तदभावात् संयोगाभावो हानं तद्दृशेः कैवल्यम्
With the absence of that, the conjunction ceases; this is the liberation of the seer.
विवेकख्यातिर् अविप्लवा हानोपायः
Unwavering discriminative knowledge is the means to this cessation.
तस्य सप्तधा प्रान्तभूमिः प्रज्ञा
For him, wisdom reaches its utmost limit in seven stages.
योगाङ्गानुष्ठानाद् अशुद्धिक्षये ज्ञानदीप्तिर् आ विवेकख्यातेः
Through the practice of the limbs of yoga, when impurities are destroyed, the light of knowledge arises up to discriminative knowledge.
यमनियमासनप्राणायामप्रत्याहारधारणाध्यानसमाधयो ऽष्टाव् अङ्गानि
Restraint, observance, posture, breath control, withdrawal, concentration, meditation, and absorption are the eight limbs.
अहिंसासत्यास्तेयब्रह्मचर्यापरिग्रहा यमाः
Non-violence, truthfulness, non-stealing, chastity, and non-possessiveness are the restraints.
जातिदेशकालसमयानवच्छिन्नाः सार्वभौमा महाव्रतम्
These are universal great vows, unconditioned by class, place, time, or circumstance.
शौचसंतोषतपःस्वाध्यायेश्वरप्रणिधानानि नियमाः
Purity, contentment, austerity, self-study, and dedication to the Lord are the observances.
वितर्कबाधने प्रतिपक्षभावनम्
When disturbed by negative thoughts, cultivate their opposites.
वितर्का हिंसादयः कृतकारितानुमोदिता लोभक्रोधमोहपूर्वका मृदुमध्याधिमात्रा दुःखाज्ञानानन्तफला इति प्रतिपक्षभावनम्
Negative thoughts such as violence, whether done, caused, or approved, arising from greed, anger, or delusion, whether mild, moderate, or intense, result in endless suffering and ignorance; thus, cultivate their opposites.
अहिंसाप्रतिष्ठायां तत्संनिधौ वैरत्यागः
When one is established in non-violence, hostility ceases in his presence.
सत्यप्रतिष्ठायां क्रियाफलाश्रयत्वम्
When one is established in truthfulness, actions bear their fruit.
अस्तेयप्रतिष्ठायां सर्वरत्नोपस्थानम्
When one is established in non-stealing, all jewels come to him.
ब्रह्मचर्यप्रतिष्ठायां वीर्यलाभः
When one is established in chastity, vigor is gained.
अपरिग्रहस्थैर्ये जन्मकथंतासंबोधः
When one is firm in non-possessiveness, knowledge of the how and why of birth arises.
