Then, after standing silent for a moment, Janaka again reflected inwardly on the life of people, with a mind inclined toward peace.
What is there here worth acquiring, that I should strive to obtain it? To what object should I attach my resolve, when nothing is free from destruction?
What is gained by being active, or by being inactive? There is nothing at all that is said to be free from decay.
Whether active or inactive, this body has arisen from the unreal; for me, established in the real, the stable, the pure consciousness—what loss can there be?
I do not desire what I have not obtained, nor do I abandon what has come to me; I remain at ease in my own self—let whatever is mine, be mine.
For me, there is no gain from action done or not done here; whatever is to be attained, whether real or unreal, by the existent, comes through action or inaction.
Whether I act or do not act, whether actions are proper or improper, there is nothing here that, once attained, is truly desirable to me.
Therefore, let this body perform the natural action that arises in due course; but if its limbs are motionless, what will it accomplish?
When the mind is steady, free from desire, equal, and without attraction, then the activity or inactivity of the body and its parts are equal in their result.
When the mind ceases to be the agent and enjoyer in the fruits of actions, whether splendid or not, then, for people, even what is done is as if not done.
That firm conviction which arises within a person regarding actions—he becomes identified with that; I have reached the state free from affliction, and I wholly abandon both firmness and lack of firmness within.
Thus reflecting, Janaka rose to perform the action that had come to him, unattached, just as the sun rises each day.
Having abandoned, by his own mind, desires for what is pleasant or unpleasant, he acted as circumstances arose, remaining awake as if in deep sleep.
Having completed the duties of that day, preceded by respectful worship, one spent the night alone, likewise absorbed in the play of meditation.
Making the mind tranquil and unified, with the wanderings toward objects calmed, as the night waned, he awakened his awareness in this way.
O mind, your restless expansion does not bring happiness to the self; come to peace, for from peace, dear one, you attain true happiness.
Just as you lightly entertain waves of thought, so, O mind, the expanse of your worldly existence grows accordingly.
As a tree becomes hundred-branched by a single stream, so, O cunning one, you attain endless complexity through desire for enjoyment.
These creations of worldly existence arise from the play of webs of thought; therefore, abandoning varied thinking, you should enter tranquility.
Beautiful one, weigh this fleeting creation of worldly existence; if you find its essence, then rely upon that alone.
Abandoning attachment to this, and the craving for perception of objects, take hold of that which is mine; do not let go, and dwell with the desire for purity.
Whether this visible world is real or unreal, whether it arises or fades away, O noble one, do not let yourself be swayed by its qualities or faults.
You have not the slightest connection with the objects you perceive; how can there be any relationship with something whose very form does not truly exist?
You are not unreal, nor is this real; the idea of a relationship between the real and the unreal is a curious and unprecedented string of words.
If this is unreal and you are real, even so, O beautiful one, tell me: what kind of association can there be between the real and the unreal, as between the living and the dead?
If only you and the perceived object exist, both of the nature of reality, and both always abiding, then how could there arise any movement such as joy or sorrow?
Therefore, do not be deluded, do not indulge in excitement; establish a mind that is undisturbed, O noble one, and abandon the state of worldly existence.
Like the fruit of the tinduka tree, do not let the impurity of delusion arise and burn within yourself in vain, O misguided one; do not fall into dullness.
There is nothing here so exalted that by attaining it you reach supreme fulfillment; relying on that, forcibly abandon fickleness and attain steadfast courage, O deceitful mind.
Thus, contemplating in this way within his own sovereignty, King Janaka performed all his duties and, possessing steadfast intellect, was never deluded.
