सेन्द्रचापं विलोलेन कुसुमोत्कररेणुना । मञ्जरीपिञ्जरं श्यामं विद्युत्वन्तम् इवाम्बुदम्
With the restless pollen from heaps of flowers, bearing an Indra's bow, the dark mass of blossoms appeared like a raincloud with lightning.
सहस्रभुजशाखाढ्यं पूरिताकाशकोटरम् । विश्वरूपम् इवोन्नृत्तं चन्द्रार्ककृतकुण्डलम्
With a thousand-armed branches, filling the expanse of the sky, it appeared as if the cosmic form itself were dancing, adorned with earrings of the moon and sun.
तले निषण्णनागेन्द्रं व्योम्नि तारागणाकुलम् । लतापुष्पमयं मध्ये भूमण्डलम् इवापरम्
At its base sat a great king of mountains, while above, the sky was crowded with stars; in the midst, it resembled another earth, woven of flowering vines.
पितामहम् इवाशेषशैलकाननशाखिनाम् । फलपल्लवपुष्पाणां कोशम् एकम् इवावनौ
Like the grandsire of all the trees and forests, it was a single repository on earth for fruits, tender shoots, and blossoms.
दधानं कलिकाजालं स्थगितं पुष्पधूलिभिः । कच्छेष्व् अर्ककरच्छन्नताराजालम् इवाम्बरम्
It bore clusters of buds, concealed by the dust of flowers, like the sky in the riverbanks veiled by the sun's rays and a network of stars.
विलोलविहगैस् स्कन्धैः कुलायकुलसङ्कुलैः । वलितं भूतलं लोललोकैर् जनपदैर् इव
Its branches, swaying with restless birds and crowded with nests, made the earth appear as if it were filled with lively villages of people.
मञ्जरीसुपताकाढ्यं लतामण्डपमण्डितम् । पुष्पमक्कोलधवलं पुष्पप्रकरपूरितम्
Adorned with banners of blossoming sprays and festooned with bowers of vines, it shone white with masses of flowers, overflowing with heaps of blossoms.
कूजच्चकोरचमरशुककोकिलशारिकम् । घनस्तबकसञ्छन्नकुहराग्रगवाक्षकम्
Filled with the calls of partridges, antelopes, parrots, cuckoos, and starlings, its hollowed branches were like windows hidden beneath dense clusters of flowers.
सञ्चरत्पक्षिजनतं मदमन्थरकोटरम् । सर्वासां वनदेवीनाम् अन्तःपुरम् इवोत्तमम्
Its hollows, languid with the intoxication of birds moving within, were like the finest inner chambers of all the woodland goddesses.
ब्रुडद्भृङ्गतरङ्गौघैः पुष्पकेसरराशिभिः । राजमानं पतन्तीभिस् सरिद्भिर् इव पर्वतम्
With swarms of bees and waves of fragrance, and heaps of flower-pollen, it shone, as if mountain streams were cascading down a mountain.
भ्रमद्भिः पुष्पपत्त्रौघैर् मन्दवातविलासिभिः । वर्धमानैर् वृतस्कन्धं शुभ्राभ्रैर् इव भूधरम्

मातङ्गघटघृष्टेन जानुस्तम्भेन पीठिना । आभोगिना बद्धपदं तटेनेव महाचलम्
With its base pressed by the knees and broad backs of elephants rubbing against it, it stood firm, like a great mountain held fast by its own slopes.
विचित्रवर्णपक्षाणां स्कन्धकोटरचारिणाम् । वृतं खगानां वृन्देन भूतानाम् इव शृङ्गिणम्
Filled with flocks of birds of many-colored wings, moving through the hollows of its branches, it was like a horned mountain crowded with various beings.
स्तबकाङ्गुलिजालेन लोलेनाभिनयक्रियाम् । दिशन्तम् इव वल्लीनां प्रनृत्तानां वनानिलैः
With the restless network of its clustered twigs, it seemed to gesture, as if the forest winds made the dancing vines perform.
कश्चिद् एव निराशो मे नार्थी चापैति तुष्टितः । नृत्यन्तम् इव पुष्पाढ्यैर् लतावलयवल्गनैः
Only one who is free from desire departs content; it appeared to dance, with garlands of flowers swaying like circling vines.
लताकान्तैककान्तत्वाच् छृङ्गाररसनिर्भरम् । काकल्येव प्रगायन्तं मत्तालिजननिस्स्वनैः
Because it was beloved only by the vines, it overflowed with the flavor of love, as if singing melodiously with the calls of intoxicated bees.
आराद् उन्मुक्तकुसुमं सिद्धानां व्योमचारिणाम् । स्वागतानीव कुर्वाणं कोकिलालिकुलारवैः
From afar, with its newly blossomed flowers, it welcomed the sky-traveling siddhas, as if greeting them with the cries of cuckoos and swarms of bees.
फलपुष्पलतोल्लासम् औन्नत्यं च महीरुहाम् । विहसन्तम् इवाच्छाभिः पुष्पकुट्मलदीप्तिभिः
The trees, with their fruits and blossoming flowers, seemed to rejoice in their abundance, as if laughing with the bright radiance of their buds and blooms.
पारिजातम् इवाजेतुम् ऊर्ध्वगैस् स्कन्धमण्डलैः । व्योमान्तर् अभिधावन्तम् अलम् उद्धुरकन्धरम्
Like a pārijāta tree striving to ascend, its branches and clusters reaching upward, it appeared to rush into the sky, its trunk boldly rising high.
मध्यभागस्फुरद्भृङ्गैस् स्तबकैर् घनपक्ष्मभिः । सहस्राक्षत्वम् अतुलैर् जेतुम् ऐन्द्रम् इवोद्यतम्
With swarms of bees humming in its midst, and dense clusters of thick-petaled flowers, it seemed poised to rival Indra himself with its incomparable thousand-eyed splendor.
कचत्कुसुमगुच्छाच्छफणामणिगणावृतम् । पातालाद् उत्थितं शेषम् इव व्योमदिदृक्षया
Adorned with clusters of shining flowers like the jeweled hoods of serpents, it rose from the earth like the serpent Śeṣa himself, eager to behold the sky.
रजसोद्धूलिताकारं द्वितीयम् इव शङ्करम् । छायया फलशालिन्या समस्तमुनिशङ्करम्
Its form, dust-laden, appeared like a second Śaṅkara; with its fruit-laden shade, it seemed to inspire awe in all the sages, just as Śaṅkara does.
निबिडदलनिबद्धभित्तिभागैः कुसुमलतानवमण्डपैर् उपेतम् । पुरम् इव गगने कदम्बवृक्षं खगकुलनागरसङ्कटं ददर्श
With dense, leafy branches forming natural walls, and flower-laden creepers creating pavilions, he saw the kadamba tree standing like a city in the sky, crowded with flocks of birds as if they were its citizens.
तम् अथासौ महाबुद्धिः फलपल्लवशालिनम् । आनन्दमन्थरमनाः पुष्परूपाचलोपमम्
Then that wise one, his mind slowed by joy, beheld the tree rich with fruits and tender leaves, resembling a mountain of blossoms.
कदम्बं रोदसीस्तम्भम् आरुरोह वनस्थितम् । एकार्णवगतं शौरिः कल्पवृक्षम् इवोन्नतम्
He climbed the kadamba tree, pillar of the forest, standing on the earth, just as Viṣṇu ascended the wish-fulfilling tree rising alone from the ocean.
तत्रासौ व्योमलग्नायाश् शाखायाः प्रान्तपल्लवे । विवेशाधिगताकाशम् ऐडूकप्रान्तबुद्धवत्
There, at the tip of a branch reaching into the sky, she entered the open space, like the mind of a monkey at the end of a branch.
अथोपविश्य मृदुनि नवपल्लवविष्टरे । क्षणम् आलोकितास् तेन दिशः कौतुकमन्थरम्
Then, sitting down on the soft, fresh bed of new leaves, she slowly gazed in wonder at the directions around her for a moment.
सरिदेकावलीरम्याश् शैलेन्द्रस्तनकुट्मलाः । निर्मलाकाशकवरा लोलनीलाम्बुदालकाः
She saw rows of rivers adorned with lovely banks, mountain peaks like the breasts of great hills, clear skies covered with clouds, and blue lotuses swaying gently.
नीलशाद्वलवसनाः पुष्पगौरवनाङ्गिकाः । गृहीतसागरापूर्णकलशाः पुरभूषणाः
Clad in blue-green grass, with limbs pale as flowers, bearing pitchers filled with the ocean's water, they adorned the city.
धृतप्रफुल्लपद्मिन्यस् सुगन्धिमुखमारुताः । ग्रामघुङ्घुमकाकल्यो निर्झरारवनूपुराः
Holding blossoming lotuses, with fragrant breezes for faces, the villages hummed with the calls of crows, and the waterfalls resounded like anklets.
