Even the mind of a demon torments those whose intellects are clouded by darkness; but for children whose inner faculties are pure, this does not occur due to their lack of inquiry.
As long as the radiance of consciousness within is veiled by the dense cloud of ego, it does not blossom, just as the night-lotus does not open.
When the notion 'I am' is truly wiped away, what room remains for the imagination of craving for hell, heaven, liberation, or anything else?
As long as the cloud of ego expands in the heart, the cluster of desires, like the buds of the kuṭaja flower, continues to unfold.
When the cloud of ego stands blocking the sun of awareness, only dullness remains—never any radiance at all.
This ego, which is near and yet falsely imagined by itself, brings only suffering, not joy—like a fever that confuses a child.
The ego, conceived in vain, gives rise to delusion, and produces endless cycles of worldly existence, just as restraints do for the misguided.
The notion 'This is me' arises from intense delusion—another kind of darkness—which, being the cause of misfortune in the world, neither truly exists nor will exist.
Whatever pleasure or pain arises here, like the movement of a firebrand, is merely the unfolding and play of the wheel of ego.
The painful sprout of ego, once implanted in the heart, becomes a forest of worldly existence, with a thousand branches, difficult to cut down.
The sense of 'I' is the sprout of the inexhaustible trees of birth; their countless branches spread wide as the thoughts of 'this is mine.'
Objects, arising from the stirrings of latent impressions, appear like the crackling of dry wood in the wind, or like the clamor of waves in a row.
You, free from the sense of 'I,' should restrain the wheel of worldly existence, whose great hub is the sense of 'I,' from turning within yourself.
As long as the darkness of ego spreads in the forest of man, so long do these goblins of anxious thoughts dance about, intoxicated.
The wretched man seized by the goblin of ego—no rituals, no mantras can bring peace to such a helpless one.
When the pure Self, like a spotless mirror, abides as pure consciousness, the reflection of ego appears in it; so what can truly be said of the person?
The marvel of ego is not the true nature of reality, O Raghava; this is a phenomenon created by latent tendencies, which ceases through earnest effort.
By contemplating, 'I am not, nor is there any wealth or pleasure or pain that is mine,' the sense of ego does not arise.
By inwardly reflecting, 'This splendor of illusion is false—what concern have I with attachment or aversion?' the sense of ego does not arise.
By calmly conducting oneself with the understanding, 'I am not in the self, nor in the visible splendor of this world,' the ego does not increase.
When, within, the notions of 'I' and 'world' are dissolved, and equanimity is clear, the ego does not function.
What is the nature of ego, and how is it abandoned, O Lord? When it is given up, with or without the body, what remains?
O Raghava, there are three kinds of ego in the three worlds; two are excellent, and the other should be abandoned—listen as I explain to you.
'I am all this universe; I am the supreme Self, the imperishable; there is nothing else'—this awareness is the highest form of ego.
This is for liberation, not for bondage, and is found in the liberated while living; the term 'ego' for this is merely conventional, not real.
I am entirely distinct from everything, finer than a hundredth part of a hair; or else, this awareness is the supreme second form of ego.
This is for liberation, not for bondage; for the one liberated while living, it exists. Its designation as ego is imagined, not actual.
This is merely the conviction: 'I am only hands, feet, and so on.' This third ego is worldly and insignificant.
This harmful ego must be abandoned; it is remembered as the enemy of others. When struck by it, a creature does not flourish again.
By this powerful enemy, which bestows various dominions, the mind of the world is diminished and sinks only in difficulties.
