स्थिरो भवतु मे देहस् सुखायास्तु धनं मम । इति बद्धधियां तेषां धैर्यम् अन्तर्धिम् आययौ
Let my body be steady, let my wealth be for my happiness—such thoughts bind the mind, and for them, courage disappears.
अवासनत्वाद् वपुषाम् अनास्थत्वात् सुरद्विषाम् । याभूत् प्रहारपरता मार्जितैवाशु साभवत्
Because bodies lack deep impressions and enemies of the gods lack stability, their inclination toward violence was quickly wiped away, as if swept clean.
कथं स्थिरा जगत्य् अस्मिन् भवेम इति चिन्तया । वेधिता दीनतां जग्मुः पद्मा इव निरम्भसः
Thinking, 'How can we remain secure in this world?' they were struck with anxiety and fell into dejection, like lotuses without water.
तेषां त्व् अर्थान्नपानेषु स्वाहङ्कृतिमतां रतिः । बभूव भवभावस्था भीषणा भवभागिनी
Among them, those who were attached to their own sense of self found pleasure in food and drink, remaining in a state of worldly existence, fierce and bound to the cycle of birth.
अथ तस्मिन् रणे भीत्या सापेक्षत्वम् उपाययुः । मत्तेभगणसंरब्धा वने हरिणका इव
Then, in that battle, out of fear, they became dependent, like deer in the forest surrounded by a herd of intoxicated elephants.
मरिष्यामो मरिष्याम इति चिन्ताहताशयाः । मन्दं मन्दं किल भ्रेमुः कुपितैरावणे रणे
Stricken by the thought, 'We will die, we will die,' their hopes wounded, they wandered slowly and sluggishly in the battle, as if in the wrath of Airavata.
शरीरैकार्थिनां तेषां भीतानां मरणाद् अति । अल्पसत्त्वतया मूर्ध्नि कृतम् आपत्प्रदं पदम्
For those who desired only bodily existence and were fearful, death placed a calamity-bringing step upon their heads due to their weakness.
अथ प्रम्लानसत्त्वास् ते हन्तुम् अग्रगतं भटम् । न शेकुर् इन्धनक्षीणा हविर् दग्धुम् इवाग्नयः
Then, their strength faded, they could not kill the foremost warrior, just as fires with depleted fuel cannot burn the offering.
विबुधानां प्रहरतां सुदस्युत्वम् उपागताः । क्षतविक्षतसर्वाङ्गास् तस्थुस् सामान्यवद्भटाः
While the gods struck, they became incapable of fighting, and the warriors, wounded and battered in every limb, stood as if ordinary.
बहुनात्र किम् उक्तेन मरणाद् भीतचेतसः । दैत्या देवेषु वल्गत्सु दुद्रुवुस् समराजिरात्
What need is there for many words here? The demons, their minds terrified by death, fled from the battlefield as the gods advanced.
तेषु द्रवत्सु सर्वेषु सर्वतो दानवाद्रिषु । दामव्यालकटाख्येषु विख्यातेष्व् असुरालये
As all of them fled, they ran in every direction among the mountains of the demons, into the renowned abodes of the asuras called Dama and Vyala.
तद्दैत्यसैन्यम् अपतत् खाद् विद्रुतम् इतस् ततः । कल्पान्तपवनाधूतं ताराजालम् इवाभितः
Then that army of demons fled in all directions, falling like a net of stars scattered by the wind at the end of an age.
अमराचलकुञ्जेषु शिखराणां शिलासु च । तटेषु वारिराशीनां पयोदपटलेषु च
In the mountain valleys of the gods, upon the peaks and rocks, on the shores of the oceans, and on the layers of clouds—
सागरावर्तगर्तेषु श्वभ्रेष्व् अथ सरित्सु च । जङ्गलेषु दिगन्तेषु ज्वलत्सु विपिनेषु च
In the whirlpools of the sea, in chasms and rivers, in deserts, at the ends of the directions, and in burning forests—
तद्रणोत्सन्नकोशेषु ग्रामेषु नगरेषु च । अटवीषूग्रयक्षासु मरुषूद्यद्दवाग्निषु
In the emptied treasuries of battlefields, in villages and cities, in forests haunted by fierce yakṣas, and in deserts where wildfires raged—
लोकालोकाचलान्तेषु पर्वतेषु ह्रदेषु च । अन्ध्रद्रमिडकाश्मीरपारसीकपुरेषु च
At the edge of the Lokāloka mountain, on mountains and in lakes, and in the cities of Andhra, Drāmiḍa, Kashmir, and Persia—
नानाम्भोधितरङ्गासु गङ्गाजलघटासु च । द्वीपान्तरेषु दूरेषु जम्बूषण्डलतासु च
Among the waves of various oceans, in the water-pots of the Ganges, on distant islands, and in the groves of Jambū trees—
सर्वतः पर्वताकाराः पतितास् ते सुरारयः । विस्फोटिताङ्गचरणा विभिन्नकरबाहवः
Everywhere, those enemies of the gods fell, mountain-like, with limbs and feet shattered, and arms and hands broken apart.
शाखालग्नान्त्रतन्त्रीका मुक्तरक्तवहच्छटाः । व्यस्ताङ्गखुरमूर्धानो निष्क्रान्तकुपितेक्षणाः
With entrails tangled in branches, streams of blood flowing free, bodies and heads scattered, and eyes glaring in wrath as life departed.
स्वायुधावलनावेगच्छिन्नकङ्कटहेतयः । दूरापातविपर्यस्तपतन्नानाविधांशुकाः
Their armor was shattered by the force of their own weapons; their garments, torn and scattered, fell in various ways from afar.
कण्ठलग्नशिरस्त्राणखटत्कारोग्रभीतयः । शिलाशितशिखाप्रोतदेहभागावलम्बिनः
With helmets clinging to their throats, the harsh clatter instilled terror; fragments of their bodies hung pierced by sharp rocks.
शल्मल्यग्रदृढापातप्रोतकङ्कटशङ्कवः । सुशिलाफलकास्फालशतधाशीर्णमस्तकाः
Their breastplates were impaled upon the sturdy spikes of silk-cotton trees; their heads, split in a hundred ways, struck hard against stone slabs.
सर्व एव सकलासु सशस्त्राः पातमात्रसमनन्तरम् एव । दिक्षु नाशम् अगमन्न् असुरेन्द्राः पांसवो ऽम्बुधिगताः पयसीव
All the demon chiefs, armed in every way, perished instantly upon falling; their dust vanished in all directions, like water absorbed by the ocean.
जज्वाल ज्वलितः कोपी कल्पान्ताग्निर् इव ज्वलन् । शम्बरश् शमितानीको दामव्यालकटान् प्रति
Shambara, ablaze with wrath like the fire at the end of an age, burned fiercely against the Dāmavyālakaṭa demons.
शम्बरस्य भयाद् गत्वा पातालम् अथ सप्तमम् । दामव्यालकटास् तस्थुस् त्यक्त्वा दानवमण्डलम्
Out of fear of Shambara, the Dāmavyālakaṭa demons abandoned the demon host and fled to the seventh subterranean realm, where they remained.
यमस्य किङ्करास् तत्र वेतालत्रासनक्षमाः । कुकुहा नाम तिष्ठन्ति नरकार्णवपालकाः
There, the servants of Yama, capable of frightening ghouls, known as Kukuhā, stand as guardians of the ocean of hell.
चिन्ता इव घनाकारा दुहितॄस् तु क्रमाद् ददुः
Like worries taking the form of dense clouds, they gradually gave their daughters.
तैस् सार्धं नीतवन्तस् ते तत्र दामादयो ऽवधिम् । दशवर्षसहस्रान्ताम् आत्तानन्तकुवासनाः
Together with them, those executioners spent their time there, their minds seized by relentless, destructive tendencies, for a span of ten thousand years.
इयं मे वनिता रम्या ममेयं प्रभुतेति च । कुकुहस्नेहबद्धानां कालस् तेषां व्यवर्तत
‘This beautiful woman is mine, she belongs to me, I am her master’—thus, bound by false attachments of affection, their time passed.
धर्मराजो ऽथ तं देशं कदाचित् समुपाययौ । महानरककार्याणां विचारार्थं यदृच्छया
Then, at some point, the Lord of Dharma arrived in that place by chance, to investigate matters concerning the great hells.
