तत् तावद् युक्तियुद्धेन तान् प्रबोधयतामराः । यावद् अभ्यासवशतो भविष्यन्ति सवासनाः
Therefore, awaken those immortals through the battle of discernment, until, by the force of repeated practice, they become possessed of tendencies.
ततो वध्या भविष्यन्ति भवतां बद्धभावनाः । तृष्णाप्रोताशया लोके न केचन नपेलवाः
Then, those whose thoughts are bound will become fit for destruction; in this world, none are weak who are woven with the expectation of thirst.
समविषमम् इदं जगत् समग्रं समुपगतं स्थिरतां स्ववासनातः । चलति च लहरीभरो यथाब्धाव् अत इह सैव चिकित्स्यतां प्रयाता
This world, both equal and unequal, has attained stability entirely from its own tendencies; and it moves like a mass of waves in the ocean—therefore, here, that very tendency should be treated and brought to an end.
सुरास् त्व् आकर्ण्य तद्वाक्यं जग्मुस् स्वाम् अभितो दिशम् । कमलामोदम् आदाय वनमालाम् इवानिलाः
The gods, having heard those words, departed each to their own direction, carrying with them the fragrance of lotuses, like breezes bearing garlands from the forest.
दिनानि कतिचित् स्वेषु कान्तेषु स्थिरकान्तिषु । द्विरेफा इव पद्मेषु मन्दिरेषु विशश्रमुः
For several days, in their own splendid and radiant abodes, they rested, like bees in steadfast lotuses.
कञ्चित् कालं समासाद्य स्वात्मोदयकरं शुभम् । चक्रुर् दुन्दुभिनिर्घोषं प्रलयाभ्ररवोपमम्
After some time, having attained auspiciousness that brings about the rise of the Self, they sounded drums with a roar like thunderclouds at dissolution.
अथ दैत्यैस् सह व्योम्नि तैः पातालतलोत्थितैः । कालक्षेपकरं घोरं पुनर् युद्धम् अवर्तत
Then, together with the demons who had arisen from the netherworld, a dreadful and time-consuming battle again unfolded in the sky.
ववुर् असिशरशक्तिमुद्गरौघा मुसुलगदापरशूग्रचक्रसङ्घाः । अशनिगिरिशिलाहुताशवृक्षा अहिगरुडादिमुखानि चायुधानि
There blew torrents of swords, arrows, spears, maces, clubs, other weapons, axes, sharp discs, thunderbolts, mountains, rocks, blazing trees, and weapons in the forms of serpents, Garuḍa, and others.
मायाकृतायुधमहाम्बुघनप्रवाहा क्षिप्रं प्रति प्रतिदिशं परिनिर्जगाम । पाषाणपर्वतमहीतटवृक्षलक्षक्षुब्धाम्बुपूरघनघोषवती नदी द्राक्
A mighty river, created by illusion, swiftly surged in every direction, with the tumult of countless stones, mountains, trees from the earth's edge, and waves of water, resounding like a mass of thunderclouds.
मध्यप्रवाहवहदुल्मुकशूलशैलप्रासासिकुन्तशरतोमरमुद्गरेण । गङ्गोपमाम्बुवलितामरमन्दिरेण सर्वासु दिक्ष्व् अशनिवर्षणकर्षणेन
With blazing torches, spears, rocks, lances, swords, arrows, javelins, and maces carried in the central current, and with celestial mansions surrounded by waters like the Ganges, in all directions, there was a drawing down of showers of missiles.
पृथ्व्यादिदारुणशरीरमयी प्रहारदानग्रहे गगनरश्मिशरीरकैव । या योपशाम्यति सुरासुरसिद्धसेना मायाकृता पुनर् उदेति रसेन सैव
The river, whose body was formed from the earth and other elements, fierce in giving blows and seizing gifts, and whose form in the sky was made of rays, subsides when the armies of gods, demons, and siddhas are pacified; but, created by illusion, it rises again with its own essence.
शैलोपमायुधविघट्टितभूधराणि रक्ताम्बुपूरपरिपूर्णमहार्णवानि । देवासुरेन्द्रसुरशैलविरूढकुन्ततालीवनानि ककुभां वदनान्य् अथासन्
Mountains struck by weapons like mighty rocks, vast oceans filled to the brim with crimson waters, and forests of tall palm trees growing atop peaks of gods and demons—these became the faces of the heavens.
उद्गीर्णकुन्तशरशक्तिगदासिचक्रा हेलानिगीर्णसुरदानवमुक्तशैला । काषक्वणत्क्रकचदन्तनखोग्रमाला जीवान्वितापतद् अथायससिंहवृष्टिः
Spears, arrows, javelins, maces, swords, and discs hurled forth, mountains cast aside by gods and demons in their fury, and the clattering of sharp teeth and nails—thus, a rain of lions, alive and fierce, descended upon the earth.
उज्ज्वाललोचनविषज्वलनातपोद्यद्दिग्दाहदर्शितयुगान्तदिनेशसेना । उड्डीयमानपरिदीर्घमहीमहीध्रा मत्ताब्धिवद् विषधरावलिर् उल्ललास
With blazing eyes, venomous flames, and scorching heat, the armies of the sun at the end of the age revealed the burning of the quarters; serpents, like intoxicated oceans, soared and spread across the length and breadth of the earth and its mountains.
उन्नादवज्रमकरोत्करकर्करान्तरिक्षाब्धिवीचिवलयैर् वलिताचलेन्द्रैः । आसीज् जगत् सकलम् एव सुसङ्कटाङ्गम् आवर्तिभिर् विविधहेतिनदीप्रवाहैः
Thunderous roars, the crashing of makaras, and the swirling waves of the sky-ocean, encircled by mighty mountains, made the entire world constricted and perilous, as torrents from various rivers of weapons surged and whirled.
शैलास्त्रशस्त्रगरुडाचलमालितोच्चनागाङ्गनासुरगणाङ्गनम् अन्तरिक्षम् । आसीत् क्षणं जलधिभिः क्षणम् अग्निपूरैः पूर्णं क्षणं दिनकरैः क्षणम् अन्धकारैः
The sky was adorned with mountains, weapons, and Garuda-peaks, and filled with the bodies of great serpents and demon hosts; for a moment it was flooded with clouds, then with fire, then with sunlight, and then with darkness.
गरुडगुडगुडाकुलान्तरिक्षप्रविसृतहेतिहुताशपर्वतौघैः । जगद् अभवद् असह्यकल्पकालज्वलितसुरालयभूतलान्तरालम्
The world became intolerable, its realms ablaze with the fires of the age, as Garuda's thunderous cries filled the sky and torrents of weapon-fire and mountain-masses poured forth, burning the abodes of the gods and the spaces between them.
उदपतन् वसुधातलतो ऽसुरा गगनम् अद्रितटाद् इव पक्षिणः । अतिबलाद् अपतन् विबुधा भुवि प्रलयचालितशैलशिला इव
The demons soared up from the earth, like birds from mountain slopes ascending the sky; while the gods, overwhelmed, fell to the ground, like rocks shaken loose from mountains in the dissolution.
शरीररूढोन्नतहेतिवृक्षवनावलीलग्नमहाग्निदाहाः । सुरासुराः प्रापुर् अथाम्बरान्तः कल्पानिलान्दोलितशैलशोभाम्
Gods and demons, their bodies scorched by the great fires clinging to the forests of weapon-trees, reached the heights of the sky, which shone with mountains swayed by the winds of the age.
सुरासुराद्रीन्द्रशरीरमुक्तै रक्तप्रवाहैर् अभितो भ्रमद्भिः । बभार पूर्णं परितो ऽम्बराब्धिस् सन्ध्यारुणोद्यच्छतगङ्गम् अङ्गम्
The sky, filled all around with streams of blood flowing from the bodies of gods, demons, and mountain-lords, shone crimson like the rising Ganges of dawn, encircling the heavens and the ocean.
गिरिवर्षणम् अम्बुवर्षणं विविधोग्रायुधवर्षणं तथा । विषमाशनिवर्षणं च ते शमम् अन्योऽन्यम् अथाग्निवर्षणम्
There was a rain of mountains, a rain of water, and likewise a rain of fierce and varied weapons; there was also a rain of uneven stones, and then a rain of fire upon each other.
अनयन् नयमार्गकोविदा दलिताशेषगिरीन्द्रभित्तयः । ससृजुश् च समं समन्ततः ककुबङ्गेष्व् इव पुष्पवर्षणम्
Those skilled in the ways of battle, having shattered the walls of all great mountains, unleashed everywhere at once a shower of flowers, as if on the branches of the quarters.
देवासुरास् सरससङ्गरसम्भ्रमार्ता अन्योऽन्यम् अङ्गदलनाकुलहेतिहस्ताः । दामेन्द्रडिम्बदहनाः पृथुपीठपीठैः कीर्णासृजो नभसि बभ्रमुर् आक्षिपन्तः
Gods and demons, agitated by the tumult of battle, with arms wielding weapons in confusion as they struck one another, their bodies blazing with the fire of Indra's thunder, and seated on vast thrones, wandered the sky, scattering streams of blood.
छिन्नैश् शिरःकरभुजोरुभरैर् भ्रमद्भिर् आकाशकोशशलभैर् अशिवैस् तदानीम् । आसीज् जगज्जठरम् अभ्रवरैर् इवोग्रैर् आभास्करं स्थगितदिक्तटशैलजालम्
At that time, the world’s belly was filled with severed heads, hands, arms, and thighs, whirling like ominous locusts in the sky, and with dense clouds, fierce as mountains, blocking the sun and the mountain ranges at the edges of the quarters.
मत्तानलं क्षुब्धजलानिलार्कं दलद्वनं शीर्णसुरासुरौघम् । ब्रह्माण्डम् आखण्डितकुड्यकोणम् अकालकल्पान्तकरालम् आसीत्
The universe became dreadful as at the end of time, with wild fire, agitated water, wind, and sun, forests torn apart, hosts of gods and demons destroyed, and the walls and corners of the cosmic egg unbroken.
भ्रान्तं भृशं भ्रमितदिक्तटम् अद्रिकूटैर् आत्मप्रमाणघनहेतिहतै रणद्भिः । कूजद्भिर् आर्तिभिर् इवोग्रगुहौघवातैः क्रन्दद्भिर् आपतितसिंहरवैर् अदभ्रैः
It was in turmoil, the directions thrown into confusion by mountain peaks struck and scattered by heavy weapons, resounding like the cries of fierce herds of cave-dwelling beasts, and echoing with the roars of lions as clouds crashed down.
मायानदीजलधियोधघनाग्निदाहैर् वृक्षैस् सुरासुरशवैर् अचलैश् शिलौघैः । भ्रान्तं शिरस्त्रशरशक्तिगदास्त्रशस्त्रैर् वातावकीर्णवनपर्णवद् अम्बरान्तः
The sky was filled with rivers and oceans of illusion, clouds of fire and smoke, trees, the corpses of gods and demons, mountains, and showers of rocks; it was scattered with heads, arrows, spears, maces, missiles, and weapons, like leaves blown through the forest by the wind.
अद्रीन्द्रपक्षपरिमाणगमागमैकदुर्वारहस्ततलदारुणताडनैर् द्राक् । आसीत् पतद्भटशरीरगिरीन्द्रघातविभ्रष्टदेवपुरपूर्णजलार्णवौघः
With blows from hands, as irresistible as the coming and going of mountains' wings, the torrent of water—full as the ocean, released from the ruined cities of the gods by the fall of warriors' bodies like mountains—rushed forth at once.
घनघुङ्घुमपूरितान्तरिक्षा क्षतजाक्षालितभूधरान्तराला । रुधिरह्रदवृत्तिवर्तिनी वा भुवनाभोगगुहा तदाकुलाभूत्
The sky was filled with the deep, thunderous roar; the spaces between the mountains were washed with blood; the world-cave became agitated, as if it were a pool of blood, swirling with the currents of battle.
अनन्तदिक्प्रसरविकारकारिणी क्षयोदयोन्मुखसुखदुःखदायिनी । रणक्रियासुरसुरसङ्घसङ्कटा तदाभवत् खलु सदृशीह संसृतेः
That tumult of battle, crowded with gods and demons, spreading endlessly in all directions, bringing both pleasure and pain, creation and destruction, truly became just like this cycle of worldly existence.
