तस्मिन् मायाबले सुप्ते देशान्तरगते तथा । तत्सैन्यान्तरम् आजग्मुश् छिद्रं प्राप्य किलामराः
While that master of illusion slept, having gone to another land, the gods found an opening and entered the midst of his army.
अथ शम्बरदैत्येन दुद्रिकह्वद्रुमादयः । रक्षार्थं मत्तसामन्तास् स्वसेनासु नियोजिताः
Then, by the demon Shambara, powerful chiefs like Dudrika and Hvadrumā were appointed to guard his forces.
तान् अप्य् अन्तरम् आसाद्य जघ्नुर् गीर्वाणनायकाः । व्योमान्तरचराश् श्येनाः कलविङ्कान् इवाकुलान्
But the leaders of the gods, seizing the opportunity, attacked them as hawks attack flocks of bewildered finches flying in the sky.
सेनापतीन् पुनश् चान्यांश् चकारासुरसत्तमः । चपलान् उद्भटारावांस् तरङ्गान् इव सागरः
The foremost of asuras again appointed other commanders, restless and loud-voiced, like waves upon the sea.
देवास् तान् अपि तस्याशु जघ्नुस् तेन स कोपवान् । जगामामरनाशाय परिपूर्णस् त्रिविष्टपम्
The gods swiftly slew them as well, which made him furious; filled with wrath, he advanced toward the celestial realm, intent on its destruction.
तत्रास्य मायाभीतास् ते सुरा अन्तर्धिम् आययुः । मेरुकाननकुञ्जेषु मृगा गौरीगुरोर् इव
There, the gods, frightened by his magic, vanished from sight, like deer fleeing into the groves of Mount Meru at the approach of a tawny lion.
क्रन्दत्क्षुद्रामरगणं बाष्पक्लिन्नसुरीमुखम् । शून्यं ददर्श स स्वर्गं कल्पक्षीणजगत्समम्
He saw heaven empty, with the faces of the gods wet with tears, and the hosts of lesser immortals wailing—like a world at the end of an age.
विहृत्य कुपितस् तत्र लब्धम् आहृत्य शम्बरः । लोकपालपुरीर् दग्ध्वा जगामात्मीयम् आलयम्
After raging there, Shambara seized what he could, burned the cities of the guardians of the worlds, and returned to his own abode.
एवं दृढतरीभूते द्वेषे दानवदेवयोः । देवास् स्वर्गं परित्यज्य दिक्षु जग्मुर् अदर्शनम्
Thus, as the enmity between gods and demons grew ever stronger, the gods abandoned heaven and disappeared in all directions.
अथ शम्बरदैत्येन ये ये सेनाधिनायकाः । क्रियन्ते यत्नतस् तांस् ताञ् जघ्नुर् यत्नपरास् सुराः
Then, whichever commanders Shambara the demon appointed with great effort, those very ones the gods, striving earnestly, slew.
यावद् उद्वेगम् आपन्नश् शम्बरः कोपवान् भृशम् । तार्णो ऽभि वातम् अनल इव जज्वाल चोच्छ्वसन्
Until Shambara, seized by intense anger, flared up like fire fanned by the wind, breathing hard.
त्रैलोक्यम् अपि चान्विष्य न देवांल् लब्धवान् अथ । परेणापि प्रयत्नेन सुकृतानीव दुष्कृती
Even after searching through the three worlds, he did not find the gods; with utmost effort, he found only the virtuous as one finds the wicked.
ससर्ज मायया घोरान् असुरांस् त्रीन् महाबलान् । बलरक्षार्थम् उदितान् कालान् मूर्तिम् इवास्थितान्
By his power of illusion, he created three fierce and mighty demons, who arose for the protection of strength, standing as embodiments of time.
निर्मिता मायया भीमाः कल्पपादपबाहवः । उदगुस् ते महाकायाः पक्षक्षुब्धा इवाद्रयः
Formed by illusion, these terrifying beings had arms like the branches of wish-fulfilling trees; they were enormous in size, rising up like mountains agitated by wings.
दामा व्यालः कटश् चेति नामभिः परिलाञ्छिताः । यथाप्राप्तैककर्तारश् चेतनामात्रधर्मिणः
Named Dama, Vyala, and Kata, they were marked by these names; each acted as they found opportunity, possessing only the nature of consciousness.
अभावात् कर्मणां ते च प्राक्तनानाम् अवासनाः । निर्विकल्पकचिन्मात्रपरिस्पन्दैककर्मिणः
Because of the absence of impressions from previous actions, they lacked any latent tendencies; their activity was solely the vibration of pure consciousness, free from distinctions.
कर्मबीजं कलां तन्वीं दधाना मननात्मिकाम् । अपुष्टां कृत्रिमाम् अन्तर् आदायोदयम् आगताः
Holding the subtle seed of action, which is of the nature of thought, yet unstrengthened and artificial within, they came into being.
पारम्पर्येण ते ह्य् अत्र काकतालीयवद् भटाः । प्रकृताम् अनुवर्तन्ते क्रियाम् उज्झितवासनाः
By succession, these warriors here act like the chance meeting of a crow and a palm fruit; they follow the natural course of action, having abandoned latent tendencies.
अर्धसुप्ता यथा बालास् स्वाङ्गैर् इङ्गन्ति केवलम् । वासनात्माभिमानाभ्यां हीनास् ते तद्वद् एव हि
Just as children half-asleep move only their own limbs, so too, lacking identification with impressions and ego, they act in the same way.
नाभिपातं न चापातं विदुस् ते न पलायनम् । न जीवितं न मरणं न रणं च जयाजयौ
They knew neither falling nor being struck down, nor flight; neither life nor death, nor battle, nor victory and defeat.
केवलं सैनिकान् अग्रे दृष्ट्वाभिहननोद्यतान् । अभिजघ्नुः परान् आजौ प्रहारदलिताद्रयः
Simply seeing the soldiers before them, poised to strike, they attacked the enemies in battle, shattering them like mountains split by blows.
शम्बरश् चिन्तयाम् आस परितुष्टमनाः पुरे । विजेष्यते हि मत्सेना मायासुरसुरक्षिता
Śambara, his mind greatly satisfied, thought within his city: 'Indeed, my army, protected by the demon of illusion, will be victorious.'
इष्टानिष्टाभिर् एते हि वासनाभिस् समुज्झिताः । ततो रणे बिभ्यति नो विद्रवन्ति च न स्थिराः
For these (enemies) are stripped of their desires and aversions; therefore, in battle, they neither fear nor flee, nor do they remain steadfast.
यदैते न पलायन्ते देवैर् अभिहता अपि । तदैषातिबला सेना ममेदानीं व्यवस्थिता
When these do not flee even when struck by the gods, then truly my army, endowed with extraordinary strength, now stands firm.
अतिबलासुरदोर्द्रुमपालिता मम चमूस् स्थिरताम् अलम् एष्यति । अमरवारणदन्तविघट्टनेष्व् अमरपर्वतहेममही यथा
Guarded by the mighty demon Atibalā, my troops will surely attain stability, just as the golden earth of the celestial mountain remains unmoved even when struck by the tusks of the best of heavenly elephants.
दैत्यास् सागरकुञ्जेभ्यः कन्दरेभ्यस् सुराचलात् । उदगुर् भीमनिर्ह्रादास् सपक्षगिरिलीलया
The demons, with terrifying roars, rose up from the ocean caves, from the mountain ravines, and from the peaks of the celestial mountain, as if playfully lifting winged mountains.
रोदसीकुहरं हस्तप्रहारहतभास्करम् । दानवाः पूरयाम् आसुर् दामव्यालकटेरिताः
The demons, their bodies torn by the blows of celestial serpents, began to fill the hollow of the sky—its sun struck down by their hands.
अथोत्तस्थुर् निकुञ्जेभ्यः कन्दरेभ्यस् सुराचलात् । प्रलयान्त इवाक्षुब्धा भीतास् स्वर्वासिनां गणाः
Then, as if at the end of a cosmic dissolution, the terrified hosts of heaven-dwellers rose up from groves, caves, and the mountain of the gods.
देवासुरपताकिन्योस् तद् युद्धम् अभवत् तयोः । अकालोल्बणकल्पान्तभीषणं भुवनान्तरे
Between those two, a battle arose among the leaders of gods and demons, dreadful as the chaos of the world's end, in another realm.
पेतुः प्रलयपर्यस्तसचन्द्रार्काद्रिवद् दिवः । शिरांसि कुण्डलोद्वान्ततेजःपीततमांस्य् अधः
Heads fell from the sky, as if the moon and sun had been cast down by the force of dissolution, their flesh darkened by the brilliance of earrings.
