स्वया वासनया लोको यद् यत् कर्म करोति यः । स तथैव तद् आप्नोति नेतरस्यात्र कर्तृता
Whatever actions anyone in the world performs, driven by their own tendencies, that alone they obtain; there is no agency of another in this.
नानुसंहितम् अन्तर् यन् मनोवासनया स्वया । को नाम भुवने सो ऽस्ति तत् कर्तुं यस्य शक्तता
Who in this world has the power to accomplish that which is not already accompanied within by the inclination of one's own mind?
ये स्वर्गनरकाभोगा यास् स्वर्गनरकैषणाः । स्वमनोमननेन्दोस् स निष्ष्यन्दो मान्द्यदुःखदः
All enjoyments of heaven and hell, and all desires for heaven and hell, are but the outflow of one's own mind; their result is the dullness and suffering of inertia.
बहुनात्र किम् उक्तेन शब्दसन्दर्भकारिणा । उत्तिष्ठ भगवन् यामो यत्र ते तनयस् स्थितः
Why say much more here with elaborate words? Arise, O venerable one, let us go to where your son is situated.
सर्वं चित्तशरीरेण भुक्त्वा शुक्रः क्षणाद् इह । अद्येन्दुरश्मिसङ्घट्टात् समङ्गातापसस् स्थितः
Having experienced everything with the mental body, Śukra in a moment is now, by the union of the moon's rays, established in the heat of the sun.
तत्प्राणपवनश् चित्त्वयुक्त इन्द्वंशुगः फलम् । अवश्यायतया भूत्वा वीर्यत्वेन नरस् स्थितः
That vital wind, united with mind, bearing the fruit of the moon's rays, having become like rain, stands as virility in man.
इत्य् उक्त्वा भगवान् कालो हसन्न् इव जगद्गतीः । हस्ताद् धस्तेन जग्राह भृगुम् इन्दुम् इवांशुमान्
Having thus spoken, the venerable Kāla, as if smiling at the courses of the world, took Bhṛgu by the hand, just as the sun takes the moonbeam.
अहो नु चित्रा नियतेर् व्यवस्थेति वदञ् शनैः । भगवान् भृगुर् उत्तस्थाव् उदयाद्रेर् यथा रविः
Saying softly, 'Indeed, how wondrous are the arrangements of destiny,' the venerable Bhṛgu rose up like the sun from the eastern mountain.
तेजोनिधी सुसमसङ्गसमुत्थितौ तौ भातस् तदा वरवने सतमालजाले । तुल्योदयाव् इव नभस्य् अमले विहर्तुम् अभ्युद्यताव् अजलदौ सकलेन्दुसूर्यौ
Those two, arisen together like twin treasures of light, shone in the splendid forest amid the cluster of dark tamāla trees, like the full moon and sun ascending together in the clear sky, ready to roam as cloud and water-laden moon and sun.
इत्य् उक्तवत्य् अथ मुनौ दिवसो जगाम सायन्तनाय विधये ऽस्तम् इनो जगाम । स्नातुं सभा कृतनमस्करणा जगाम श्यामाक्षये रविकरैश् च सहाजगाम
After the sage had spoken thus, the day moved toward evening, and the sun set. The assembly, having offered their salutations, departed to bathe, accompanied by the gentle rays of the setting sun.
तौ शैलाद् अवरोहन्तौ दृष्टवन्तौ महाद्युती । नवहेमलताजालकुञ्जसुप्तान् नभश्चरान्
As they descended from the mountain, they saw celestial beings of great brilliance, sleeping in groves adorned with clusters of fresh golden creepers.
वल्लीवलयदोलाभिः क्रीडन्तीर् गगनाङ्गनाः । हरिणीमुग्धमुग्धाक्षिप्रेक्षितस्मारितोत्पलाः
Heavenly maidens played with vine bracelets and swings, their gazes innocent like deer, recalling lotuses with their enchanting eyes.
सिंहान् अध्यासितोत्तुङ्गशिलाशकलविष्टरान् । धृताकारान् इवोत्साहान् हेलादृष्टजगत्त्रयान्
They saw lions seated upon lofty fragments of rock, appearing as embodiments of vigor, gazing indifferently upon the three worlds.
तालोत्ताललतान्यस्तहस्तान् हस्तिघटापतीन् । मदावलेपनिद्रालून् मदान् मूर्तिम् इवास्थितान्
They saw elephant chiefs, their hands resting on tall palm and creeper trunks, drowsy from intoxication, standing as if embodying pride.
पुष्पकेसररक्ताङ्गपवनारुणवालधीन् । चञ्चलांश् चमरांश् चारु भूभृन्मङ्गलचालितान्
They saw camaras with bodies reddened by flower pollen and wind, their tails fluttering, beautifully moving in auspicious patterns across the earth.
कृताजस्रपतत्पुष्पधारासारनिमज्जनान् । भ्रमरान् सर्जखर्जूरशाखाशरणतां गतान्
They saw bees continually immersed in showers of falling flowers, taking refuge among the branches of sarja and date palms.
परस्परफलाघातक्ष्वेडाविजितकीचकान् । धातुपाटलसद्वक्त्रान् मर्कटान् अटनोत्कटान्
They saw monkeys, fierce in their wandering, with faces colored by minerals, making loud noises and defeating the reeds with their mutual fruit-throwing.
लतावितानसञ्छन्नसानूपवनमन्दिरान् । सिद्धान् अमरनारीभिर् मन्दारकुसुमाहतान्
Mountain slopes, groves, and palaces concealed beneath canopies of vines, where accomplished beings are attended by celestial women, adorned with mandāra flowers.
धातुपाटलनिर्वारिपयोदपटसंवृतान् । तटान् अजनसंसर्गान् बौद्धान् प्रव्राजितान् इव
Banks covered by layers of minerals and veiled by sheets of clouds, untouched by people, resembling Buddhist ascetics who have renounced worldly contact.
सरितः कुन्दमन्दारपिनद्धलहरीघटाः । सागरोत्कतयेवात्तमधुमासप्रसाधनाः
Rivers whose waves are bound by clusters of jasmine and mandāra, as if the ocean itself had seized them, decorated with the freshness of spring.
पुष्पभारपिनद्धाङ्गान् वृक्षान् पवनकम्पितान् । क्षीवान् इव मधुप्राप्तौ घूर्णन्मधुकरेक्षणान्
Trees shaken by the wind, their limbs weighed down by masses of flowers, appearing exhausted upon receiving honey, their bees swirling with restless eyes.
शैलराजश्रियं स्फीतां पश्यन्तौ ताव् इतस् ततः । प्राप्तवन्तौ वसुमतीं पुरपत्तनमण्डिताम्
Beholding the abundant splendor of the king of mountains, the two wandered here and there, and arrived at the earth adorned with cities and towns.
क्षणाद् अवापतुस् तत्र पुष्पलोलतरङ्गिणीम् । समङ्गां सरितं साधू सर्वपुष्पमयीम् इव
In a moment, they reached there a river whose waves played among flowers, beautiful and whole, as if entirely composed of blossoms.
ददर्शाथ तटे तस्याः कस्मिंश्चित् तनयं भृगुः । देहान्तरपरावृत्तं भावम् अन्यम् उपागतम्
Then, on its bank, Bhṛgu saw a certain youth who had turned away from his former body, having attained a different state of being.
शान्तेन्द्रियं समाधिस्थम् अचञ्चलमनोमृगम् । सुचिराद् इव विश्रान्तं सुचिरं श्रमशान्तये
His senses were tranquil, established in meditation, his mind steady and unmoving, as if he had rested for a long time, finding relief from prolonged fatigue.
चिन्तयन्तम् इवानन्ताश् चिरभुक्ताश् चिरोज्झिताः । संसारसागरगतीर् हर्षशोकनिरन्तराः
Those endless courses of worldly existence, filled with unceasing joy and sorrow, seem as if they are being contemplated—though long enjoyed, they have now been long abandoned.
नूनं निश्चलतां यातम् अतिभ्रमितचक्रवत् । अनन्तजगदावर्तविवर्तातिशयाद् इव
Surely, it has attained immovability, like a wheel that has spun excessively; as if due to the extraordinary turning of the infinite revolutions of the worlds.
एकान्तसंस्थितं कान्तं कान्त्यैकाकिनम् आश्रितम् । उपशान्तेहितं त्यक्तचित्तसम्भ्रमसङ्गमम्
He beheld him established in utter solitude, lovely, relying on his own radiance alone; his actions pacified, free from the agitation and confusion of the mind.
निर्विकल्पसमाधिस्थं विरतं द्वन्द्ववृत्तितः । हसन्तम् अखिला लोकगतीश् शीतलया धिया
Seated in the absorption beyond thought, withdrawn from the play of opposites, he beheld him smiling at all the courses of the worlds, with a mind cooled and serene.
विदिताखिलवृत्तान्तं विगताशेषकौतुकम् । निरस्तकल्पनाजालम् आलम्बितमहापदम्
He beheld him who knows all events, whose curiosity is entirely gone, who has dispelled the net of imagination, and who has taken refuge in the supreme state.
