इत्य् उक्त्वा पुष्पमृद्वङ्गी सा तस्य पतितोरसि । व्याघूर्णितालिनयना सुतराव् इव मञ्जरी
Having spoken thus, she of tender, flower-like limbs fell upon his chest, her eyes rolling like a cluster of bees, just as a blossom sways.
तौ दम्पती तत्र विलासकान्तौ विलेसतुस् तासु वनस्थलीषु । किञ्जल्कगौरानिलघूर्णितासु मत्तौ द्विरेफाव् इव पद्मिनीषु
That couple, radiant in their delight, wandered together in those forest clearings, like two intoxicated bees amidst lotuses swaying in the pale breeze.
मन्दारदामाकुलया वैबुधासवमत्तया । तदा तेन तया सार्धं द्वितीयेनामलेन्दुना
Amidst the groves thick with coral trees, intoxicated by the nectar of the gods, he then enjoyed with her, who was like a second spotless moon.
विहृतं मत्तहंसासु हेमपङ्कजिनीषु च । तटेष्व् अमरवाहिन्यास् सह किन्नरचारणैः
They roamed among golden-lotused ponds filled with drunken swans, and along the banks of the celestial river, together with kinnara and charana musicians.
पीतम् इन्दुदलस्यन्दि देवैस् सह रसायनम् । पारिजातलताजालनिलयेषु विलासिना
In bowers woven from parijata branches, they drank the nectar flowing from the moon, together with the gods and playful companions.
चारुचैत्ररथोद्यानलतादोलासु लीलया । चिरं विलसितं व्यग्रैस् सह विद्याधरीगणैः
In the charming swing-groves of Chaitraratha, they sported for a long time with the eager hosts of vidyadharas.
नन्दनोपवनाभोगो मन्दरेणेव वारिधिः । भृशम् उल्लोलतां नीतः प्रमथैस् सह शाम्भवैः
The expanse of Nandana's pleasure-gardens, with the Mandara mountain like an ocean, was made to surge with excitement by the hosts of Shiva's attendants.
बालहेमलताजालजटिलासु दरीषु च । भ्रान्तम् उन्मत्तरागेण मैरवीष्व् अब्जिनीष्व् इव
In caves tangled with young golden creepers, they wandered, mad with passion, like bees among the blooming lotuses of Meru.
कैलासवनकुञ्जेषु तया सह विलासिना । हारेन्दुधवला रात्रिः क्षपिता गणगीतिभिः
In the groves of Kailasa, with his beloved, he passed the moon-white night, filled with the songs of the hosts.
गन्धमादनशैलस्य विश्रम्योपरि सानुषु । सा तेन कनकाम्भोजैर् आपादम् अभिमण्डिता
She, adorned from head to toe with golden lotuses, rested with him upon the summits of Mount Gandhamadana.
लोकालोकतटान्तेषु विचित्राश्चर्यहारिषु । क्रीडितं कृतहासेन राम तेन तया सह
Together with her, Rama played and laughed in the wondrous, astonishing, and captivating regions at the edge of Lokāloka mountain.
मन्दरान्तरकच्छेषु सार्धं हरिणशावकैः । अवसत् स समाष् षष्टिं कल्पितामरमन्दिरः
He dwelled for sixty years, as if in a celestial palace, among the valleys of Mandara mountain, together with fawns.
क्षीरार्णवतटेष्व् अस्य वनितासहचारिणः । क्षीणं कृतयुगाद् अर्धं श्वेतद्वीपजनैस् सह
On the shores of the ocean of milk, accompanied by women, he spent half of the Krita age together with the inhabitants of Shvetadvipa.
गन्धर्वनगरोद्यानलीलाविरचनैर् असौ । सृष्टानन्तजगत्सृष्टेः कालस्यानुकृतिं गतः

अथावसद् असौ शुक्रः पुरन्दरपुरे पुनः । सुखं चतुर्युगान्य् अष्टौ हरिणेक्षणया सह
Then, once again, Shukra dwelled happily for eight cycles of four ages in the city of Purandara, together with the doe-eyed one.
पुण्यक्षयानुसन्धानात् ततश् चावनिमण्डले । तयैव सह मानिन्या पपातापहृताकृतिः
Then, as his merit was exhausted, he fell to the earthly realm together with that proud woman, his form deprived of its radiance.
परालूनसमस्ताङ्गो हृतस्यन्दननन्दनः । चिन्तापरवशो ध्वस्तस् समितीवाहतो भटः
His limbs shattered, deprived of his chariot and garden, he was overcome by anxiety and lay ruined, like a warrior struck down in battle.
पतितस्यावनौ तस्य चिन्तया सह दीर्घया । शरीरं शतधा यातं शिलापातीव निर्झरः
When he fell to the ground, together with his long brooding, his body was shattered into a hundred pieces, like a waterfall struck by a rock.
संशीर्णयोर् देहकयोश् चित्ते ते वासनावृते । विचेरतुस् तयोर् व्योम्नि निर्नीडौ विहगौ यथा
With both bodies destroyed and their minds veiled by impressions, the two wandered in the sky like nestless birds.
तत्राविविशतुश् चान्द्रं ते चित्ते रश्मिजालकम् । प्रालेयताम् उपेत्याशु शालिताम् अथ जग्मतुः
There, in their minds, they entered a moonlit lattice of rays; swiftly becoming icy, they then turned into rice plants.
शालींस् तान् भुक्तवान् पक्वान् दशार्णेषु द्विजोत्तमः । शौक्राञ् शुक्राङ्गनागर्भान् मालवेषु च भूपतिः
The best of twice-born ate those ripe rice grains in Daśārṇa, while the king in Mālava ate the grains that had grown from the seed in a woman's womb.
अजायतोशनाः पूर्वं दशार्णेषु द्विजोत्तमात् । नृपाद् उत्तमसौभाग्यान् मालवेषु तदङ्गना
In Daśārṇa, the best of twice-born first conceived from eating, and in Mālava, a woman conceived from the king's great fortune.
स तत्र ववृधे बालस् सा तत्र ववृधे ऽङ्गना । तौ पूर्वदम्पती जातौ स्वर्भ्रष्टाव् इव भूतले
There, the boy grew up, and there, the girl grew up; the former couple were born again on earth, as if fallen from heaven.
अथ षोडशवर्षो ऽभूच् छुक्रस् सारङ्गनामभृत् । पितुर् गृहे यौवनवाञ् श्रीमान् विप्रकुमारकः
Then, at sixteen years of age, Śukra, bearing the name Sāraṅga, was a handsome, youthful, and prosperous brāhmaṇa boy in his father's house.
मालानामसुरस्त्री सा कुमारी राजसद्मनि । भृङ्गेक्षणा गता वृद्धिं लता वरवने यथा
That asura maiden named Mālā, with bee-like eyes, grew up as a maiden in the royal palace, like a vine flourishing in a splendid forest.
राजपुत्री ततो माला पूजयाम् आस शङ्करम् । लभेयं प्राक्तनं सिद्धं पतिम् इत्य् अनिशं शुभा
Then the princess, with a pure heart, worshipped Śaṅkara with garlands, constantly praying, 'May I obtain my former accomplished husband.'
अथ मालवभूपस्य यज्ञे द्विजसभागतम् । माला ददर्श सारङ्गं पित्रा सह समागतम्
Later, at the sacrifice of the king of Mālava, as the assembly of brahmins gathered, Mālā saw Sāraṅga there, who had arrived together with her father.
तं दृष्ट्वा सानवद्याङ्गी प्राक्तनस्नेहभाविता । दृष्टचन्द्रेन्दुमणिवत् स्नेहस्विन्नाङ्गिका बभौ
Seeing him, she—faultless in form and filled with affection from their former bond—shone with limbs moist with love, like a moonstone touched by the moon.
ततो यज्ञसभामध्ये दाशार्णद्विजदारकम् । भर्तृत्वे वरयाम् आस सा माला मालवात्मजा
Then, in the midst of the sacrificial assembly, Mālā, daughter of the Mālava king, chose the young brāhmin from Daśārṇa as her husband.
क्रमात् कृतविवाहाय तस्मै वार्धकजर्जरः । मालवेशो ऽखिलं राज्यं प्रतिपाद्य वनं ययौ
In due course, after their marriage, the aged and infirm king of Mālava bestowed the entire kingdom upon him and departed for the forest.
