The wise are revered in the world; I consider those like you worthy of service. By your company, I blossom like a lotus in the presence of the moon.
Just as fragrance arises from the contact of flowers, so does auspiciousness arise from association with the virtuous; as the lotus blooms by the touch of the sun.
Indeed, from association with the great, suffering no longer afflicts one; for who, holding a lamp's flame in hand, is ever overcome by darkness?
By my power, you two, the suns of the earth, have arrived in this wilderness; therefore, you are worthy of worship—now quickly tell me your auspicious purpose.
In our land, the cluster of demon clans in the forest greatly afflicts the people, always causing pain in their hearts.
When all the people were constantly seized by a severe epidemic in my domain, I left by night for that reason.
When the pains in people's hearts do not subside with medicines, then I set out, seeking mantras and such as spoken by someone like you.
And my endeavor is for the restraint of people like you, who harm the innocent; let that effort bring success, that is enough.
Let this much, O auspicious one, be accepted by you: that henceforth, no living being should be harmed by you.
Very well, from today onward, O Lord, I shall act thus without falsehood; truly, from now on, there is nothing that ought to be harmed by me.
If it is so, O lotus-eyed one, what would happen to your bodily sustenance, remaining as you wish, when you partake of another's body?
For six hundred years, O King, after awakening and being absorbed in samadhi, the thought of eating has arisen in me, and today I desire food.
Now, having gone to the mountain peak, she, the living Sālabhañjikā, sits in meditation, unmoving, enjoying happiness as long as she wishes.
Having established the practice of the nectar-holding, I sustain the body as I wish, and then, in due time, I shall abandon it—this is my resolve.
Now, O King, before abandoning the body, I must not harm the lives of others; therefore, listen to my words.
There is a mountain named Himavat, pure as moonlight in its radiance, which lies at the heart of the northern region, touching both the eastern and western oceans.
There I dwell, fierce, in a house made of golden-peaked mountains, like an iron pillar, as the rakshasi named Karkaṭī.
By austerity I entreated Brahma, desiring to destroy people; thus, I became subtle as the life-taking disease viṣūcikā.
Therefore, having obtained the boon, for many years I afflicted people as viṣūcikā, tormenting their lives.
But Brahma set a restriction for me: 'You shall not harm the virtuous'; for that purpose, I am dependent on the great mantra and remain restrained by it.
So now, let this mantra be taken up; by it, all heart-pain in this world will be pacified—what more need be said about my causing confusion?
Indeed, I have ceased from violence; whatever hearts I harmed before, their channels have become impaired by that.
Those people whose blood and flesh I injured and abandoned—their impaired channels have produced others who are likewise afflicted.
O King, this viṣūcikā-mantra is now complete for you; for those possessing virtue, nothing here is insurmountable.
Therefore, for the relief of pain in those with impaired channels, O King, quickly take up the mantra spoken by the brāhmaṇas.
Come near to the river, O King; let us go there. With your calm and restrained selves, I, devoted to virtue, offer you this.
Thus, during that night, the demoness, her minister, and the king, having developed mutual friendship, went to the riverbank.
By both direct and indirect means, the two, knowing the demoness’s friendship, remained composed and at peace, dwelling there until the end.
Instructed by her in the knowledge of Brahman, they then, out of affection, received from her the mantra against cholera, which grants success when recited.
Then, the two, having formed a bond of friendship, dismissed the night-wandering demoness; when they were about to depart, the king spoke these words.
