निर्जीवं पतितं भूमौ संशुष्कम् इव पल्लवम् । काष्ठकुड्योपसंजातं शवं तुहिनशीतलम्
Lifeless, fallen upon the ground, dry like a withered leaf, the corpse, cold as snow, appeared beside the wooden wall.
ततो मन्त्रिभिर् आगत्य मृतैवेयम् इति स्वयम् । क्लेदलोकाद् विनिर्णीय भीत्या निष्कालितं गृहात्
Then, the ministers arrived and, declaring her dead, determined this by signs of decay, and, out of fear, removed her from the house.
बहुनात्र किम् उक्तेन नीत्वा चन्दनदारुभिः । चितौ प्रक्षिप्य सघृतं सहसा भस्मसात्कृतम्
What need is there for many words here? Having taken her, they placed her upon the funeral pyre with sandalwood and ghee, and she was swiftly reduced to ashes.
ततो राज्ञी मृते ऽत्युच्चैः कृत्वा रोदनम् आकुलः । परिवारस् तवाशेषः कृतवान् और्ध्वदेहिकम्
Afterwards, the queen's death caused loud and tumultuous lamentation; all your attendants performed the funeral rites.
इदानीं त्वाम् इहालोक्य सशरीराम् इहागताम् । परलोकाद् आगतेति महच् चित्रं भविष्यति
Now, seeing you here in bodily form, having come here, it will be considered a great marvel that you have returned from the other world.
त्वं तु तेनैव देहेन सत्यसङ्कल्पतस् सुते । दृश्यसे स्ववदातेन तेन चित्तं तवोपरि
But you, by the power of your true resolve, are seen here with that very body, your noble mind focused upon your son.
यद्वासना त्वम् अभवो देहं प्रति तद् एव ते । रूपम् अभ्युदितं बाले तेन प्राक्सदृशं तव
Whatever impression you held regarding the body, that very form has arisen in you, O child, just as it was before.
स्ववासनानुसारेण सर्वस् सर्वं हि पश्यति । दृष्टान्तो ऽत्राविसंवादी बालवेतालदर्शनम्
Everyone perceives everything according to their own impressions; the example here, without contradiction, is the vision of the child Vetala.
आतिवाहकदेहासि सम्पन्ना सिद्धसुन्दरी । विस्मृतस् तव देहो ऽसौ प्राक्तनो नयतस् स्वयम्
You have become endowed with the subtle body, O accomplished and beautiful one; your former body is forgotten and now departs on its own.
दृढातिवाहिकदृशः प्रशाम्यत्य् आधिभौतिकः । बुद्धस्य दृश्यमानो ऽपि शरन्मेघ इवाम्बरे
For one whose vision is firmly established in the subtle body, the physical affliction subsides, even if it appears to the awakened one, like a rain cloud in the sky.
रूढातिवाहिकीभावश् शवो भवति देहकः । निर्जलाम्भोदसदृशो निर्गन्धकुसुमोपमः
When the state of the subtle body is established, the physical body becomes like a corpse—like a waterless cloud, or a flower without fragrance.
अद्यारभ्य प्ररूढायाम् आतिवाहिकसंविदि । देहो विस्मृतिम् आयाति गर्भसंस्थेव यौवने
From today, as the awareness of the subtle body has matured, the body is forgotten, just as the state in the womb is forgotten in youth.
एकत्रिंशे ऽद्य दिवसे प्राप्ता वयम् इहाम्बरम् । प्रभाते मोहिते दास्यौ मयैते निद्रयाधुना
Today, on the thirty-first day, we have reached this sky; in the morning, these two maidservants were deluded by sleep.
तद् एहि यावल् लीलायै लीले सङ्कल्पलीलया । आत्मानं दर्शयावो ऽस्यै व्यवहारः प्रवर्तताम्
So come, Lila, let us reveal ourselves to her for the sake of play, by the play of thought, so that activity may proceed.
आवां तावद् इमे लीला पश्यत्व् इत्य् एव चिन्तिते । ज्ञप्त्या देव्यौ ततस् तत्र दृश्ये दीप्ते बभूवतुः
As soon as the thought arose, 'Let us appear before Lila,' the two goddesses became visible there, shining in that vision, by the power of awareness.
सा विदूरथलीलाथ समाकुलविलोचना । गृहम् आलोकयाम् आस तत् तेजःपुञ्जभासुरम्
Then Lila, wife of Viduratha, her eyes filled with wonder, gazed upon the house, radiant with that mass of light.
चन्द्रबिम्बाद् इवोत्कीर्णं धौतं हेमद्रवैर् इव । ज्वालाया इव शीतायास् सुमध्यम् इव भित्तिमत्
Like something carved from the moon's disk, washed with streams of gold, like a cool flame, or a slender vine with a solid support.
गृहम् आलोक्य पुरतो लीलाज्ञप्ती विलोक्यते । उत्थाय सम्भ्रमवती तयोः पादेषु सापतत्
Seeing the house before her, and perceiving the playful summons, she rose and, in haste, fell at their feet.
मज्जयायागते देव्यौ जयतं जीवितप्रदे । इह पूर्वम् अहं प्राप्ता भवत्योर् मार्गशोधिनी
When the queen Majjaya arrived, she said, 'Victory to you, givers of life! I have come here before you, as the one who clears your path.'
इत्य् उक्तवत्यां तस्यां ता मानिन्यो मत्तयौवनाः । उपाविशन् विष्टरेषु लता मेरुशिरस्स्व् इव
When she had spoken thus, those proud women, intoxicated by youth, sat down on the seats, like vines upon the summit of Mount Meru.
सुते वद कथं प्राप्ता त्वम् इमं देशम् आदितः । किं वृत्तं ते त्वया दृष्टं किम् इवाध्वनि कुत्र वा
'Child, tell us: how did you first arrive in this place? What happened to you, what did you see on the way, and where?'
देवि तस्मिन् प्रदेशे सा जातमूर्छा तदाभवम् । द्वितीयेन्दुकलेवाहं कल्पान्तज्वालयावृता
'Goddess, in that place I then fell into a swoon; I became like the waning crescent moon, enveloped by the flames of the end of an age.'
न चेतितं मया किञ्चित् समं विषमम् एव वा । ततस् तरलपक्ष्मान्ते विनिमील्य विलोचने
'I was not aware of anything, neither pleasant nor unpleasant; then, closing my eyes beneath trembling lashes...'
ततो मरणमूर्छान्ते पश्यामि परमेश्वरि । यावद् अभ्युत्थितास्म्य् आशु प्लुता च गगनोदरम्
'Then, at the end of that deathly swoon, O supreme goddess, I saw—until I suddenly arose and soared into the expanse of the sky.'
भूताकाशे ऽनिलरथं समारूढास्म्य् अहं तथा । आनीता गन्धलेखेव तेनाहम् इमम् आलयम्
In the space of elements, I have mounted the chariot of wind; just as a streak of fragrance is carried, so I have been brought to this abode.
इह पश्यामि सदनं नायकेनाभ्यलङ्कृतम् । दीप्तदीपं विविक्तं च महार्हशयनान्वितम्
Here I see a dwelling adorned by its master, shining with lamps, secluded, and furnished with a splendid bed.
पतिम् आलोकयामीमं यावद् एष विदूरथः । शेते कुसुमगुप्ताङ्गो मधुः पुष्पवने यथा
I behold my husband, Viduratha, lying with his body guarded by flowers, like honey in a garden of blossoms.
अथ सङ्ग्रामसंरम्भश्रमार्तो ऽयं स्वपित्य् अलम् । इति निद्रा मयास्यैवं देवेश्वरि न वारिता
Now, exhausted from the fervor of battle, he sleeps deeply; thus, O queen of gods, I did not prevent his slumber.
अनन्तरम् इमं देशं प्राप्ते देव्याव् इमे त्व् इति । यथानुभूतं कथितं मदनुग्रहकारिणि
Then, as the goddess arrived in this place, I recounted everything as experienced, O gracious one, for your favor.
हे हंसहारिगामिन्यौ लीले ललितलोचने । उत्थापयामो नृपतिं शवतल्पतलाद् इमम्
O you who move like swans, with playful and charming eyes, let us raise the king from this bed of corpses.
