देवि पश्य नृसिंहेन हतो भर्तायम् आवयोः । शक्तिकोटिनखैर् दैत्यस् सिन्धुर् उद्धुरकन्धरः
O goddess, see—our husband has been slain by Narasimha; the demon Sindhu, with his mighty neck, was torn by the lion's claws, sharp as a thousand spears.
सरस्तलस्थनागेन्द्रवरहूङ्कृतवारिवत् । दिष्ट्योरस्य् अस्य निर्याति रक्तं शुलुशुलारवैः
Like the mighty wind roaring over a lake where the king of serpents dwells, blood pours from his chest with a sound like sharp arrows.
हा कष्टं रथम् आनीतं सिन्धुर् आरोढुम् उद्यतः । सौवर्णं मैरवं शृङ्गं पुष्करावर्तको यथा
Alas, how terrible! The chariot has been brought for Sindhu to ascend; it is golden, like the crest of Mount Meru, swirling like a lotus whirlpool.
पश्य देवि रथो ऽस्यासौ मुद्गरेणावचूर्णितः । भ्रमत्पर्वतपातेन सौवर्णं नगरं यथा
See, goddess, his chariot has been shattered by the mace, like a golden city crushed by the fall of a whirling mountain.
प्रवृत्तो रथम् आनीतम् आरोढुं पतिर् एष मे । कष्टं वज्रम् इवेन्द्रेण मुसुलं सिन्धुनेरितम्
My husband, who set out and brought the chariot to mount, is struck down, as if by Indra's thunderbolt or the club hurled by the ocean.
वञ्चयित्वा विलासेन रथम् आरुह्य लाघवात् । पश्य भर्ता मदीयो ऽसौ चकास्ति नितरां रणे
Deceiving with his charm, he swiftly mounted the chariot—see, my husband shines forth exceedingly in battle.
हा धिक् कष्टम् असौ सिन्धुर् आर्यपुत्ररथं बलात् । हरिश् श्वभ्रम् इवरूढः प्लवेनोन्तर् इव द्रुमम्
Alas, how terrible! That Sindhu has forcefully seized the prince's chariot, like a monkey climbing a cliff or a branch in the air.
खड्गेनारोहतो ऽस्यांसच्छिन्नो भर्ता विलोकय । पद्मरागगिरिर् द्योतम् इव मुञ्चति शोणितम्
Look, my husband, as he climbs, is struck on the shoulder by a sword, and like a mountain of ruby, he pours forth blood in brilliance.
हा हा धिक् कष्टम् एतेन सिन्धुना खड्गधारया । जङ्घयोर् मे पतिश् छिन्नः क्रकचेनेव पादपः
Alas, alas, how dreadful! By this Sindhu wielding a sword, my husband's legs are cut, as a tree is severed by a saw.
हा हा हतास्मि दग्धास्मि मृतास्म्य् अपहतास्मि च । मृणाले इव लूने मे पत्युर् द्वे अपि जानुनी
Alas, alas, I am slain, I am burned, I am dead, I am destroyed; my husband's two knees are cut, like lotus stalks severed.
इत्य् उक्त्वा सा तदालोक्य भर्तृभावभयातुरा । लता परशुकृत्तेव मूर्छिता पतिता भुवि
Having spoken thus, seeing that, overwhelmed by fear for her husband's fate, she fell fainting to the ground, like a vine cut by an axe.
विदूरथो ऽपि निर्जानुः प्रहरन्न् एव विद्विषि । पपात स्यन्दने ऽप्य् आशु छिन्नमूल इव द्रुमः
And Viduratha, too, his knees severed, still striking at his enemy, quickly fell upon the chariot, like a tree with its roots cut.
पतन्न् एवैष सूतेन रथेनैवापवाहितः । यदा तदाहतिं तस्य कण्ठे ऽदात् सिन्धुर् उद्धतः

His body, thin and stained with blood from the wound in his neck cut by the sword, his garments smeared with red, the charioteer left him near the goddess, entered the house, and lay on the bed of death, having escaped his enemy.
हतो राजा हतो राजा प्रतिराजेन संयुगे । इति शब्दे समुद्भूते राष्ट्रम् आसीद् भयाकुलम्
The king is slain, the king is slain by the rival king in battle—when this cry arose, the kingdom was seized with fear.
भाण्डोपस्करभाराढ्यविद्रवत्सकलप्रजम् । साक्रन्दार्तकलत्राढ्यद्रवन्नागरं दुर्गमम्

ग्रामान्तरसमाक्रान्तविद्रवद्राजवल्लभम् । मण्डलान्तरसञ्जातनगरग्रामलुण्ठनम्
