ववुर् आवलितासारा मेघाडम्बरभेदिनः । कीर्णशीकरनीहारहारोदारास् समीरणाः
Winds blew, swirling with showers, breaking through the pomp of the clouds, noble in their coolness, adorned with garlands of scattered spray.
प्रस्फुरुस् त्रस्तसौवर्णसर्पापसरणोपमाः । विद्युतो दिवि दैत्यस्त्रीकटाक्षवलना इव
Lightning flashed, like the sudden movement of frightened golden serpents, or the glances of demon women cast upward into the sky.
जुघूर्णुर् गर्जनोच्छूनप्रतिश्रुद्घनकन्दराः । दिशश् चलितमातङ्गसिंहर्क्षवनघर्घराः
The mountains shook, echoing with thunder, like the roaring of herds of elephants, lions, and bears moving through the forests in all directions.
महामुसुलधाराभिः पेतुर् आसारवृष्टयः । कष्टटाङ्कारकठिनाः कृतान्तस्येव दृष्टयः
Torrential rains fell in great streams, harsh as the gaze of Death, with a crashing sound like the striking of hard iron.
उदभूत् प्रथमं बाष्प उष्णोष्णो ऽद्रिनिभो भुवः । पातालाद् अभ्रवृन्दानां युद्धायेवाभ्रविभ्रमाः
At first, a hot, mountain-like vapor arose from the earth; as if clouds from the netherworld were stirred up for battle, the clouds whirled in confusion.
ततो निमेषमात्रेण प्रशेमुर् मृगतृष्णिकाः । परबोधरसापूरैर् यथा संसारवासनाः
Then, in the blink of an eye, the mirages faded away, just as worldly desires vanish when filled with the nectar of supreme knowledge.
आसीत् पङ्काङ्कम् अखिलं भूमण्डलम् असञ्चरम् । पूरितः पूर्णधाराभिस् सिन्धुस् सिन्धुम् इवाम्बुना
The entire earth became covered in mud, unmoving; filled with streams pouring forth, like an ocean overflowing with water.
वायव्यम् अस्त्रम् असृजद् घूर्णिताकाशकोटरम् । कल्पान्तनृत्तसंपन्नरणद्भैरवभीषणम्
He released the wind weapon, which whirled through the sky's expanse; dreadful and terrifying, like the dance of destruction at the end of an age.
ववुर् अशनिनिपातपिण्डिताङ्गा दलितशिलाशकलाः ककुम्मुखेषु । प्रलयसमयसूचका भटानां कृतकटुटाङ्कृतटङ्किनस् समीराः
Winds blew, their bodies struck by falling thunderbolts, shattered fragments of rocks flying in the mountain caves; fierce gusts, marked by signs of doom, battered the warriors, making them grim and scarred.
ववुर् वलितनीहारा विकीर्णघनपल्लवाः । वायवो धूतवृक्षौघाः पतनोत्पाटनोद्भटाः
Winds blew, twisting the mist and scattering dense foliage; they shook masses of trees, violently uprooting and hurling them down.
विकुट्टिताटवीषण्डाश् श्वभ्रभित्तिविभेदिनः । तेनातिभीमवातेन विदूरथरथो ऽप्य् अथ
Forests were torn apart, cliffs split open; by that exceedingly fierce wind, even Viduratha's chariot was thrown about.
उह्यमानो ऽभवन् नद्या यथा जर्जरपल्लवः । विदूरथो ऽथ तत्याज पर्वतास्त्रं महास्त्रवित्
He was tossed about like a battered branch in a river; then Viduratha, the master of great weapons, abandoned the mountain weapon.
व्योमापि घनतां येन समाधातुम् इवोद्यतम् । तेन शैलास्त्रघातेन विरराम समीरणः
The wind, which seemed intent on making the sky dense, ceased due to the blow of mountain weapons.
शमं च तेन शान्तेन प्रययौ वायुना यतः । अन्तरिक्षगता वृक्षपङ्क्तयः पतिता भुवि
With that wind now calmed, tranquility prevailed, and the rows of trees suspended in the air fell to the earth.
नानाजनाशनव्यूहे काकानाम् इव कोटयः । शेमुश् शीत्कारडक्कारभाक्कारोक्कारका दिशाम्
In the array of various people-devouring formations, countless crows gathered, uttering cries, shrieks, and howls in all directions.
प्रलापा इव विध्वस्तप्रथाः पवनवीरुधाम् । गिरीन् अपश्यन् नभसः पततः पर्णपत्त्रवत्
The uproar of the wind-torn trees sounded like incoherent babbling, and they saw mountains falling from the sky like leaves from branches.
सिन्धुस् सिन्धुर् इवोत्पन्नान् मैनाकादीन् इतस् ततः । वज्रास्त्रम् असृजद् दीप्तं तेरुर् वज्रघनास् ततः
Rivers, like the ocean, arose here and there, along with Mainaka and other mountains; then they unleashed a blazing thunderbolt weapon, and thunderclouds roared.
पिबन्तो ऽद्रीन् प्रतिगिरं वह्निदाहाद् इवाग्नयः । ते गिरीणां पुरीणां च कोटितुण्डावखण्डनैः
Like fires consuming mountains with their flames, they shattered the peaks and cities of the mountains with countless blows.
शिरांसि शातयाम् आसुः फलानीवोल्बनानिलाः । विदूरथो ऽथ वज्रास्त्रशान्त्यै ब्रह्मास्त्रम् अभ्यदात्
They split the summits as fierce winds scatter fruits; then Viduratha, to pacify the thunderbolt weapon, invoked the Brahma weapon.
ततो ब्रह्मास्त्रवज्रास्त्रे समं प्रशमम् आगते । श्यामाश्यामं पिशाचास्त्रम् अथ सिन्धुर् अचोदयत्
When both the Brahma weapon and the thunderbolt weapon were subdued together, Sindhu then activated the dark, ghastly demon weapon.
तेनोदगुः पिशाचानां पङ्क्तयो ऽनन्तभीतिदाः । सन्ध्यायाम् इव भीत्येव दिवसश् श्यामतां ययौ
By that, lines of ghosts arose, giving endless fear; as in twilight, fear itself, the day turned dark.
पिशाचा भुवनं जह्रुर् अन्धकारभरा इव । भास्मनस्तम्भसदृशास् तालोत्तालविलासिनः
The ghosts seized the world, as if filled with darkness; resembling pillars of ash, they moved with wild gestures.
दृश्यमानमहाकारा मुष्टिग्राह्या नकिञ्चन । ऊर्ध्वकेशाः कृशाङ्गाश् च केचिच् च श्मश्रुला अपि
Visible in great forms, graspable by the fist yet nothing at all; some with hair standing up, thin bodies, and some even with beards.
कृशाङ्गा मलिनाङ्गाश् च ग्राम्या इव नभश्चराः । सभायां मूढदृष्टाश् च यत्किञ्चनकराः खलाः
Thin-bodied, dirty-bodied, like villagers wandering the sky; in the assembly, dull-eyed, doing whatever, wicked.
दीना बह्वाशिनः क्रूरा दीना ग्राम्यजना इव । तरुकर्दमरथ्यान्तश्शून्यगेहगृहाश् चलाः
Wretched, gluttonous, cruel, wretched like rural folk; unstable, with empty homes, at the ends of muddy streets and under trees.
लेलिहानाः प्रेतरूपाः कृष्णाङ्गाश् श्वपचा इव । जगृहुस् ते तदा मत्ता हतशिष्टम् अरेर् बलम्
Licking, in forms of the dead, black-bodied like dog-eaters; they seized, intoxicated, the remnants of the enemy's force.
आसन्नसैनिकास् तत्र वित्रस्तक्षुब्धचेतनाः । त्यक्तायुधतनुत्राणास् त्रस्तप्राणास् स्खलद्गमाः
The soldiers nearby, with minds disturbed and terrified; abandoning weapons and armor, frightened for their lives, stumbling as they fled.
नेत्रैर् अङ्गैर् मुखैः पादैर् विकारभयकारिणः । त्यक्तकौपीनवसना निर्नग्ना हसनोत्तराः
With eyes, limbs, faces, and feet causing terror through their distortions; abandoning loincloths and garments, naked, laughing in response.
विष्ठां मूत्रं च कुर्वन्तस् स्थिरम् आरब्धनर्तनाः । पिशाचराजो राजानम् अथ यावद्विदूरथम्
Defecating and urinating, with their wild dancing begun, the king of the goblins approached the king, who was not far off.
समाक्रामति तावत् स मायां तां बुबुधे बुधः । पिशाचसङ्ग्रामकरीं मायां वेत्ति स भूमिपः
As he advanced, the wise king recognized that illusion, knowing it to be a magical display conjured for battle by the goblin king.
