आसनद्वयविश्रान्तं स ददर्शाप्सरोद्वयम् । मेरुशृङ्गद्वये लीनं चन्द्रद्वयम् इवोदितम्
He saw two apsaras resting on two seats, like two moons risen and merged upon the twin peaks of Meru.
निमेषम् इव सञ्चिन्त्य स विस्मितमना नृपः । उत्तस्थौ शयनाच् छेषाद् इव चक्रगदाधरः
Thinking for a moment, the king, astonished in mind, rose from his bed, like the wielder of the discus and mace rising from sleep.
परिसम्यमितालम्बमाल्यहारवराम्बरः । पुष्पोत्कर इवोत्फुल्लं जग्राह कुसुमाञ्जलिम्
With his garland, necklace, and splendid garments properly arranged, he took a handful of flowers, blooming like a cluster freshly opened.
उपधानप्रदेशस्थात् स्वयं पटलकोदरात् । बद्धपद्मासनो भूमौ भूत्वोवाचेदम् आनतः
Seated in the lotus posture on the ground, near the place of the cushion, having himself drawn the cloth from his waist, he bowed and spoke thus.
जयतां जन्मदौस्स्थित्यदाहदोषशशिप्रभे । देव्यौ बाह्यान्तरतमोविद्रावणरविप्रभे
Victory to you, O goddesses, radiant as the moon, dispelling the faults of birth, instability, and burning pain; shining forth with the roar that drives away inner and outer darkness.
तयोर् उक्त्वेति तत्याज पादयोः कुसुमाञ्जलिम् । तीरद्रुमो विकसितं पद्मिन्योः पद्मयोर् इव
Having spoken thus to them, he placed the handful of flowers at their feet, like a blossoming tree at the banks offering lotuses to the twin lotuses.
लीलायै भूपजन्माथ वक्तुं मन्त्रिणम् ईश्वरी । बोधयाम् आस पार्श्वस्थं सङ्कल्पेन सरस्वती
Then, for the sake of telling the story of the king's birth to Lila, the goddess Sarasvati, by her will, awakened the minister standing nearby.
प्रबुद्धो ऽप्सरसौ दृष्ट्वा प्रणम्य कुसुमाञ्जलिम् । तयोः पादेषु सन्त्यज्य विवेश पुरतो नतः
Awakened, he saw the two apsaras, offered a handful of flowers in reverence, and, leaving them at their feet, entered and stood before them, bowing.
उवाच देवी हे राजन् कस् त्वम् कस्य सुतः कदा । इह जात इति श्रुत्वा स मन्त्री वाक्यम् अब्रवीत्
The goddess spoke: O king, who are you, whose son are you, and when were you born here? Hearing this, the minister replied.
देव्यौ युष्मत्प्रसादो ऽयं भवत्योर् अपि यत् पुरः । वक्तुं शक्नोमि तद् इदं श्रूयतां जन्म मत्प्रभोः
O goddesses, by your grace I am able to speak openly before you; so listen as I recount the birth of my lord.
आसीद् इक्ष्वाकुवंशोत्थो राजा राजीवलोचनः । श्रीमत्कुन्दरथो नाम दोश्छायाच्छादितावनिः
There was a king descended from the Ikshvaku lineage, whose eyes resembled lotuses, named Kundaratha, whose realm was veiled by the shadow of faults.
तस्याभूद् इन्दुवदनः पुत्रो भद्ररथाभिधः । तस्य विश्वरथः पुत्रस् तस्य पुत्रो बृहद्रथः
He had a son with a face like the moon, named Bhadraratha; Bhadraratha's son was Vishvaratha, and Vishvaratha's son was Brihadratha.
तस्य सिन्धुरथः पुत्रस् तस्य शैलरथस् सुतः । तस्य कामरथः पुत्रस् तस्य पुत्रो महारथः
Brihadratha's son was Sindhuratha; Sindhuratha's son was Shailaratha; Shailaratha's son was Kamaratha; Kamaratha's son was Maharatha.
तस्य विष्णुरथः पुत्रस् तस्य पुत्रः कलारथः । तस्य सूर्यरथः पुत्रस् तस्य पुत्रो नभोरथः
Maharatha's son was Vishnuratha; Vishnuratha's son was Kalaratha; Kalaratha's son was Suryaratha; Suryaratha's son was Nabhoratha.
अयम् अस्मत्प्रभुस् तस्य पुत्रः पूर्णामलद्युतेः । अमृतापूरितरथः क्षीरोदस्येव चन्द्रमाः
This lord of mine is the son of Nabhoratha, radiant with complete purity, his chariot filled with nectar, like the moon in the ocean of milk.
महद्भिः पुण्यसम्भारैर् विदूरथ इति श्रुतः । जातो मातुस् सुमित्राया गौर्या गुह इवापरः
He is known as Viduratha, born from the accumulation of great merit, from his mother Sumitra, who is fair like Gauri, just as Guha was born from another.
पितास्य दशवर्षस्य दत्त्वा राज्यं वनं गतः । पालयत्य् एष भूपीठं ततःप्रभृति धर्मतः
His father, when he was ten years old, gave him the kingdom and went to the forest; from that time, he has ruled the royal throne righteously.
भवन्त्याव् अद्य सम्प्राप्ते फलिते सुकृतद्रुमे । देव्यौ दीर्घतपःक्लेशशतदुष्प्रापदर्शने
Today, when the tree of good deeds has borne fruit, you two queens—who were long tormented by the hardships of severe austerities—have become visible.
इत्य् अयं वसुधाधीशो विदूरथ इति श्रुतः । अद्य युष्मत्प्रसादेन परां पावनतां गतः
Thus, this lord of the earth is known as Viduratha; today, by your grace, he has attained supreme purity.
इत्य् उक्त्वा संस्थिते तूष्णीं मन्त्रिण्य् अवनिपे तथा । कृताञ्जलौ नतमुखे बद्धपद्मासने ऽवनौ
Having spoken thus, the king and the minister sat silently, with joined palms, bowed heads, and seated in the lotus posture upon the ground.
राजन् स्मर विवेकेन पूर्वजातिम् इमां स्वयम् । वदन्ती मूर्ध्नि पस्पर्श तं करेण सरस्वती
O King, recall with discernment your previous birth yourself—so said Sarasvati, touching his head with her hand.
अथ हार्दतमोमाया पद्मस्य क्षयम् आययौ । सविकासं च हृदयं ज्ञप्तिस्पर्शाद् अथाभवत्
Then, the darkness of ignorance in his heart faded away, and, from the touch of knowledge, his heart blossomed fully.
सस्मार पूर्ववृत्तान्तम् अन्तस्स्फुरद् इव स्थितम् । अन्यदेहैकराजत्वं लीलाविलसितान्वितम्
He remembered the events of his past, as if they were stirring within; his sole sovereignty in another body, accompanied by playful acts.
ज्ञात्वा प्रज्ञप्तिवृत्तान्तं लीलायत्नविजृम्भितम् । आत्मोदन्तं बभूवासाव् उह्यमान इवार्णवे
Having known the account of his previous existence, unfolded through the play of knowledge and effort, he became as if carried away in the ocean of his own story.
उवाचात्मनि संसारे बत मायेयम् आतता । परिज्ञाता प्रसादेन देव्योर् इह मयाधुना
He said: Alas, this world of transmigration is indeed spread out by illusion; by the grace of the goddesses, I have now recognized it here.
हे देव्यौ किम् इदं नाम दिनम् एकं मृतस्य मे । गतम् अद्येह यातानि वयो वर्षाणि सप्ततिः
O goddesses, what is this? Has only a single day passed since my death? Yet today, seventy years of my life have gone by here.
स्मराम्य् अनेककार्याणि स्मरामि प्रपितामहम् । स्मरामि बाल्यं तारुण्यं मित्रबन्धुपरिच्छदम्
I remember many activities, I remember my great-grandfather, I remember my childhood, youth, and the company of friends and relatives.
राजन् मृतिमहामोहमूर्छायास् समनन्तरम् । तस्मिंल् लोकान्तरे ऽतीते तस्मिन्न् एव मुहूर्तके
O King, immediately after the great delusion and fainting of death, in that other world that passed, all of it occurred in that very instant.
तस्मिन्न् एव गृहे ऽथास्मिन् नैव वेत्स्य् अथ वच्मि ते । अयं तस्य गृहस्यान्तर् व्योमन्य् एव किल स्थितः
In that very house, or in this one—whether you know it or not, I will tell you—the interior space of that house is said to be situated right here.
गिरिग्रामकविप्रस्य गृहे ऽन्तर् भूपमण्डपः । तस्यान्तर् इदम् आभाति प्रत्येकं च जगद्गृहम्
Within the house of a brahmin in a mountain village, there is the king's hall; within it, this appears, and within each, the house of the world.
