क्षुरिकाभिस् सक्षुरिका भिण्डिपालैश् च तद्भृतः । वज्रमुष्टिधरास् तत्स्थैर् अङ्कुशैर् अङ्कुशोद्धृताः
Some bore daggers, being dagger-wielders, and others held slings, being sling-bearers; some stood with thunderbolt-fists, and others brandished goads, being goad-wielders.
हलैर् हलनिकाषज्ञास् त्रिशूलैश् च त्रिशूलिनः । शृङ्खलाजालिनो जालैश् शार्ङ्खलैर् अलिकोमलैः
Some held ploughs, being skilled in ploughing, and others tridents, being trident-bearers; some were adorned with chains and nets, and others with garlands of gentle creepers.
शाक्तीकैश् शक्तियोद्धारश् शूलैश् शूलविशारदाः । क्षुभिताः कल्पविक्षुब्धसागरोर्मिघटा इव
Some fought with spears, being skilled in spear-combat, and others with lances, being adept with lances; they were agitated like waves of the ocean stirred by the end of an age.
क्षुब्धश् चक्रजलावर्तैश् शरशीकरमारुतैः । प्रभ्रमद्धेतिमकरो व्योमैकार्णव आबभौ
Disturbed by the whirling eddies of discus-weapons and the wind of arrow-showers, the sky appeared like a single ocean, with crocodiles of spinning missiles.
उत्फालायुधकल्लोलस् सेनाकुलजलेचरः । रोधोरन्ध्रसमुद्रो ऽसौ बभूवामरदुस्तरः
With surging waves of weapons and the waters crowded with armies, that battlefield became like a river-ocean, difficult even for immortals to cross.
दिगष्टकजनानीकं पक्षद्वयतया तया । अर्धेनार्धेन कुषितं भूपालाभ्यां तथा स्थितम्
That host of kings, stationed on both sides like the two wings of an army, stood thus, each occupying half the field, facing each other.
पश्य देशादिसङ्ख्येन प्राग्दिग्भागगतान् इमान् । लीलानाथस्य पद्मस्य पक्षे जनपदाञ् शृणु
See, according to the number of regions and directions, those peoples who dwell in the eastern quarter; now hear of the lands on the side of the lotus of Lila's Lord.
पूर्वस्यां काशिमगधाः कोसला मिथिलोत्कलाः । मेकलाः कवटाः पुण्ड्रास् तथौण्ड्रास् समगौडकाः
In the east are the Kāśis, Magadhas, Kosalas, Mithilas, Utkalas, Mekalas, Kavaṭas, Puṇḍras, as well as the Auṇḍras and the united Gauḍakas.
द्रिमयो मद्रसुह्माश् च ताम्रलिप्तास् तथैव च । प्राग्ज्योतिषा वाजिमुखा अम्बष्ठाः पुरुषादकाः
There are the Drimayas, Madras, Suhmas, and likewise the Tāmraliptas; also the Prāgjyotiṣas, Vājimukhas, Ambaṣṭhas, and Puruṣādas.
कर्णाक्षष्ठा अविश्रोत्रा आममीनाशनास् तथा । व्याघ्रवक्त्राः किराताश् च शवरा एकपादकाः
There are the Karṇākṣas, Aviśrotras, those who eat raw fish, the Vyāghravaktras, Kirātas, Śavaras, and the Ekapādas.
माल्यवान् नाम शैलो ऽत्र शिबिवाञ् ज्ञान एव च । वृषभध्वजपद्माद्यास् तथोदयकरो गिरिः
Here stands the mountain named Mālyavān, and also Śibivān, as well as Jñāna; the mountains Vṛṣabhadhvaja, Padma, and others, and the mountain called Udaya.
अथ प्राग्दक्षिणायां तु इमे विन्ध्याद्रिवासिनः । चेदयो वत्सदाशार्णा अङ्गवङ्गोपवङ्गकाः
Now, in the southeast, these are the dwellers on Mount Vindhya: the Cedayas, Vatsas, Dāśārṇas, Aṅgas, Vaṅgas, and the subordinate Vaṅgas.
कलिङ्गपुण्ड्रजठरा विदर्भा मेखलास् तथा । शवरा नग्नपर्णाश् च कण्ठत्रिपुरपूरकाः
The Kaliṅgas, Puṇḍras, Jaṭharas, Vidarbhas, and Mekalas are there; also the Śavaras, Nagnaparṇas, and the Kaṇṭhatripurapūrikas.
कण्टकस्थलनामानः पृथुद्वीपककोमलाः । कण्ठद्राश् शोणिकाश् चैव तथा चर्मण्वता अपि
There are those called Kaṇṭakasthalas, the gentle ones of Pṛthudvīpaka, the Kaṇṭhadrās, the Śoṇikas, and also those of Carmaṇvat.
कोकका हेमकुड्याश् च तथा श्मश्रुधरा इति । बलिग्रीवमहाग्रीवाः किष्किन्धा नारिकेलिनः
Kokakas, Hemakudyas, and likewise the Shmashrudharas; Baligrivas, Mahagrivas, Kishkindhas, and Nārikelinas.
अथ लीलापतेर् अस्य दक्षिणस्याम् इमे ऽद्रयः । विन्ध्यो ऽथ कुसुमापीडो महेन्द्रो दुन्दुरस् तथा
Now, on the southern side of this play of the Lord, are these mountains: Vindhya, Kusumapida, Mahendra, and Dundura as well.
मलयस् सूर्यवांश् चैव गणराज्यनृराज्यकाः । अवन्तिर् इति विख्याता तथा साम्बवतीति च
Malaya and Suryavansh, and those called Ganarajya and Nrirajyaka; also those renowned as Avanti and Sambavati.
दशपुर्या एककच्छा ऋषिकास् तुरुष्काश् शकाः । वनवासोपगिरयस् ते भद्रगिरयस् तथा
Dashapurya, Ekakaccha, Rishikas, Turushkas, Shakas; those of Vanavasa, the mountain-dwellers, and likewise the Bhadragiri people.
नागरा दण्डकाश् चैव गणराज्या नृराज्यकाः । सहारा ऋष्यमूकाश् च कार्कोटा वनतिम्बिलाः
Nagaras and Dandakas, as well as Ganarajya and Nrirajyaka; Saharas, Rishyamukas, Karkotas, and the Vanatimbilas.
पद्मा निवासिनश् चैव चौरकाः कर्कवीरकाः । वैरिकाः पाशिकाश् चैव धर्मपत्तनपांसिकाः
Padmas, the residents, and also the Chaurakas, Karkaviras; Vairikas, Pashikas, and the people of Dharmapattana and Pamsikas.
शाकिकाः कृष्णचेलूरा नार्मदास् ताम्रपर्णकाः । गोनन्दाः कनकाश् चैव चीनपत्तननामकाः
Shakikas, Krishnacheluras, Narmadas, Tamraparnakas; Gonandas, Kanakas, and those called the people of China-pattana.
तालीकटास् सरित्कीर्णा रहका वेण्णकार्हणाः । वैवुण्डकास् तुम्बवना लाजिनद्वीपकर्णकाः
Talikatakas, those living along the rivers, Rahakas, Vennakarhanas; Vaivundakas, Tumbavanas, Lajinadvipa, and Karnakas.
कर्णिकाराश् च शिवयः कुङ्कुणाश् चित्रकूटकाः । कर्णाटमञ्चकटका महाकटविकास् तथा
There are the Karṇikāras, the Śivayas, the Kuṅkuṇas, the Citrakūṭakas, the Karṇāṭas, the Mañcakaṭakas, and likewise the Mahākaṭavikas.
आन्ध्राश् च कोल्लशिनयश् शिवातकचवैरिकाः । बलदेवाः पत्तनकाः क्रौञ्चाष् टीवास् तथैव च
There are also the Āndhras, the Kollas, the Śinayas, the Śivātakas, the Cavairikās, the Baladevas, the Pattanakas, the Krauñcas, and the Ṭīvās as well.
शिलाक्षा रदतो नन्दनन्दनामलयाभिधाः । ते चित्रकूटशिखरा लङ्कारक्षोगणास्पदाः
There are the Śilākṣās, the Radatas, the Nandanandas, and those called Amalayas; these are the inhabitants of the peaks of Citrakūṭa, the abodes of the hosts of Laṅkā’s guardians.
अथ प्रत्यग्दक्षिणायां महाराष्ट्रसुराष्ट्रकाः । सिन्धुसौवीरशूद्राख्या आभीरा द्रमिडास् तथा
Now, in the southwestern direction, are the Mahārāṣṭras, the Surāṣṭras, those known as Sindhus, Sauvīras, Śūdras, Ābhīras, and also the Dramiḍas.
कोटकाष् षण्डसिन्ध्वाख्यास् तथा कलिरुहा अपि । अत्र हेमगिरिश् शैलस् तथा रैवतको गिरिः
There are the Koṭakas, those called Ṣaṇḍas and Sindhus, as well as the Kaliruhas; here are the mountains Hemagiri and likewise Raivataka.
नभुकाख्यं मयवनं यवनास् तत्र जन्तवः । पह्लवा मार्गणावर्ता धूम्राम्बष्ठकनामकाः
There is the region called Mayavana, known as Nabhuka, where dwell the Yavanas; the Pahlavas, the Mārgaṇāvartas, and those named Dhūmrāmbaṣṭhakas.
तथा लाजकणाश् चैव तथाम्रगिरिवासिनः । ततो ऽब्धिर् और्वाग्नियुता एते लीलापतेर् जनाः
Likewise, there are the Lājakaṇas and those dwelling on Amragiri; beyond that is the ocean, with the fires of Aurva—these are the people of the Lord of Play.
अथ तत्प्रतिपक्षस्थान् इमाञ् जनपदाञ् शृणु । पश्चिमायां दिशि प्रौढा इमे तावन् महाद्रयः
Now, hear of the peoples dwelling in the regions opposite to these; in the western direction, these great mountains are prominent.
