गृह एव यथा स्वप्ने नगरं भाति भास्वरम् । तथैतद् असद् एवान्तश् चिद्धातौ भाति भास्वरम्
Just as, in a dream, a radiant city appears while one is at home, so too, within the essence of consciousness, this unreal world shines brightly.
यथा मरुजले ऽम्बुत्वं कटकत्वं च हेमनि । असत् सद् इव भातीदं तथा दृश्यत्वम् आत्मनि
As water appears in a mirage, and gold seems to have the form of a bracelet, so too, this unreal world appears real, and visibility arises within the self.
एवम् आकलयन्त्यौ ते ललने ललनाकृती । गृहान् निर्ययतुर् बाह्यं चारुचङ्क्रमणक्रमैः
Thus, as the two maidens reflected, they, graceful in form, departed from their house and stepped outside with charming, measured steps.
अदृश्ये ग्रामलोकेन प्रेक्षमाणे पुरो गिरिम् । चुम्बिताकाशकुहरं संस्प्र्ष्टादित्यमण्डलम्
With the people of the village unseen, they gazed ahead at the mountain, its caves kissed by the sky and its peaks touched by the sun's orb.
नानावर्णाखिलोत्फुल्लविचित्रवनकम्बलम् । नानानिर्झरनिर्धूतकूजद्वनविहङ्गमम्
It was covered with a wondrous blanket of forests, all blooming in various colors, and alive with birds singing, stirred by many waterfalls.
विचित्रमञ्जरीपुञ्जपिञ्जराम्बुदमण्डलम् । अभ्रकच्छगुलुच्छाग्रविश्रान्तखगसारवम्
There were clusters of marvelous blossoms, clouds tinged with saffron, and flocks of birds resting on the tips of mica rocks.
सारवञ्जुलविस्तारगुप्ताखिलसरित्तटम् । असमाप्तशिलाश्वभ्रलतानर्तनमारुतम्
The banks of all the rivers were hidden by the wide-spreading sāravañjula trees, and the wind played among unfinished rocks, ravines, and dancing creepers.
पुष्पाभ्रपिहिताकाशकोशकुट्टकवारिदम् । पतद्दीर्घसरित्स्रोतस्सितमुक्ताकलापकम्
Clouds, like masses of flowers, veiled the sky, and rainwater collected in hollows, while long rivers carried clusters of shining pearls.
चलद्वृक्षवनव्यूहवातघट्टितदिक्तटम् । नानावनाकुलोपान्तच्छायासततशीतलम्
The wind shook the ranks of moving trees and forests, stirring the edges of the directions, and the shade from the dense woods at the forest's edge brought constant coolness.
अथ ते ललने तत्र तदा ददृशतुस् स्वयम् । तं गिरिग्रामकं व्योम्नस् स्वर्गखण्डम् इव च्युतम्
Then, those two maidens saw for themselves that mountain village, as if a fragment of heaven had fallen from the sky.
वहत्प्रणालीपटलं पूर्णपुष्करिणीजलम् । द्विजैः कुरुकुचैः कूजत् सुषिरश्वभ्रकच्छलम्
Channels and streams carry the full water of lotus ponds, where birds with curved beaks sing, and the hollows and caves echo with their calls.
गर्जद्गोवृन्दहुङ्कारकरालाखिलकुञ्जकम् । गुञ्जागुल्मकषण्डाढ्यं सच्छायघनमारुतम्
The groves resound with the deep lowing of herds of cows, fierce and thunderous, filled with the humming of bees and dense thickets, and cooled by the shade and thick winds.
दुष्प्रवेशार्ककिरणं पृथङ् नीहारधूसरम् । उदञ्चन्मञ्जरीपुञ्जजटालविशिखान्तरम्
Sunbeams scarcely enter, blocked by mist and dust, and the spaces between the dense clusters of blossoming flowers are shrouded in shade.
शिलाफलहकस्फारप्रोच्छलच्छुक्लनिर्झरैः । स्मारिताचलनिर्धूतक्षीरोदधिजलश्रियम्
Broad, white waterfalls pour over rocks and boulders, recalling the splendor of the ocean of milk churned and cast aside by the mountains.
फलमालामहाभारभासुरैर् अजिरद्रुमैः । आनीय पुष्पसम्भारं तिष्ठद्भिर् इव सङ्कुलम्
The courtyards are crowded with great fruit-laden trees, shining under the weight of their heavy clusters, as if gathering a wealth of flowers.
तरत्तरलझाङ्कारकारिमारुतकम्पितैः । कीर्णपुष्पमहावृष्टिं द्रुमैर् इव रसाकुलैः
The trees, shaken by swift, trembling winds that produce a jingling sound, seem overflowing with sap, scattering a great rain of flowers.
अशङ्कितशिलाकूटस्रवदब्बिन्दुझाङ्कृतैः । किञ्चित्कृतरवं गुप्तैर् अशङ्कैश् शङ्कितैः खगैः
Birds, some hidden and some cautious, make soft sounds, startled by the sudden drip of water from rocky peaks, yet unafraid.
उत्फाललहरीप्रान्तशीकरास्वादनाकुलैः । नद्याम् उड्डयनावर्तवृत्तिभिर् विहगैर् वृतम्
The river is filled with birds whose movements follow the swirling eddies, eager to taste the spray at the edge of leaping waves.
उत्तालतालविश्रान्तकाकालोकनशङ्कितैः । बालैः प्रगोपितामिक्षाखण्डं जीर्णस्वभूप्तकैः
With children, startled by the sight of crows resting on tall palm trees, scattering pieces of sugarcane chewed and discarded by the aged village folk.
पुष्पशेखरसम्भारवसनग्रामबालकम् । कदम्बनिम्बजम्बीरगहनोपान्तशीतलम्
With village boys adorned with garlands of flowers, their garments a collection of blossoms, cooled in the shade at the edge of dense groves of kadamba, neem, and jujube trees.
क्षौमानुतस्तास्वरया मञ्जरीपूर्णकर्णया । क्षुत्क्षान्तया भ्रान्तरथ्यं ग्रामखेटककान्तया
With village beauties, their ears filled with the sound of bees, wearing linen garments, wandering the village lanes, weakened by hunger.
सरित्तरङ्गसङ्घट्टसंरावाश्रुतसङ्कथम् । कर्णजाड्यघनत्रासवाञ्छितैकान्तसंस्थितिम्
Desiring solitude, their ears dulled and troubled by the loud conversations and the crashing sounds of river waves.
दधिलिप्तास्यहस्तांसैर् बद्धपुष्पलताधरैः । नग्नैर् गोमयपङ्काङ्कैर् बालैर् आकुलचत्वरम्
With children, their faces and hands smeared with curd, lips adorned with garlands of flowers, naked, marked with cow-dung and mud, filling the courtyards with commotion.
तीरशाद्वलवल्लीनां दोलान्दोलनहारिभिः । तरङ्गैर् वाह्यमानाम्बुलेखिकाङ्कितसैकतम्
With sandbanks marked by lines drawn with water, as the waves, swinging the creepers on the green riverbanks, carry them away.
दधिक्षीरघनामोदमत्तमन्थरमक्षिकम् । काल्यभक्तार्थनोद्बाष्पजर्जराम्बरबालकम्
With bees, sluggish and intoxicated by the rich fragrance of curd and milk, and with village boys, their garments soaked with tears as they beg for their morning meal.
गोमयासिक्तवलयकरवारीकृतक्रुधम् । धम्मिल्लवलनाव्यग्रभूतस्त्रीविहसज्जनम्
With women laughing, their hair disheveled and distracted by play, and with children, angry from being splashed with cow-dung water, their hands forming circles.
दान्तपुच्छच्छटच्छन्नपतत्ककुदवायसम् । गृहरथ्याङ्गनद्वारकीर्णकुन्दकरण्डकम्
With its courtyards scattered with the feathers of peacocks, the wings of crows, and the tails of cows, and with the entrances of houses, streets, and courtyards strewn with baskets of jasmine flowers.
गृहपार्श्वस्थितश्वभ्रजातैः कुसुमितद्रुमैः । प्रत्यहं प्रातर् आगुल्फम् आकीर्णकुसुमाजिरम्
Beside the houses stand trees in full bloom, their flowers falling every morning to cover the ground up to the ankles with a carpet of blossoms.
सरच्चामरसारङ्गचलजङ्गलषण्डकम् । गुञ्जानिकुञ्जसञ्जातशष्पसुप्तमृगार्भकम्
With groves of water lilies and antelopes, and clusters of wild grass where young deer sleep, and thickets where bees hum among the guñjā creepers.
एकान्तरास्तवत्सैककर्णस्पन्दास्तमक्षिकम् । गोपोच्छिष्टीकृतदधिसम्पर्कास्पन्दमक्षिकम्
Here and there, calves twitch their single ears, and bees, having tasted the remains of curds left by cowherds, move about with a gentle hum.
