कल्लोलाकुलकच्छासु लसद्गुलुगुलासु च । वेलावनगुहास्व् अब्धेश् चिरं कूर्मतया स्थितम्
Long did I remain, like a tortoise, in the caves of the ocean’s shore, amidst the waves and the echoing, resonant groves.
नलिनीनालदोलासु दोलनं सरसानिलम् । चलत्पत्त्रसजालासु राजहंसतया कृतम्
I played as a royal swan, swinging on the stalks of lotuses, in the gentle breeze of the lake, among the moving clusters of leaves.
शाद्वलीदलदोलानाम् आन्दोलनविनिद्रताम् । मषकस्य मयालोक्य दीनं मषिकया स्थितम्
Observing the gentle swaying of grass-blade cradles, I saw a weary mosquito lying helplessly with its mate.
तरत्तारतरङ्गासु चञ्चद्वीच्यग्रचुम्बनैः । भ्रान्तं शैलस्रवन्तीषु जलवञ्जुलबालया
On the trembling, wave-tossed waters, kissed by the tips of dancing ripples, I wandered with the young water-vine among the mountain streams.
गन्धमादनमन्दारमन्दिरे मदनातुरः । पतितः पादयोः पूर्वं विद्याधरकुमारकः
Overcome by passion in the fragrant halls of Gandhamadana and Mandara, the young Vidyadhara fell at her feet.
कीर्णकर्पूरपूतेषु तल्पेषु व्यसनातुरा । चिरं विलुलितास्मीन्दोर् बिम्बेष्व् इव शशिप्रभा
Tormented by longing, I lay for a long time on beds sprinkled with camphor, tossed about like moonlight on the orbs of mirrors.
योनिष्व् अनेकविधदुःखशतान्वितासु भ्रान्तं मयोन्नमनसन्नमनाकुलाङ्ग्या । संसारदीर्घसरितश् चलया लहर्या दुर्वारवातहरिणीसरणक्रमेण
With a mind bewildered, rising and falling, and limbs disturbed by the countless forms of suffering in various wombs, I was carried away by the swift current of the long river of worldly existence, driven irresistibly by the wind of fate.
वज्राङ्गसाराद् ब्रह्माण्डकुड्यान् निबिडमण्डलात् । कोटियोजनसंविष्टात् कथं ते निर्गते उभे
From the solid core of adamantine strength, from the dense wall of the cosmic egg, extending over millions of yojanas, how did both of you emerge?
क्व ब्रह्माण्डं क्व तद्भित्तिः क्वात्रासौ वज्रसारता । किलावश्यं स्थिते देव्याव् अन्तःपुरवराम्बरे
Where is the cosmic egg, where its wall, and where is that adamantine solidity? Surely, O goddess, you both remain within the inner sky of the royal palace.
तस्मिन्न् एव गिरिग्रामे तस्मिन्न् एवालयाम्बरे । ब्राह्मणस् स वसिष्ठाख्य आस्वादयति राजताम्
In that very mountain village, in that very house, the brahmin named Vasiṣṭha enjoys his sovereignty.
तम् एव मण्डपाकाशकोणकं शून्यमात्रकम् । चतुस्समुद्रपर्यन्तं भूतलं सो ऽनुभूतवान्
That very pavilion, that empty space, he experienced as the earth surrounded by the four oceans.
आकाशात्मनि भूपीठे तस्मिंस् तद् राजपत्तनम् । राजसद्मानुभवति स च सा चाप्य् अरुन्धती
On that seat of earth, which is the very essence of space, he and Arundhatī experienced the royal city and the royal palace.
लीलाभिधाना सञ्जाता तया च ज्ञप्तिर् अर्चिता । ज्ञप्त्या सह समुल्लङ्घ्य खम् आश्चर्यमनोरमम्
There, one called Līlā arose, and by her, knowledge was worshipped; together with knowledge, she leapt beyond into the wondrous and delightful sky.
प्रादेशमात्रे नभसि सा तत्रैव गृहोदरे । ब्रह्माण्डान्तरम् आसाद्य गिरिं वासवमन्दिरम्
Within the space of a hand’s breadth, in the very interior of the house, she reached another cosmic egg, a mountain, and the palace of Indra.
ब्रह्माण्डात् परिनिर्गत्य स्वगृहे स्थितिम् आययौ । स्वप्नात् स्वप्नान्तरं प्राप्य यथा तल्पगतः पुमान्
He departed from the cosmic egg and returned to his own house, just as a man lying in bed moves from one dream into another.
प्रतिभामात्रम् एवैतत् सर्वम् आकाशमात्रकम् । न ब्रह्माण्डं न संसारो न कुड्यादि न दूरता
All this is merely a manifestation of consciousness, nothing but space; there is no cosmic egg, no world, no walls or distance.
स्वचित्तम् एव कचति तयोस् तादृङ् मनोहरम् । वासनामात्रसोल्लेखं क्व ब्रह्माण्डं क्व संसृतिः
Only his own mind shines forth, and for both, it is equally enchanting; where is the cosmic egg, where is the cycle of existence, when all arises from mere impressions?
निरावरणम् एवेदं ज्ञप्त्याकाशम् अनन्तकम् । किञ्चित् स्वचित्तेनोन्नीतं स्पन्दयुक्त्येव मारुतः
This space of knowledge is indeed unobstructed and infinite; whatever is stirred by one's own mind appears, just as wind moves by the force of vibration.
चिदाकाशम् अजं शान्तं सर्वत्रैव हि सर्वदा । चित्त्वाज् जगद् इवाभाति स्वयम् एवात्मनात्मनि
The space of consciousness is unborn and peaceful, always and everywhere; through mind alone, the world appears, manifesting itself within itself.
येन बुद्धं तु तस्यैतद् आकाशाद् अपि शून्यकम् । न बुद्धं येन तस्यैतद् वज्रसाराचलोपमम्
For one who is awakened, this is emptier than space; for one who is not awakened, it is as solid and immovable as a mountain of adamant.
गृह एव यथा स्वप्ने नगरं भाति भास्वरम् । तथैतद् असद् एवान्तश् चिद्धातौ भाति भास्वरम्
Just as, in a dream, a radiant city appears while one is at home, so too, within the essence of consciousness, this unreal world shines brightly.
यथा मरुजले ऽम्बुत्वं कटकत्वं च हेमनि । असत् सद् इव भातीदं तथा दृश्यत्वम् आत्मनि
As water appears in a mirage, and gold seems to have the form of a bracelet, so too, this unreal world appears real, and visibility arises within the self.
एवम् आकलयन्त्यौ ते ललने ललनाकृती । गृहान् निर्ययतुर् बाह्यं चारुचङ्क्रमणक्रमैः
Thus, as the two maidens reflected, they, graceful in form, departed from their house and stepped outside with charming, measured steps.
अदृश्ये ग्रामलोकेन प्रेक्षमाणे पुरो गिरिम् । चुम्बिताकाशकुहरं संस्प्र्ष्टादित्यमण्डलम्
With the people of the village unseen, they gazed ahead at the mountain, its caves kissed by the sky and its peaks touched by the sun's orb.
नानावर्णाखिलोत्फुल्लविचित्रवनकम्बलम् । नानानिर्झरनिर्धूतकूजद्वनविहङ्गमम्
It was covered with a wondrous blanket of forests, all blooming in various colors, and alive with birds singing, stirred by many waterfalls.
विचित्रमञ्जरीपुञ्जपिञ्जराम्बुदमण्डलम् । अभ्रकच्छगुलुच्छाग्रविश्रान्तखगसारवम्
There were clusters of marvelous blossoms, clouds tinged with saffron, and flocks of birds resting on the tips of mica rocks.
सारवञ्जुलविस्तारगुप्ताखिलसरित्तटम् । असमाप्तशिलाश्वभ्रलतानर्तनमारुतम्
The banks of all the rivers were hidden by the wide-spreading sāravañjula trees, and the wind played among unfinished rocks, ravines, and dancing creepers.
पुष्पाभ्रपिहिताकाशकोशकुट्टकवारिदम् । पतद्दीर्घसरित्स्रोतस्सितमुक्ताकलापकम्
Clouds, like masses of flowers, veiled the sky, and rainwater collected in hollows, while long rivers carried clusters of shining pearls.
चलद्वृक्षवनव्यूहवातघट्टितदिक्तटम् । नानावनाकुलोपान्तच्छायासततशीतलम्
The wind shook the ranks of moving trees and forests, stirring the edges of the directions, and the shade from the dense woods at the forest's edge brought constant coolness.
अथ ते ललने तत्र तदा ददृशतुस् स्वयम् । तं गिरिग्रामकं व्योम्नस् स्वर्गखण्डम् इव च्युतम्
Then, those two maidens saw for themselves that mountain village, as if a fragment of heaven had fallen from the sky.
