सरित्केसरिकानालम् अवश्यायाम्बुबिन्दुकम् । शर्वरीभ्रमरीभ्रान्तं भूतौघमषकाकुलम्
There were river-like filaments, stalks, and drops of dew; bees wandered about at night, and swarms of beings, like mosquitoes, filled the place.
अन्तर्घुणगणाकीर्णं सुरन्ध्रैस् सुषिरैर् वृतम् । उह्यमानं पयःपूरैर् दिवसालोककान्तिमत्
It was crowded with groups of inner threads, covered with holes made by the gods, and carried along by streams of water, shining with the radiance of daylight.
रसार्द्रं खे भ्रमद्धंसं रात्रिसङ्कोचभाजनम् । पातालपङ्कनिर्मग्ननागनाथमृणालकम्
Moist with sap, with swans wandering in the sky, a vessel for the contraction of night, with lotus-fibers as the lord of serpents sunk in the mire of the netherworld.
कदाचिद् आस्पदाम्भोधिकम्पकम्पितदिग्दलम् । अधो नागगतानन्तदैत्यदानवकण्टकम्
At times, its expanse causes the ocean to tremble, shaking the quarters; below, it is the thorn to the endless demons and titans dwelling among the serpents.
असुरव्रणवल्लर्या सम्भोगसुकुमारया । व्याप्तभूभृन्महाबीजहृदयं बीजभूतया
Its heart, the great seed, is enveloped by the tender creeper of demon-wounds, which is the source of seeds, delighting in union, and pervades the mountain-lord Earth.
जम्बुद्वीप इति ख्यातां विपुलां तत्र कर्णिकाम् । सरित्केसरिकानालां नगरग्रामकेसराम्
There, the vast region known as Jambudvīpa is famed, with its central pericarp, rivers as filaments, and cities and villages as stamens.
कुलशैलोद्धुरोत्तुङ्गबीजसप्तकसुन्दरीम् । मध्यस्थोच्चमहामेरुबीजाक्रान्तनभस्तलाम्
Adorned by the seven beautiful seeds of lofty family-mountains, its sky is spanned by the great central seed, the towering Meru at its heart.
सरःप्रालेयकणिकावनजङ्गलयूथिकाम् । स्वलेखामण्डलान्तस्स्थजनजालाभ्रमण्डलाम्
It is a cluster of lakes, icy droplets, forests, and herds of wild creatures; within its own circle of rays dwell multitudes of people like clouds.
तां योजनशताकारैः प्रतिराकां प्रबोधिभिः । सागरैर् भ्रमरैर् व्याप्तां दिक्चतुष्टयशायिभिः
That land, measured by hundreds of yojanas, is surrounded on all sides by seas, swarms of bees, and the four quarters lying in repose.
दिग्दलाष्टकविश्रान्तसस्वनाम्भोजषट्पदाम् । भ्रातृभिर् नवभिर् भूपैर् नवधा परिकल्पिताम्
Resting on the eight petals of the directions, with the hum of lotuses and bees, it is divided ninefold by its nine brother-kings.
लक्षयोजनविस्तीर्णाम् आकीर्णां च रजोलवैः । नानाजनपदव्यूहस्थिरावश्यायशीकराम्
Spread across a hundred thousand yojanas, crowded with dust particles, and made steady by the arrangement of many regions, it is moistened by dew.
द्वीपात् तु द्विगुणं सालं लवणार्णवलेखया । दधत्या वलितां बाह्ये प्रकोष्ठम् इव कम्बुना
Beyond the continent, twice its size, lies a ring traced by the salt ocean, encircling it outwardly like a curved forearm.
ततो ऽपि द्विगुणं देहं दधत्या वलयाकृतिम् । जगद्भुजलताव्याप्तां शाकाख्यद्वीपलेखया

Then, with a ring of the Krauñcadvīpa of the same measure, it is encircled by the Khātakhada, like a new royal city.
ततो ऽपि च घृताम्भोधिलेखयैवम्प्रमाणया । ततो ऽपि शल्मलिद्वीपलेखयामरपूर्णया
Beyond that, with a ring of the ghee-ocean of the same measure, and beyond that, with a ring of the Śalmalidvīpa, filled with immortals.
ततस् सुरामहाम्भोधिलेखया पुष्पशुभ्रया । शेषस्य देहलतया हरिमूर्तिम् इवाश्रिताम्
Then, with a line of the great ocean of the gods, white as flowers, and with the body of Śeṣa, it appeared as if it had assumed the form of Hari.

निखातवलयेनोच्चैश् श्वभ्रसम्भाररूपिणा । पातालगममार्गेण वलितां भयदात्मना

From all this, then, ten times higher, the sky, with all four directions, formidable with masses of caverns.
अर्धे म्लानतमोरूपलग्ननीलोत्पलस्रजा । नानामाणिक्यशिखरकल्हारकुमुदाब्जया
With a garland of blue lotuses, half-withered and bearing the form of darkness, adorned with various jeweled peaks, lilies, lotuses, and water-lilies.
लोकालोकाचलोत्तालविपुलाट्टालमालया । वलितां त्रिजगल्लक्ष्मीधम्मिल्लवलनाम् इव
Encircled by the vast mountain range of Lokāloka, whose lofty summits resemble the twisted locks of the fortune of the three worlds.
एतस्माद् अथ सर्वस्मात् ततो दशगुणात्मना । अज्ञातभूतसञ्चारनाम्नारण्येन पालिताम्
Beyond all this, and tenfold greater in essence, lies a forest named 'the wanderer of unknown beings,' which protects all.
