बद्धपद्मासनं शान्तं समाधाननिरिङ्गनम् । गुल्फद्वितयमध्यस्थवृषणं विषयातिगम्
He sat in the firm lotus posture, tranquil, intent solely on absorption, his genitals resting between his ankles, beyond all sense-objects.
मृष्टसोम्यसमाभोगस्कन्धबन्धुरकन्धरम् । सुस्थिरोदरविश्रान्तस्थानकस्थितिसुन्दरम्
His shoulders and neck were graceful, his body shining with gentle beauty, his posture steady and elegant, resting with ease in his abdomen.
नाभीनिकटगोत्तानपाणिद्वितयदीप्तिभिः । हृदयाम्भोजतेजोभिर् बहिस्स्थैर् इव भासितम्
Illuminated by the radiance from his hands stretched beside his navel and from the light of the lotus of his heart, he seemed to shine outwardly.
श्लिष्टपक्ष्मेक्षणं क्षीणसर्वेच्छं स्वच्छतां गतम् । सरो निमीलिताम्भोजम् इव सुप्तं दिनात्यये
His eyes, with lids gently closed, were like folded wings; all desires had faded, and he was clear within—like a lotus closing at dusk, as if asleep at the end of the day.
अविक्षुभितम् आशान्तम् अन्तẖकरणकोटरम् । दधानं धीरया वृत्त्या शान्तोत्पातम् इवाम्बरम्
Maintaining an undisturbed, tranquil inner chamber of the mind, with a steady disposition, like the sky free from agitations.
अपश्यता निजं देहं तं मुनिं पश्यता पुरः । इदं मया तदा तत्र चिन्तितं चारुचेतसा
While that sage, not perceiving his own body, appeared before me, I, with a clear mind, thought this at that moment:
अयं कश्चिन् महासिद्धस् सम्प्राप्तो ऽस्मिन् दिगम्बरे । चिरायाहम् इवैकान्तविश्रमार्थी महाम्बरम्
Some great accomplished one has arrived in this sky-clad expanse; for a long time, like me, he seeks solitary rest in the vast sky.
समाधियोग्यम् एकान्तं लभेयेतीह चिन्तया । कुटी दृष्टेयम् एतेन सत्यसङ्कल्पशालिना
He is contemplating here, 'May I find a secluded place suitable for meditation'; this hut has been seen by him, endowed with firm resolve.
मदागमनम् एतेन ततो ऽचिन्तयताचलम् । तं मद्देहं शवीभूतम् अपास्येह कृता स्थितिः
Because of his unwavering thought about my arrival, he decided, 'I will abandon this body, now lifeless, and leave this place.'
तद् इहास्ताम् अयं यामि स्वं लोकम् इति निश्चयी । यावद् गन्तुं प्रवृत्तो ऽस्मि तावत् सङ्कल्पनक्षयात्
He resolved, 'Let this remain here; I will go to my own realm.' As I was about to depart, due to the cessation of intention—
सा निवृत्ता कुटी तत्र सम्पन्नं व्योम केवलम् । स सिद्धो ऽथ निराधारḫ पतितो ऽधस् समाधिमान्
That hut there vanished; only pure space remained. Then that accomplished one, established in samadhi, fell downward, unsupported.
स्वप्नसङ्कल्पसंशान्तौ स्वप्नसङ्कल्पपत्तनम् । यथा साशु कुटी नष्टा मत्सङ्कल्पोपशान्तितः
When the dream-intention ceases, the city of dream-intention disappears; just so, that hut was instantly lost when my intention subsided.
स पपात ततो ध्यानी जलोत्पीड इवाम्बुदात् । खाद् इवानिलनुन्नो ऽब्द इन्दुर् दिव इव क्षये
Then that meditator fell, like a drop of water from a cloud, like the moon from the sky at the end of its course, or like a cloud driven away by the wind.
वैमानिक इवापुण्यश् छिन्नमूल इव द्रुमः । खात् त्यक्त इव पाषाणस् स पपात ततो ऽवनौ
He fell to the ground like a celestial being deprived of merit, like a tree whose roots are cut, or like a stone cast out from a pit.
अहं यावद् इयं तावत् कुटिकास्त्व् इति कल्पने । क्षीणे कुटीक्षये जाते स सिद्धḫ पतितẖ क्षणात्
As long as the thought remained, 'Let this hut exist,' when the hut was destroyed, that accomplished one instantly fell.
पतता तेन सिद्धेन ततस् सौजन्यकौतुकात् । सार्धम् एवाहम् अगमं नभसो वसुधातलम्
As that accomplished one was falling, out of curiosity and goodwill, I too descended from the sky to the earth together with him.
सो ऽपतत् पवनस्कन्धवलनावर्तवृत्तिभिः । सप्तद्वीपसमुद्रान्तगीर्वाणरमणावनौ
He fell, carried by the currents and eddies of the wind, onto the earth beloved by the celestial beings, bounded by the seven continents and oceans.
प्राणापानोर्ध्वगामित्वात् खाद् यथास्थितम् एव सः । स्पष्ट एवोर्ध्वमूर्धोर्व्यां बद्धपद्मासनो ऽपतत्
Because his life-breaths were moving upward, he landed just as he was, clearly upright, seated in the lotus posture, with his head upward on the ground.
न प्रबुद्धो बभूवासाव् इव नूनम् अचेतनः । पाषाणदेह इव वा वातूलात्मेव वा लघुः
He did not become conscious, as if truly insensible, like a body of stone or like one whose self is moved by the wind, light in nature.
मया तदवबोधार्थम् अथ यत्नवता तदा । कृत्वा जलदतां व्योम्नो वृष्टं गर्जितम् ऊर्जितम्
Then, in order to understand that, I made a great effort and, taking on the form of a cloud in the sky, I produced a powerful rain and thunder.
करकाशनिपातेन तेन तस्मिन् दिगन्तरे । मयूरḫ प्रावृषीवासौ बुद्धो ऽबोधि वनावनेः
By the striking of that thunderbolt in that other direction, the peacock, as in the rainy season, became awakened from the forest of ignorance.
बभाव् आसादिताङ्गश्रीर् विकासितविलोचनः । धारानिकरफुल्लात्मा प्रावृषीवाम्बुजाकरः
He appeared with limbs adorned, eyes opened wide, his heart blossoming with streams of delight, like a lotus pond in the rains.
प्रबुद्धं सम्प्रशान्तायां वृष्टौ तम् अहम् अग्रतः । अपृच्छं स्वच्छम् आवृत्त्या निवृत्तं परमार्थतः
When the rain had ceased and he was awakened and tranquil, I approached him and asked, with a clear and open mind, now truly at rest.
क्व स्थितो ऽसि करोषीदं किं च भो मुनिनायक । कस् त्वं कस्माद् अलं दूरान् न भ्रंशम् अपि चेतसि
Where are you situated? What are you doing here, O leader of sages? Who are you, and for what reason does your mind not fall even a little from such distance?
इत्य् उक्तो माम् असौ प्रेक्ष्य संस्मृत्य प्राक्तनीं गतिम् । उवाच वचनं चारु चातको जलदं यथा
Thus addressed, he looked at me, recalling his previous state, and spoke sweet words, like a chataka bird to a cloud.
प्रतिपालय मे यावत् स्ववृत्तान्तं स्मराम्य् अहम् । कथयिष्यामि ते पश्चात् पाश्चात्यं वृत्तम् आत्मनः
Wait for me until I remember my own story; afterwards I will tell you the later events of my life.
इत्य् उक्त्वा चिन्तयित्वाशु स यथावृत्तम् अक्षतम् । स्मृतवान् सायम् अह्नीव समाचरितम् आत्मनः
Having said this, he quickly reflected and remembered, just as it happened, the actions of his own self, as one recalls the day at evening.
माम् अथोवाच वचनं चारु चन्द्रांशुशीतलम् । आह्लादकम् अनिन्द्यं च निरवद्यं सुखोदयम्
Then he spoke to me words that were charming, cool as moonbeams, delightful, blameless, flawless, and bringing happiness.
अधुना त्वं मया ब्रह्मन् परिज्ञातो ऽभिवादये । अतिक्रमो ऽयं क्षन्तव्यस् स्वभावो हि सतां क्षमा
Now, O Brahman, I have recognized you and offer my respects; forgive this transgression, for forgiveness is the nature of the virtuous.
मुने चिरम् अहं भ्रान्तो देवोपवनभूमिषु । भोगामोदविमोहेषु षट्पदḫ पद्मिनीष्व् इव
O sage, for a long time I wandered, deluded, in the gardens of the gods, intoxicated by pleasures, like a bee among lotuses.
