Elsewhere, trees press against each other, crowding with their thick branches; in some places, the dense bones of mountains are tossed about by the surging waves of the ocean.
There is the tight pressing of withered leaves shrinking together; sometimes, the sun's rays, with their fiery hands, draw out the very essence of sap.
Somewhere, the trees fall with a harsh crash, struck by the blows of elephants in their mountain dwellings, their massive bodies collapsing with fierce and unyielding force.
Elsewhere, there is a gentle, wavering motion, as if the eyes are half-closed and the body is softly bending; sometimes, there is a fresh, subtle gleam, as new shoots begin to shine forth.
At some places, it is like the residue left by flies, honeybees, or mosquitoes; elsewhere, it is furrowed and drawn by the playful scraping of hoes, ploughs, and sharp tools.
In some places, it is cold, with limbs shattered by the cold, skin broken and scattered, water turned to stone, and harsh winds blowing.
Elsewhere, the earth is soft and muddy, teeming with worms and insects, sometimes with the roots of lotuses and other aquatic plants emerging from the water.
Sometimes, the water is quietly hidden within, bringing coolness inside and roughness outside; in some places, it is boldly sprouting with clusters of new shoots like hairs.
With beds of tender lotus leaves trembling in the slightest breeze, a sense of peace is produced in my limbs by the lakes, as if by a lover separated from his beloved.
Having established the earth element in meditation, you are able to observe the worlds; if this is accomplished for the earth, what then of the mind-created world?
Both this world and the mind-created world are accomplished by me; neither this nor the mind-created world truly exist—only I am truly accomplished.
On the support of the earth without the mind, nothing at all arises; whatever you know as unreal or real is only a formation of the mind.
I am the pure space of consciousness; for me, there is nothing apart from the Self. Whatever is of the nature of pure consciousness is known as 'imagination' (saṅkalpa).
That is the mind, that is the earth-plane, that is the world, and that is the Creator; like a city of imagination in space, this expanse of mind moves about in the sky of consciousness.
Thus, for me, everything is merely imagination, merely mind, spread out and strengthened by the practice of concentration, and is established as the earth-globe.
This earth-globe is not truly that; it is something else, made of mind, merely a formation in space, insentient, a construct within consciousness.
That very thing, whose nature is only space, abides thus for a long time; but, because it is apprehended as 'this', it loses its status as mental.
This earth-globe, stable, solid, and extended, gives rise to the notion 'it exists' in the sky itself, due to long-standing perception.
By this reasoning, this earth-plane appears established; yet, in the very beginning of creation, it did not arise in this way.
Just as in a dream, pure consciousness alone appears as a city before oneself in space, so too, at the beginning of creation, consciousness alone stands as this world.
Know that the kingdom of the mind of the one whose nature is consciousness is the three worlds; all this visible creation, from the earth and so on, is always a projection.
For the self whose nature is consciousness, there is no other intention; this world is made of that alone. In reality, it is not a solid entity, not truly existent, nor radiant.
The visible exists as long as it is not known; once known, it is not found. That very knowing is what you have been hearing about for so long.
All is pure consciousness, like space, shining forth from the self within the self; it is free from both the nature of the earth and the nature of the visible, devoid of duality and unity.
Just as a jewel, by its own nature, produces white, yellow, and other colors without actually doing so, in the same way, the space of consciousness appears as the world.
Because it does nothing and does not abandon its own form, therefore, this earth and all this is not a mental creation, nor does anything exist here.
What appears as the earth is in fact only the uninterrupted sky of consciousness; in the self alone, the earth and sky are established, just as a spotless surface is reflected.
At that time, for me, everything was established as merely the radiance of its own nature; like the earth-globe, utterly clear, it was only the expanse of space.
This earth and its sphere, both, are but the nature of the great consciousness; they shine forth as your dream-city does.
Because of the long-standing conviction, it is understood as stable; yet, when known as it truly is, it is nothing but the infinite space of consciousness.
