यथा खम् आवृतं सर्गैस् तथा भूर् इति बुद्धवान् । तदाहम् अभवं ध्याता धराधारणया युतः
Just as the sky is covered by creations, so I, understanding 'this is earth,' became the meditator, endowed with the power to sustain the earth.
तया धराधारणया धरारूपधरो ऽभवम् । अत्यजन्न् एव चिद्व्योमवपुस् सम्राड् इवाचिरात्
By that power of sustaining the earth, I took on the form of the earth, yet without abandoning my nature as pure consciousness, like a sovereign in an instant.
धराधारणयाश्व् एव धराधातूदरं गतः । द्वीपाद्रितृणवृक्षादि देहे ऽहम् अनुभूतवान्
Just as the earth is sustained by its foundation, I entered the interior of the earth, and within this body I experienced islands, mountains, grasses, trees, and so on.
सम्पन्नो ऽस्म्य् अथ भूपीठं नानावनतनूरुहम् । नानारत्नावलीव्याप्तं नानानगरभूषणम्
Then I became the earth's surface, with its diverse forests and various forms of vegetation, adorned with many strings of jewels and decorated by numerous cities.
ग्रामगह्वरपर्वाढ्यं पातालसुषिरोदरम् । कुलाचलभुजाश्लिष्टद्वीपाब्धिवलयान्वितम्
Rich with villages, valleys, and mountains, with deep caverns and subterranean passages, encircled by the arms of great ranges and girdled by oceans and islands.
तृणौघतनुरोमाढ्यं गिरिषण्डकगुल्फकम् । दिग्वारणकटव्यूढं धृतं शेषशिरश्शतैः
Abundant with clusters of grass as fine as body hair, with the ankles formed by mountain ranges, fortified by forests at the boundaries of the directions, and held up by hundreds of heads of the serpent Śeṣa.
ह्रियमाणं महीपालैश् शोभमानं तथर्तुभिः । प्राणिभिर् भुज्यमानाङ्गं वर्धमानं व्यवस्थया
Carried off by kings, shining with the changing seasons, my limbs enjoyed by living beings, and steadily increasing in accordance with their activities.
हिमवद्विन्ध्यसुस्कन्धं सुमेरूदारकन्धरम् । गङ्गादिसरिदापूरमुक्ताहाररणत्तनु
With the lofty shoulders of the Himalayas and Vindhya, the noble neck of Mount Sumeru, filled with rivers like the Ganges, and adorned with necklaces of pearls.
गुहागहनकच्छादि सागरादर्शमण्डलम् । मरूषरस्थलश्वैत्र्यम् अम्बराम्बरसुन्दरम्
With caves, dense forests, marshes, and the circle of the ocean as a mirror, with deserts and white plains, and beautiful expanses of sky.
भूतपूरैḫ परापूर्णं परिधूतं महार्णवैः । अलङ्कृतं पुष्पवनैस् समालब्धं रजोगणैः
Filled to the brim with hosts of beings, surrounded by vast oceans, adorned with flower gardens, and covered with clouds of dust.
नित्यं कृषीवलैẖ कृष्टं वीजितं शिशिरानिलैः । तापितं तपनैस् तप्तैर् उक्षितं प्रावृडम्बुभिः
Constantly ploughed by farmers, sown with seeds, cooled by winter winds, scorched by the burning sun, and drenched by the rains of the monsoon—
विपुलाग्रस्थलोरस्कं पद्माकरशतेक्षणम् । सितासितघनोष्णीषं दशाशोदरमन्दिरम्
With a broad, high chest, eyes like a hundred lotus ponds, wearing white and black turbans, it is the abode of the ten directions.
लोकालोकमहाखातवलयोग्रास्यभीषणम् । अनन्तभूतसङ्घातपरिस्पन्दैकचेतनम्
Frightful with the gaping mouths of the great chasm of Lokāloka, it is animated by the single consciousness that stirs the endless multitude of beings.
व्याप्तम् अन्तर् बहिश् चैव नानाभूतगणैḫ पृथक् । देवदानवगन्धर्वैर् बहिर् अन्तस् तु कीटकैः
It is filled, both within and without, by various groups of beings: gods, demons, and gandharvas outside, and insects within.
पातालेन्द्रियरन्ध्रेषु नागासुरक्रिमिव्रजैः । सप्तस्व् अर्णवकोशेषु नानाजातिजलेचरैः
In the cavities of the underworld and the sense-organs dwell hosts of serpents, demons, and worms; in the seven oceanic layers, creatures of many kinds and aquatic beings.
व्याप्तं नदीवनसमुद्रदिगन्तशैलद्वीपाब्दजन्तुविजयस्थलजङ्गलौघैः । नानावनावलितमण्डलकोट्टषण्डवल्लीसरस्सरिदरातिरणाब्जषण्डैः
It is pervaded by rivers, forests, seas, horizons, mountains, islands, and multitudes of creatures; by circles of various forests, clusters of groves, creepers, lakes, streams, deserts, and assemblies of lotuses.
भूपीठेन सता तत्र मया तदनु मानद । अनुभूतं नदनदीनादिनेदं दिने दिने
With the earth as my seat, I experienced all this, O gracious one, day after day—the sounds of rivers and streams, and the noises of the world.
क्वचिन् मरणसाक्रन्दनारीकरुणवेदनम् । क्वचिद् उत्ताण्डवस्त्रैणमहोत्सवमहासुखम्
At times, the pitiful cries of women mourning death; at times, the great joy of splendid festivals and the happiness of lovers.
क्वचिद् दुर्वारदुर्भिक्षदुराक्रन्ददुरीहितम् । क्वचित् सकलसस्यौघसम्पन्नघनसौहृदम्
In some places, there is irresistible famine, wailing, and misfortune; elsewhere, there is abundant harvest and deep friendship among all.
क्वचिद् अग्निमहादाहदग्धदेशोग्ररोदनम् । क्वचिज् जलप्लवालूनपुरपत्तनखण्डकम्
In some places, there is fierce lamentation over lands scorched by great fires; elsewhere, towns and cities are shattered by overwhelming floods.
क्वचिच् चपलसामन्तकृतलुण्ठनमण्डलम् । क्वचिद् उद्दामदौरात्म्यरक्षḫपैशाचमण्डलम्
In some places, there are regions plundered by restless chieftains; elsewhere, domains overrun by fierce, wicked demons and spirits.
क्वचिज् जलाशयोल्लासवेल्लनोत्पुलकाङ्गकम् । कन्दरोदरनिष्क्रान्तवातवेल्लितवारिदम्
In some places, the bodies of creatures are thrilled by the swelling and surging of lakes; elsewhere, clouds are tossed by winds emerging from mountain caves.
संविद्बोधोन्नमत्स्वाङ्गकोशोत्थाङ्कुरलोमकम् । वारिवारणविक्षोभनतोन्नतलसत्तलम्
There, the hairs on bodies stand erect, sprouting from the sheath of self-awareness; the surface of the earth is raised by the agitation of water-elephants.
सशृङ्गभैरवश्वभ्रपुराद्रिवनझम्पनम् । सन्धिमण्डलसञ्चाललेखाङ्कमृदुकम्पनम्
There is the leaping of wild beasts, jackals, and wolves in cities, mountains, and forests; and the gentle trembling of the earth marked by shifting lines at the joints of its regions.
क्वचित् सामन्तसङ्क्षुब्धसैन्यसंहरणं रणे । क्वचित् सोम्यसुखासीनसर्वसामन्तमण्डलम्
In some places, armies of chieftains are routed in battle; elsewhere, all the chieftains are peacefully seated together in comfort.
अरण्यं क्वचिद् आशून्यम् उल्लसद्वातभाङ्कृति । जङ्गलं क्वचिद् आलूनव्युप्तसम्पन्नसस्यकम्
In some places, the forest is not empty, its form shaped by the play of lively winds; elsewhere, the wilderness is flooded, rich with abundant crops.
हंसकारण्डवाकीर्णसरḫ फुल्लाम्बुजं क्वचित् । क्वचिन् मरुस्थलं स्थूलस्तम्भाभार्जुनमारुतम्
In some places, there are lakes crowded with swans and waterfowl, blooming with lotuses; elsewhere, there are deserts, with strong winds like the blasts of a great storm.
क्वचिद् ध्रदनदीवाहहेलानिकषघर्घरम् । क्वचिद् अङ्कुरकार्यङ्गसिक्तबीजास्यजृम्भणम्
Somewhere, there is the rumbling sound of clouds being ground together by the playful clash of mountain peaks; elsewhere, the tender sprouting of seeds as they are moistened and begin to swell.
क्वचिद् अन्तस्स्थकीटास्यमृदुस्पन्दनवेदनम् । मां त्वम् एवाशु बुद्ध्वेह त्रायस्वेतीव बोधनम्
In some places, there is the subtle quivering felt within the mouths of insects dwelling inside; and, as if awakening, there is the sudden realization: 'Recognize me here quickly and deliver me.'
शाखापरिकराभोगमृद्भागाङ्गनिपीडनैः । मूलजालम् अवष्टभ्य क्वचिद् विटपिधारणम्
With the pressure of branches and the weight of their clusters, sometimes the roots tightly grasp the earth, supporting the tree's canopy.
