घनशात्कृतबाष्पाभ्रैẖ कल्पाभ्रैर् अपि मेदुरैः । अन्धीकृतार्कजालांशुतमोनिबिडमन्थरम्
With thick clouds formed from vapor, and even denser wish-fulfilling clouds, making the rays of the sun dark and the sky heavy with deep gloom.
विशीर्णवसुधापीठखण्डखण्डैर् गलत्तटैः । उह्यमानैर् लुठच्छैलपत्तनैस् सङ्कटार्णवम्
With fragments of the earth's surface broken and falling away, and with drifting, tumbling mountain peaks, the ocean becomes perilous and impassable.
ऊर्म्यद्र्युन्नयनच्छिन्नघनैर् घर्घरमारुतैः । समुद्रघोषैर् गम्भीरनिर्घातैर् भग्नदिक्तटम्
With roaring winds that shatter the dense clouds, raising tumultuous sounds like the ocean, and with deep, thunderous crashes breaking the quarters’ boundaries—
ब्रह्माण्डकुड्यक्रोडाग्रकुट्टकैẖ कटुटाङ्कृतैः । कल्पाभ्रविकटास्फोटैर् घट्टितैकार्णवारटि
With the fierce blows of the winds, as if striking the walls of the cosmic egg at its edge, and with the dreadful bursts of the clouds of dissolution, churning the single ocean—
स्वर्गपातालभूलोकखण्डखण्डैर् विमिश्रितैः । यथास्वभावं तिष्ठद्भिर् मरुद्भुग्नैर् वृताम्बरम्
With fragments of heaven, netherworld, and earth mixed together, each remaining according to its own nature, and with the sky enveloped by winds bent and twisted—
मृतार्धमृतदग्धार्धदग्धाङ्गैर् देवदानवैः । अन्योऽन्यदर्शनाद् वातवेल्लितैर् भ्रमितायुधम्
With gods and demons, half-dead, half-burnt, with limbs scorched or destroyed, their weapons spinning as they are tossed by the wind, unable to see one another—
कल्पान्तपवनोद्भ्रान्तैर् लोकान्तरजरत्तृणैः । आरब्धार्जुनवाताख्यस्तम्भम् उद्धूमभस्मभिः
With the withered grasses of other worlds, driven about by the storm at the end of the age, and with columns of smoke and ash rising, begun by the wind called Arjuna—
उह्यमानशिलाजालप्रहारविलुठत्तटैः । पतल्लोकान्तरैस् तारटुष्कारकटुटाङ्कृतम्
With rocks and boulders being carried and dashed about, the shores torn apart by their blows, and with the realms falling, made harsh and dreadful by the scattering of stars—
वातोद्व्यूढगिरिव्रातगुहाभाङ्कारभासुरम् । पतद्भिर् विहितावर्तं लोकपालपुरीपुरैः
With the caves of mountain ranges heaped up by the wind, shining with terror, and with the cities of the guardians of the worlds falling, creating swirling eddies—
कृतकर्कशनिर्ह्रादैर् असुरैर् इव मारुतैः । उह्यमानवनव्यूहप्रोतवातायनैर् वृतम्
With the winds making harsh, dreadful noises like demons, and with forests being carried away, their trees uprooted and the airways blocked—
पुरमण्डलदैत्याग्निसुरनागविवस्वताम् । निकुरुम्बं दधद् व्योम्नि मषकानाम् इवोच्चयम्
Bearing the clustered masses of cities, demons, fires, gods, serpents, and the sun in the sky, like the gathering of mosquitoes.
नश्यन् नगवराभोगभागैर् भग्नसुरालयैः । आवर्तघर्घरारावैर् जलम् ऊर्ध्वम् अधो ऽनलम्
Perishing with the fragments of great mountains, ruined abodes of gods, and the roaring tumult of whirlpools, water rises upward and fire descends below.
कुर्वज् जलाद्रिनिष्पेषैर् दिक्पालपुरकुट्टनम् । निपतद्देवदैत्येन्द्रसिद्धगन्धर्वपत्तनम्
By the crushing of water and mountains, the guardians’ city walls are battered, and the cities of gods, demons, lords, siddhas, and gandharvas fall down.
कुट्टनं पर्वतादीनां प्रशान्ताङ्गाररूपिणाम् । वातैẖ कुर्वत् पदार्थानाम् आसारं रजसाम् इव
The pounding of mountains and others, whose forms are soothed embers, is made by winds, producing a shower of particles as if of dust.
पुराण्य् अमरदैत्यानां भ्रमद्भित्तीनि शातयत् । रत्नैẖ खनखनायन्ति पयांसीव पयस्वताम्
Ancient walls of gods and demons are shattered, and jewels strike and pierce, as waters do among the wealthy.
पूर्णाम्बरं परिपतल्लोकसप्तकमन्दिरैः । चक्रावृत्त्या भ्रमद्रूपैर् अपरैस् सागरैर् इव
The full expanse of the sky is scattered with the seven worlds’ mansions falling, spinning in circular motion, resembling the seas.
हेमस्फटिकवैडूर्यससारमणिमन्दिरैः । दिवḫ पतद्भिर् आकीर्णम् उद्यज्झणझणस्वनैः
The heavens are filled with palaces of gold, crystal, beryl, and precious gems falling, accompanied by the rising sound of clattering.
उत्पेतुर् धूमभस्माब्दाḫ पेतुर् धारापुरोत्कराः । उन्ममज्जुस् तरङ्गौघा ममज्जुर् भूतलाद्रयः
Clouds of smoke and ash arose, torrents of water poured forth, waves surged up, and mountains emerged from the earth.
आवर्तघर्घरारावा मिथोविदलनोद्यताः । जुघूर्णुर् अर्णवाẖ कीर्णाḫ पर्णवत्प्रौढपर्वताः
The oceans, roaring with the grinding sound of their swirling waves, surged forth to crush one another, tossing about, strewn with mountains grown immense like leaves.
क्रन्दच्छिष्टामरगणं दलत्सज्जीवभूतकम् । भ्रमत्केतुशतोत्पातं दुष्प्रेक्षम् अभवज् जगत्
The world became dreadful, filled with the wailing remnants of the gods, the destruction of living beings, and hundreds of blazing comets whirling about—impossible to behold.
मृतार्धमृतया भूतसन्तत्यानिललोलया । अभून् नीरन्ध्रम् आकाशं जीर्णपर्णसवर्णया
The sky became dense, without a gap, filled with the restless winds of a half-dead, half-living host of beings, resembling a mass of withered leaves.
जगद् आसीत् पतच्छृङ्गस्थूलधारौघनिर्भरम् । भ्रश्यद्बृहद्गिरिपुरव्रातपूर्णसरिच्छतम्
The world was covered with torrents pouring from the peaks of falling mountains, and hundreds of rivers filled with the ruins of collapsing great mountain cities.
शाम्यच्छमशमाशब्दशतसङ्गिहुताशनम् । चलाब्धिवलनादोलालोलशैलसरित्तटम्
The fire, joined by the countless sounds of ceasing and unceasing destruction, raged on, while the shores of rivers and mountains trembled, shaken by the rolling of the moving ocean.
तृणराशिसरिन्न्यायमिश्रद्वीपार्णवोत्करम् । अत्यन्तदूरदिग्व्योमक्षणज्वालामहावनम्
There were heaps of islands and oceans mixed together like piles of grass and rivers, and a great forest of flames flashed for a moment across the farthest reaches of space and direction.
वर्षशाम्यद्धुताशोत्थभस्मामोदपतत्सुरम् । भूतपूर्वजगद्भूतं परिविस्मृतसर्गकम्
The gods fell, their bodies perfumed with the ashes of fires now dying out with the rain; the world, as it had existed before, became as if it had forgotten its own creation.
निरर्गलोल्लसन्नादं सार्गलोपशमक्रमम् । सर्गलोभोल्लसच्छेषं वर्गलोकविवर्जितम्
There arose an unrestrained, resounding tumult, gradually silencing all other noises; what remained was the last trace of the world's craving for creation, with all realms now abandoned.
अनारतविपर्यासकारिमारुतनिर्धुतम् । बीजराशिम् इवाजस्रं पूयमानं पुनḫ पुनः
Like a heap of seeds constantly scattered by the ceaseless, deluding wind, it is repeatedly stirred up again and again.
उल्मुकान्योऽन्यनिष्पेषवह्नि चूर्णसुवर्णजैः । रजोभिर् विवृतैर् हेमकुट्टिमाकाशकोटरम्
Like brands of fire, or the sparks produced by friction, or the dust of powdered gold, the sky-vault of the golden palace is filled with particles blown about.
भूमण्डलबृहत्खण्डैर् भ्रष्टैस् सद्वीपसागरैः । पूर्णसप्तमपातालं लुठत्पातालमण्डलैः
With vast fragments of the earth, along with its continents and oceans, fallen and scattered, and the seven netherworlds tossed about in their orbits.
आसप्तमसुतालान्तम् आमहीतलपर्वतम् । आव्योमैकार्णवीभूतं पूर्णं प्रलयवायुभिः
Up to the seventh netherworld, with mountains upon the earth, and the sky turned into a single ocean, all is filled by the winds of dissolution.
