अशङ्कितस्थलीमध्यसञ्जातागाधकूपका । वर्णसङ्करनारीणाम् आसक्तजनभूमिपा
Deep wells appear unexpectedly in the midst of open ground; the land is ruled by those attached to women of mixed castes.
अट्टशीलाखिलजना शवशीलचतुष्पथा । केशैकशीलवनिता पानशीलजनेश्वरा
All people are addicted to gambling; crossroads are littered with corpses; women are obsessed with their hair, and rulers are devoted to drinking.
दुẖखशीलसमाचारा द्वन्द्वशीलाखिलप्रजा । अधर्मशीलवनिता कुशास्त्रशतशीलिनी
All beings are engaged in actions marked by suffering and conflict; women are inclined toward unrighteous conduct, and many follow false doctrines.
दुर्जनाखिलवित्ताढ्या विपद्विहतसज्जना । अनार्यवसुधापाला तदनादृतपण्डिता
The wicked possess all wealth, while the virtuous are struck by misfortune; ignoble rulers govern the land, disregarding learned counsel.
लोभमोहभयद्वेषरागरोगरजोरता । अगम्यगामिपुरुषा रुषाभिहतसद्द्विजा
People are absorbed in greed, delusion, fear, hatred, passion, disease, and impurity; men go to forbidden places, and the good twice-born are afflicted by anger.
अनारतघनाक्रन्दपरापर्यन्तपामरा । दस्यूत्सन्नपुरग्रामदेवद्विजसमाश्रया
The lowly cry out incessantly from one end of the land to the other; cities, villages, temples, and the homes of the twice-born are overrun by bandits.
आपातमधुरारम्भदुẖखदोदर्कभङ्गुरा । आलस्योल्लासविलसत्कार्यवैधुर्यधर्मिणी
Beginnings appear sweet, but their outcome is sorrowful and unstable; indolence and reckless delight cause the failure of all undertakings, violating righteousness.
सर्वापदुपतापार्ता क्रमेणोत्सन्नदिग्गणा । भस्मशेषपुरग्रामा निर्जनाखिलमण्डला
All directions are afflicted by calamities; gradually, the regions are destroyed, leaving only ashes in cities and villages, and the whole land becomes deserted.
रोरूयमाणभस्माभ्रकुण्डलोड्डामराम्बरा । दुर्भगाडम्बरारम्भरोदनोरुरवोदरी
The land resounds with the cries of those adorned with ashes and dust, wearing tattered garments; misfortune and ostentatious beginnings bring only lamentation and wailing.
मुष्टिप्रमाणजनता जनतापानुषङ्गिणी । नीरसाशेषदेशान्ता सर्वर्तुगुणवर्जिता
The population is reduced to handfuls, with suffering clinging to the people; all regions are drained of vitality, and every season is devoid of virtue.
इत्य् अस्य पार्थिवे धातौ ब्रह्मणो गतवेदने । पृथिवी पृथुवैधुर्या सम्पन्नासन्ननाशतः
Thus, when the earth element lost its awareness of Brahman, the earth, with its great diversity, came to the verge of dissolution.
अथ तत्संविदुन्मुक्तो जलधातुẖ क्षयोन्मुखः । यदा विक्षुभितात्मासीत् तदा नियतिलङ्घिनः
Then, as that consciousness withdrew, the water element turned toward destruction; when its own nature became agitated, it began to transgress its bounds.
समुत्सार्यार्यमर्यादाम् अर्णवा विवृतार्णसः । प्रवृत्ता विकृतिं गन्तुम् उन्मत्ता इव राविणः
Casting aside all noble limits, the oceans, with their open mouths, began to act wildly, like mad elephants, intent on transformation.
वीचिविक्षोभविन्यासैर् वेलाविपिनलावकाः । कल्लोलवलनावर्तविवर्तोद्वर्तिताद्रयः
With the tossing of their waves, the shores became scattered with forests; mountains were overturned by the rolling, swirling, and surging of billows.
शीकरौघमहारम्भघनसंवलिताचलाः । चलाचलवलद्वीरमकराघूर्णितान्तराः
Great masses of spray enveloped the mountains; the space between moving and unmoving things was churned by the whirling of mighty sea creatures.
उल्ललन्मकराक्रान्तद्रुमकाननितोदराः । दरीविदारणभ्रष्टसिंहाहतजलेचराः
The bellies of the seas, churned by leaping makaras, were filled with uprooted trees and forests; aquatic creatures, struck by lions fallen from split caves, wandered the waters.
उत्फालमकरच्छिन्ननभश्चरबृहद्घनाः । परस्परोर्मिसङ्घट्टडाक्कारकटुटाङ्कृताः
Huge clouds, torn by the rising makaras and flying through the sky, were battered by the crashing of opposing waves, resounding with harsh thunder.
तरत्तरङ्गमातङ्गफूत्काराधौतभास्कराः । अन्योऽन्यवेल्लनव्यग्रप्रविदीर्णाद्रिभित्तयः
The sun was washed clean by the trumpeting of wave-elephants; mountain cliffs, freshly split by the collision of surging waters, were shattered anew.
तटपर्वतलुण्ठाकतरङ्गकरमण्डलाः । गर्जद्गिरिदरीगेहविशदुन्मत्तवारयः

भूपाḫ परपुराक्रान्तौ लग्ना इव हतारयः । तारारवरणद्रीढाविद्रावितनभश्चराः

प्रलुण्ठितवनव्यूहलूनकाननिताम्बराः । सपक्षपर्वताकारतरङ्गापूरिताम्बराः
With forests plundered and groves stripped bare, their leafy coverings torn away; the sky filled with waves shaped like mountains with wings.
महारवमरुद्भिन्नकलोलाचलचालिताः । चञ्चत्तीरगिरिव्रातपतत्तटरटज्जलाः
Shaken by the great roar of the wind, the restless mountains are set in motion; the waters leap upon the trembling banks and the slopes of the hills.
उल्ललद्विपुलावर्तप्रोत्क्षिप्तमकरोत्कराः । निमज्जन्निस्तलावर्तनिगीर्णगिरिकन्दराः

दरीदलनसम्प्राप्तदृषद्दशनदन्तुराः । शृङ्गलम्बिदरीप्रोतमग्नवीचिजलेभकाः । व्यालोलवलनाक्रान्तविटपिप्रोतकच्छपाः
With waves whose jagged crests resemble the teeth of rocks entering the mountain clefts; elephants of the water plunging into caves hanging from the peaks; and turtles clinging to the branches, swept along by the swirling currents.
यमेन्द्रवसुधावाहैर् उत्कर्णैर् भयविह्वलैः । श्रूयमाणपतच्छैलतटीकटकटारवाः

मत्स्यपुच्छच्छटाच्छिन्नमग्नोन्मग्नद्रुताद्रयः । नीलालूनवनव्यूहशेवालाशारवारयः

प्रज्वलद्वडवावह्निज्वालाचलमिलज्जलाः । स्वरसेन विभोर् नाशे विशन्तीव महानलम्
