चिच्छिलेयम् अनाद्यन्ता साद्यन्तास्मीति बोधतः । साकारापि निराकारा जगदङ्गेति संस्थिता
This consciousness, without beginning or end, is perceived as having both; though it has form, it is formless, established as a limb of the world.
यद्वत् स्वप्ने चिद् एव स्वं रूपं व्योमैव पत्तनम् । वेत्ति तद्वद् इयं वेत्ति पाषाणं जगदङ्गकम्
Just as, in a dream, consciousness knows its own form and the sky as a city, so too does it know this stone as a limb of the world.
न सरन्तीह सरितो न चक्रं परिवर्तते । नार्थाḫ परिणमन्त्य् अन्तẖ कचत्य् एतच् चिदम्बरम्
Here, rivers do not flow, wheels do not turn, objects do not transform; this is the space of consciousness, silent and unmoving.
न महाकल्पकल्पान्तसंविदस् संविदम्बरे । सम्भवन्ति पृथग्रूपाḫ पयसीव पयोऽन्तरम्
Even at the end of great cycles of time, in the space of consciousness, distinct forms do not arise, just as there is no difference within water itself.
जगन्ति सन्त्य् एव न सन्ति शान्ते चिदम्बरे सर्वगतैकमूर्तौ । नभोऽन्तराणीव महानभोऽन्तश् चेत् सन्ति तत् तानि पराम्बराणि
Worlds exist, yet do not exist, in the tranquil space of consciousness, which is all-pervading and of a single form; like spaces within space, if they exist, they are but supreme spaces.
वसिष्ठ तद् गच्छ मुने जगत् स्वं त्वं वासने सम्प्रति शान्तिम् एहि । बुद्ध्यादिरूपाणि परं व्रजन्तु वयं बृहद्ब्रह्मपदं व्रजामः
Vasiṣṭha, go now, O sage, to your own world; you, through your impressions, attain peace. Let forms such as intellect depart; we shall enter the vast abode of Brahman.
इत्य् उक्त्वा भगवान् ब्रह्मा ब्रह्मलोकजनैस् सह । बद्धपद्मासनो ऽनन्तसमाधानगतो ऽभवत्
Having spoken thus, the venerable Brahma, together with the inhabitants of Brahmaloka, assumed the lotus posture and entered into endless samadhi.
ओङ्कारोर्ध्वार्धमात्रान्तश् शान्तनिश्शेषमानसः । लिपिकर्मार्पिताकार आसीद् आशान्तवेदनः
With his mind utterly tranquil and free from all disturbance, ending in the upper half-syllable of Om, he took on the form assigned by the script of fate, his sensations completely stilled.
तम् एवानुसरन्ती सा तथैव ध्यानगा सती । वासनासीद् अशेषाशाशान्ता वाकाशरूपिणी
She too, following him in the same way and absorbed in meditation, became desireless, her hopes entirely pacified, her speech taking the form of space.
परमेष्ठिन्य् असङ्कल्पे तस्मिंस् तानवम् ईयुषि । सर्वगानन्तचिद्व्योमरूपो ऽपश्यम् अहं तदा
When Parameshthi entered that subtle state free of thought, I then perceived the all-pervading form of consciousness, like the sky, extending everywhere.
यावत् सङ्कल्पनं तस्य विरसीभवति क्षणात् । यथैवाशु तथैवोर्व्यास् साद्रिद्वीपपयोनिधेः
The moment his imagination faded, just as swiftly as the earth with its mountains, islands, and oceans vanishes, so too did all appear to dissolve.
तृणगुल्मलताशालिसमुद्भवनशक्तता । समस्तैवास्तम् आगन्तुम् आरब्धा सा शनैश् शनैः
The power that brings forth grass, bushes, creepers, and rice began, slowly and gradually, to subside entirely.
किल तस्य विराडात्मरूपस्याङ्गैकदेशताम् । सा बिभर्ति मही तेन तदसंवेदनोदयात्
Indeed, this earth bears the status of but a single limb of that cosmic form, and thus, due to the cessation of his awareness, she lost her vitality.
विचेतना सा विरसा बभूव परिजर्जरा । मार्गशीर्षान्तवल्लीव जराविधुरतां गता
She became insentient, faded, and utterly worn out, like a creeper at the end of the winter month of Margashirsha, afflicted by the ravages of age.
यथास्माकम् असंवित्तेर् अङ्गाली विरसा भवेत् । तथा विरिञ्चासंवित्तेर् धरा वैधुर्यम् आगता
Just as a limb becomes numb when we lack awareness, so too the earth has become dull due to the absence of awareness in Brahma.
सम्पन्नसंहतानेकमहोत्पातभरावृता । दुष्कृताङ्गारनिर्दग्धनरकोन्मुक्तमानवा
It is filled with countless disasters and calamities, crowded with people released from hell, their bodies scorched by evil deeds.
दुर्भिक्षाकाण्डदौस्स्थित्यदैन्यदारिद्र्यदुर्भगा । दुश्शीलाशेषवनितानिर्मर्यादनरावृता
It is plagued by famine, instability, misery, poverty, and misfortune, and populated by men devoid of virtue, surrounded by women without restraint.
पांसुप्रतर्दनीहारधूलिधूसरसूर्यभाक् । द्वन्द्विमूर्खमहादुẖखव्यसनिव्याधिताकुला
Covered in dust, mist, and smoke, its sunlight dimmed, it is overwhelmed by suffering, distress, disease, and filled with foolish people caught in endless conflict.
अग्निदाहजलापूरयुद्धप्रोच्छिन्नमण्डला । अवृष्ट्यवग्रहोन्नष्टकष्टचेष्टितपामरा
Its regions are devastated by fire, flood, and war; its people are ruined by drought, planetary afflictions, and the hardships of their actions.
अशङ्कितमहोत्पातपतत्पर्वतपत्तना । शिशुश्रोत्रियपुण्यार्यगुणिनाशरुदज्जना
Mountains and cities collapse in sudden disasters; children, priests, the virtuous, and noble people are destroyed, leaving the land full of grief.
अशङ्कितस्थलीमध्यसञ्जातागाधकूपका । वर्णसङ्करनारीणाम् आसक्तजनभूमिपा
Deep wells appear unexpectedly in the midst of open ground; the land is ruled by those attached to women of mixed castes.
अट्टशीलाखिलजना शवशीलचतुष्पथा । केशैकशीलवनिता पानशीलजनेश्वरा
All people are addicted to gambling; crossroads are littered with corpses; women are obsessed with their hair, and rulers are devoted to drinking.
दुẖखशीलसमाचारा द्वन्द्वशीलाखिलप्रजा । अधर्मशीलवनिता कुशास्त्रशतशीलिनी
All beings are engaged in actions marked by suffering and conflict; women are inclined toward unrighteous conduct, and many follow false doctrines.
दुर्जनाखिलवित्ताढ्या विपद्विहतसज्जना । अनार्यवसुधापाला तदनादृतपण्डिता
The wicked possess all wealth, while the virtuous are struck by misfortune; ignoble rulers govern the land, disregarding learned counsel.
लोभमोहभयद्वेषरागरोगरजोरता । अगम्यगामिपुरुषा रुषाभिहतसद्द्विजा
People are absorbed in greed, delusion, fear, hatred, passion, disease, and impurity; men go to forbidden places, and the good twice-born are afflicted by anger.
अनारतघनाक्रन्दपरापर्यन्तपामरा । दस्यूत्सन्नपुरग्रामदेवद्विजसमाश्रया
The lowly cry out incessantly from one end of the land to the other; cities, villages, temples, and the homes of the twice-born are overrun by bandits.
आपातमधुरारम्भदुẖखदोदर्कभङ्गुरा । आलस्योल्लासविलसत्कार्यवैधुर्यधर्मिणी
Beginnings appear sweet, but their outcome is sorrowful and unstable; indolence and reckless delight cause the failure of all undertakings, violating righteousness.
सर्वापदुपतापार्ता क्रमेणोत्सन्नदिग्गणा । भस्मशेषपुरग्रामा निर्जनाखिलमण्डला
All directions are afflicted by calamities; gradually, the regions are destroyed, leaving only ashes in cities and villages, and the whole land becomes deserted.
रोरूयमाणभस्माभ्रकुण्डलोड्डामराम्बरा । दुर्भगाडम्बरारम्भरोदनोरुरवोदरी
The land resounds with the cries of those adorned with ashes and dust, wearing tattered garments; misfortune and ostentatious beginnings bring only lamentation and wailing.
मुष्टिप्रमाणजनता जनतापानुषङ्गिणी । नीरसाशेषदेशान्ता सर्वर्तुगुणवर्जिता
The population is reduced to handfuls, with suffering clinging to the people; all regions are drained of vitality, and every season is devoid of virtue.
