निबध्नात्य् आत्मना पीठं कुलाचल इव स्थिरम् । फलस्य रचयत्य् ऊर्ध्वे घटिकां मङ्गलाचिताम्
He establishes a seat with his own self, firm as a mountain of his lineage, and constructs above it a vessel adorned with auspiciousness for the fruit.
विवेकफलवृक्षे तु वर्धमाने दिने दिने । छायावितानवलिते पुंसो हृदयकानने
As the tree of discernment's fruit grows day by day, its shade spreads over the heart's forest of the person.
प्रवर्तते शीतलता तलतापापहारिणी । अत्युल्लसन्मतिलतातुषारोदरसुन्दरी
There arises a coolness, removing the heat from below, exceedingly radiant, beautiful within, and filled with the dust of pure wisdom.
यस्याम् अवान्तरश्रान्तो विश्राम्यति मनोमृगः । आजन्मजीर्णपथिकḫ पथि कोलाहलाकुलः
Within that shade, the weary mind-deer rests, a lifelong traveler on a path crowded with noise.
सत्तामात्रात्मशारीरशर्मार्थं प्रेक्षितो ऽरिभिः । नानातासारम् आत्मानं गोपयन् कुञ्जकोन्मुखः
Observed by enemies for the sake of the body's happiness, which is merely existence, he guards himself, facing outward from the thicket, concealing his own essence, which is without variety.
संसारारण्यविसरद्वासनापवनेरितः । अहन्तातापसरिता सर्वदा विप्रलम्भितः
Driven by the wind of desires through the forest of worldly existence, he is always separated by the river of ego's heat.
दारदीर्घदरीदूरचिरसञ्चारजर्जरः । पुत्रपत्त्रपरामर्शप्रपातात् पतितो ऽवटे
Worn out by long journeys for wife and wealth, fallen into a pit from the cliff of attachment to children and leaves.
लक्ष्मीलताविलुठनात् सङ्कटे कुट्टिताङ्गकः । तृष्णाश्रीसरितं गृह्णन् कल्लोलैर् दूरम् आहृतः
Bruised in body from struggling with the vine of fortune in narrow places, carried far away by the waves while grasping the river of thirst and prosperity.
व्याधिदुर्व्याधवैधुर्यपलायनपरायणः । अशङ्कितविधिव्याधपातातिचकिताकृतिः
He is intent on fleeing from disease, misfortune, and adversity, his form ever startled by the sudden blows of fate and illness, unceasingly anxious.
गेयास्वादसमापातदुẖखसायकशङ्कितः । वैरिविद्रावणव्यग्रो दृषदाहननाङ्कितः
He is wary of the pain that swiftly follows the enjoyment of pleasures, preoccupied with driving away enemies, and marked by the scars of many harsh ordeals.
उन्नतानतसम्पातनिपातानतिघूर्णितः । न्यक्कारोपलनिर्घातैḫ पारम्पर्येण चूर्णितः
He is tossed about by rises and falls, by sudden gains and losses, and is crushed through generations by the blows of scorn and reproach.
तृष्णाशरलताजालप्रवेशवशविक्षतः । स्वप्रज्ञारचिताचारḫ परमायास्व् अशिक्षितः
He is wounded by being caught in the net of the fickleness of desire, and, following conduct shaped by his own limited understanding, he remains untrained in the highest wisdom.
इन्द्रियग्रामम् आगत्य प्रपलायनतत्परः । सुदुर्ग्रहगजेन्द्रोग्रविस्फूर्जनविमर्दितः
Having entered the village of the senses, he is ever intent on escape, battered like a wild elephant by the fierce blows of what is difficult to grasp.
विषयाजगरोद्गारविषफूत्कारमूर्छितः । कामकौलेयकैर् भूमौ रसार्द्रायां विपोथितः
He is stupefied by the venomous hissing of the serpent of sense-objects, and is struck down upon the moist earth by the blows of the offspring of desire.
कोपदावानलप्लुष्टस्पष्टविस्फोटदाहवान् । सदागतागतानेकदीर्घदुẖखप्रवाहवान्
He is scorched by the wildfire of anger, clearly bearing the blisters of its burning, and is always swept along by the long, recurring streams of manifold suffering.
स्वाङ्गलग्नाभिलाषांशदंशदोषैर् उपद्रुतः । भोगलोभलसन्मेदस्सृगालचिरविद्रुतः
He is afflicted by the faults that cling to his own limbs as fragments of desire, and, like a jackal long fleeing, is driven by the greed for enjoyment and the heat of delusion.
स्वकर्मकन्दरोद्वान्तदारिद्र्यद्वीप्यनुद्रुतः । व्यामोहमिहिकान्धत्वकूटावटलुठत्तनुः
Driven across the island of poverty by the upsurge of the pit of his own actions, his body rolls in the deep chasms of blindness caused by the fog of delusion.
मानसिंहसमुल्लासहृदयोत्कम्पनातुरः । मरणेनारणेयेन बुकपुष्पम् इवेक्षितः
Afflicted by the trembling of his heart, which is stirred by the roaring lion of the mind, he is watched by death, the forest-dweller, like a flower-bud.
गर्धान् निगरणायाशु दूरतो जनसेवितः । कामैस् समन्ततो दत्तचिन्तानिचयवागुरः
From afar, he is shunned by people, fearing he may be quickly swallowed by vultures; all around, he is ensnared by nets of anxious thoughts born of desires.
तारुण्यनाम्ना सुहृदा क्षणम् आलिङ्ग्य वर्जितः । दुस्सञ्चारेषु पवनैẖ कुपितैर् इव तर्जितः
For a moment, embraced by the friend called youth, he is then abandoned, threatened by fierce winds that are difficult to traverse, as if scolded.
कदाचिन् निर्वृतिं यातẖ क्षणं शमतरौ क्वचित् । मनोहरिणको राजन् राजीवम् इव भास्वति
O King, sometimes this deer of the mind attains peace for a moment, just as a lotus shines in the sun.
तालीतमालबकुलादिकवृक्षगुल्मविश्रान्तिषु प्रचुरपुष्पविलासहासैः । नामापि यस्य न विदन्ति सुखस्य मूढाḫ प्राप्नोति तच् छमतरोस् स्वमनोमृगो वः
In the resting places among groves of palm, tamala, bakula, and other trees, filled with the smiling display of abundant blossoms, the deluded do not even know the name of happiness; but your deer of the mind attains that tree of peace.
इति विश्रान्तिमान् एष मनोहरिणको ऽरिहन् । तत्रैव रतिम् आयाति न याति विटपान्तरम्
Thus, this deer of the mind, having found rest, delights there itself and does not go to another tree.
एतावताथ कालेन स विवेकद्रुमḫ फलम् । अन्तस्स्थं परमार्थात्म शनैḫ प्रकटयत्य् अलम्
Then, after some time, the tree of discernment gradually reveals its inner fruit, the supreme Self, in full clarity.
ध्यानद्रुमफलं पुण्यं तद् असौ स्वमनोमृगः । अधस्स्थितḫ प्रान्तगतं तस्य पश्यति सत्तरोः
That blessed fruit of the tree of meditation is seen by his own mind-deer, standing below, gazing up at the branch.
आरोहति ततो वृक्षं तद् आस्वादयितुं फलम् । अन्यगर्धपरित्यागे वितताध्यवसायवान्
Then, abandoning all other desires, with unwavering resolve, he climbs the tree to taste that fruit.
विवेकरसम् आक्रामन् वृत्तीस् त्यजति भूगताः । उत्तमं पदम् आसाद्य भूयो नाधस् समीहते
Attaining the essence of discernment, he leaves behind the tendencies that dwell below; having reached the highest state, he no longer longs for what is beneath.
तेनोत्तमफलार्थेन संस्कारान् प्राक्तनान् असौ । विवेकपदम् आरूढस् त्यजत्य् अहिर् इव त्वचम्
For the sake of that supreme fruit, he, having ascended to the state of discernment, casts off previous impressions like a serpent sheds its skin.
हसत्य् उच्चैḫ पदारूढम् आत्मानम् अवलोकयन् । एतावन्तम् अहं कालं कृपणẖ को ऽभवं त्व् इति
Beholding himself established in the highest state, he laughs aloud, saying, 'For so long, what a pitiable being I was!'
करुणादिषु तेष्व् अस्तभ्रमश् शाखान्तरेषु सः । लोभव्यालम् अधẖ कुर्वन् सम्राड् इव विराजते
Firm in compassion and other virtues, he shines like a sovereign, subduing the serpent of greed below, unshaken among the branches.
