Recognizing the seed of dispassion toward worldly existence that has fallen upon one's own field of mind, the great intellect should diligently protect the seed of meditation.
By giving the ramparts of austerity, by the sprinklings of actions for the sake of others, and by establishing the expanse of steadfastness through resting at holy places and shrines.
When this has sprouted, one must act as its protector, training the intention—always accompanied by the beloved named Contentment and ever joined with Joy.
One should ward off, from this, the birds of hope that linger behind and the birds of attachment to others, as well as the vultures of desire and pride that swoop down upon it.
The dust of passion and ignorance must be cleansed from us with gentle acts of honor, as if by the sunlight of discernment, and by the illumination of propriety.
Wealth and pleasures, like waves, are fragile enjoyments; they fall away in hunger, driven by the winds of misdeeds like clouds.
Those must be restrained by the spells of courage, generosity, and compassion, by recitation, bathing, austerity, and self-control, and by the meaning of the sacred syllable and the trident.
Thus, from the protected seed of meditation, there arises the new sprout called discernment, noble by birth and radiant with fortune.
By that, the field of the mind shines, both illuminated and unilluminated, and becomes delightful with light, like the sky with a new moon.
From that sprout, two leaves unfold by themselves: one is the approach to scripture, the other is the company of the virtuous.
Then it forms the stem, called steadfastness, lofty and adorned with the bark of contentment, colored by the flavor of detachment.
With its essence nourished by the flavor of detachment and enriched by the rains of scriptural meaning, it attains supreme elevation in a short time.
He, who is nourished by the essence of detachment, gained from contact with the noble and the meaning of the scriptures, is not shaken in the least by the agitations of the monkeys of attachment and aversion.
From him, whose form is adorned with knowledge, arise these creepers—delighting in the sap of virtue—that spread out in all directions.
Clarity, truthfulness, existence, courage, non-duality, equanimity, tranquility, friendliness, compassion, and noble conduct—these are proclaimed.
With these creepers as virtuous leaves, the tree of meditation flourishes; adorned with the flowers of fame, it becomes like the celestial pārijāta for the ascetic.
Thus, this tree of knowledge, bearing creepers, shoots, and blossoms, daily rises higher, yielding the future fruit of meditation.
Abundant with clusters of the flowers of fame, adorned with the play of virtuous shoots, spreading the essence of detachment, and formed with the buds of wisdom.
He cools all hopes, like a raincloud in the monsoon; he soothes the heat of worldly suffering, as the moon calms the sun’s burning rays.
He spreads the shade of tranquility, like the shadow cast by gathering clouds; he brings about restraint, as the wind stirs the water-laden cloud.
He establishes a seat with his own self, firm as a mountain of his lineage, and constructs above it a vessel adorned with auspiciousness for the fruit.
As the tree of discernment's fruit grows day by day, its shade spreads over the heart's forest of the person.
There arises a coolness, removing the heat from below, exceedingly radiant, beautiful within, and filled with the dust of pure wisdom.
Within that shade, the weary mind-deer rests, a lifelong traveler on a path crowded with noise.
Observed by enemies for the sake of the body's happiness, which is merely existence, he guards himself, facing outward from the thicket, concealing his own essence, which is without variety.
Driven by the wind of desires through the forest of worldly existence, he is always separated by the river of ego's heat.
Worn out by long journeys for wife and wealth, fallen into a pit from the cliff of attachment to children and leaves.
Bruised in body from struggling with the vine of fortune in narrow places, carried far away by the waves while grasping the river of thirst and prosperity.
He is intent on fleeing from disease, misfortune, and adversity, his form ever startled by the sudden blows of fate and illness, unceasingly anxious.
गेयास्वादसमापातदुẖखसायकशङ्कितः ।
He is wary of the pain that swiftly follows the enjoyment of pleasures, preoccupied with driving away enemies, and marked by the scars of many harsh ordeals.
