I am the clear space of consciousness, you are indeed space itself, and the entire world is space—everything is nothing but space.
With a self of pure knowledge alone, in a self made of pure knowledge, released from all states of other-knowing, I do not know anything else to speak of.
Those who are intent on promoting their own side, whose only bondage is the sense of 'I', even when striving for liberation, create a hundred branches of activity.
Whether living in tranquility or engaged in worldly dealings, when one abides like a corpse, that state is called the supreme goal.
That auspicious state is established where there is no external means, where there is peace, where there is no end or means, where there is evenness, where there is neither happiness nor unhappiness, neither 'I' nor anything else.
The absence of the sense of 'I' is the mark of liberation; it is attained by the cultivation of such awareness. By that alone, one investigates, just as a person blind from birth sees something remarkable.
Know that the state of remaining like a stone, whether in movement or stillness, belongs only to one who is not inert; that is the deathless state of nirvana.
And this is not known by another; it is experienced by oneself alone, just as knowledge is known in oneself by the wise who are not attached to worldly pursuits.
Here, there is no sense of 'I', nor of 'you', nor of 'I-ness', nor of otherness; there is only the state of pure being, which is nirvana, stainless and auspicious.
They say that the tendency of consciousness to turn toward objects is itself the consciousness of this mind; and this alone is samsara, bondage, and the cause of great suffering.
Know liberation as the supreme, peaceful, and imperishable state, where consciousness becomes inert, oriented toward non-cognition.
When the peaceful Self abides, unbounded by directions, time, and the like, cognition does not arise at all—who, what, and how could there be one who cognizes?
Just as, within the inner world of imagination and dream, nothing else exists apart from pure awareness, so too in the outward realm.
Mind, intellect, and the rest are forms of pure awareness; but when shaped by the meanings of words like 'mind' and 'intellect,' they become inert in nature.
In the pure, transparent sameness of awareness, both inner and outer, undivided, why does the notion of difference arise and expand, bringing misfortune?
What is the difference between pure awareness and emptiness? Whatever distinction the wise discern, it does not reach the realm of speech.
Just as some appearance is perceived as existent or non-existent, so too, through the effort of darkness, this world has entered into Brahman.
If I, who am this very space, become peaceful and free from tendencies, I do not bind myself to any tendency; I remain as the sky of consciousness.
Thus, though inwardly resolved and knowing that truth, outwardly he appears as if ignorant; the wise one, though present, becomes still as if nonexistent.
For living beings, the fire of ignorance, fanned by the wind of unawareness, burns secretly within; but for those awakened, that very fire is extinguished by the same means.
The ignorance in those who are not dull, when it subsides like inanimate things, is called liberation—calm, settled, and free from decline.
By attaining ignorance through knowledge, a human becomes a sage; by falling into ignorance from ignorance, one becomes like an animal or a tree.
The delusion, 'I am Brahman, this world is real,' is a product of ignorance; it is not attained by perception, just as darkness is not grasped by a lamp.
Even with all the senses intact, one who is free from thought and discrimination experiences nothing, either within or without, his mind at peace.
Just as a dream dissolves into deep sleep, so in samadhi all objects of perception merge; in the end, only the space-like Self is recognized within knowledge.
As the quality of being a platform is in space, so earth and the rest are in Shiva; apart from mere illusion, there is no other—just as space, so is Shiva.
Even though he is endowed with all tendencies, he is without any tendencies; for him, whose understanding is that all this is unreal.
Just as creations of thought—past, future, dream, illusion, magic—are only imagined, so too are worldly cycles; what reliance can you have even upon what is seen?
There is no suffering, no happiness, no merit, nor demerit; nothing is lost to anyone, since there is no doer or enjoyer.
All is void, without support; even the notion of 'mine' is like a city seen in a dream or a double moon—he for whom this is so, for us, does not exist.
