At the end of the aeon, aged and worn, cast down by the form of Time as a cuckoo, it became peaceful, arrived somewhere, and entered into disappearance.
There was the lord of immortals, Śakra, ruler of the three worlds, like the leader of petty ones seated around a pot of honey.
Through the practice of the teacher’s instruction, he became free of obstacles; a great soul, inwardly purified, foremost among those who know past and future.
Among Narayana and others, sometimes among those endowed with strength, sometimes among those withdrawn, that one alone was the lord of the gods.
He fought with the great demons, with eruptions of flame and weapons; conquered by those mighty heroes, he fled swiftly.
He ran with speed in all ten directions, pursued by enemies; he found no place to rest, like a lowly one in the other world.
When the enemies were in a disturbed state, he found a slight opening; bringing his intention to peace, he withdrew into his own inner self.
He entered a speck of dust situated in a ray of the sun, in the form of consciousness, just as a bee enters the lotus bud.
There he quickly rested, finding relief after a long time; then, having forgotten the battle, he attained contentment.
Thereupon, he immediately experienced a palace conjured up by imagination; in that palace, radiant like a lotus, he enjoyed himself as if in his own heavenly realm.
There, as a householder, Hari beheld a city conjured by imagination, with mansions and ramparts made of jewels, pearls, coral, and the like.
Entering the city, Hari then saw the surrounding region, filled with various mountains, villages, cattle-pens, towns, and forests.
With such a course of thought, that Indra conceived a world containing mountains, earth, rivers, quarters, and the divisions of time and action.
With such a course of thought, that Indra conceived the three worlds, with nether regions, earth, sky, celestial realms, sun, and other mountains.
There he remained as lord of the gods, adorned with the abundance of enjoyments; then, a son was born to him, named Kunda, of great valor.
Then, at the end of his life, blameless, he cast off his body; Indra attained liberation, like a lamp extinguished, free from attachment.
Kunda, having become the king of the three worlds and having begotten a virtuous son, at the end of his life attained the supreme state.
His son, in the same way, after installing his own son on the throne, at the end of his life reached the pure and supreme state.
In this way, thousands of grandsons have passed, O beautiful one, among whom even now a portion of the lord of the gods remains established in the kingdom.
Thus, up to today, this lineage of the lord of immortals, having been conceived in the world, establishes the line of succession; even if it is wounded, diminished, destroyed, or lost somewhere in the sky, it is purified by the rays of the sun.
In that lineage of Śakra there was someone, a lord of the gods by birth, who was endowed with excellent qualities and whose body was of the western region.
Then, to that son of the Indra-lineage, there arose there the attainment of intelligence and knowledge, as declared by the words of Bṛhaspati.
Then, being one to be known and having understood, acting according to what was obtained, he ruled the kingdoms of the worlds as the lord of those who offer oblations.
He fought together with the Dānavas and conquered all his enemies; having crossed beyond ignorance in his mind, he performed a hundred sacrifices.
By force of circumstances, he dwelt for a long time within the hollow of a lotus stalk, and experienced hundreds of other events as well.
Once, a desire arose in him, endowed with the power of awakening: 'I will contemplate the true nature of Brahman as it is.'
Then, established in solitude, with a mind calmed by the abandonment of all external and internal activities, he perceived through deep meditation.
He saw the supreme Brahman, all-powerful, pervading all things, always and everywhere everything, present in all, everywhere, all-pervading.
With hands and feet everywhere, with eyes, heads, and faces everywhere, with ears everywhere in the world, established, enveloping all.
Free from the qualities of all senses, yet possessing all the qualities of the senses; unattached, yet supporting all; without attributes, yet the enjoyer of attributes.
