Though observed, 'I-ness' is not found either within or without; this is the illusion, appearing as unreal, fleeing from its own gaze.
Whatever is unreal, like the water of a mirage, appears only upon examination; in the same way, the confusion of 'I-ness' and the rest is dissolved.
The seer, the seen, and the act of seeing are like a mirage of water—none of these truly exist for anyone; therefore, this peace and auspiciousness pervades all.
Thus, one who is firmly resolved, whose form transcends unity and duality, abides equally in the auspicious state, possessing great strength, having reached the fifth stage.
Remaining inwardly focused, though outwardly engaged, due to perfect tranquility, he always appears as if asleep.
In the dealings of the world, neither inside, nor in space, nor outside does he delight or wander; his mind dissolved, he is like space itself.
Like deep sleep while awake, perceiving the illusion of objects as absent, with the rise and fall of thoughts ceased, even awareness itself is recognized as internal; thus, the wise one stands, like a painted figure.
Practicing in this stage, having abandoned latent impressions, he gradually attains the sixth stage, called the 'fourth' (turyā).
There, there is neither non-existence nor the form of existence, neither 'I' nor absence of ego; only the one whose thoughts have faded remains, free from all latent tendencies.
Free from all knots, peaceful in essence, liberated while living, established in realization, shining once and pure, he abides beyond duality and unity.
The liberated while living, devoid of taste for worldly things, free from distinctions, beautiful like the sky, though not yet dissolved, is as steady as a lamp with varied colors.
Because he has no latent tendencies and is indifferent, he does nothing at all; even when he acts in this state, he remains truly a non-doer, like a piece of wood.
Endowed with true insight, having attained the state of liberation while living, seeing all this as it is, he is not bound by actions.
Acting, he does nothing; going, he does not go; enjoying, he does not enjoy; speaking, he does not speak.
Know, O Raghava, that the state of the liberated while living is like that of a person in a dream, regarding doership and enjoyership, while awake.
Equanimous, with a peaceful mind, silent, and free from latent impressions, the liberated while living sees the seer, the seeing, and the seen as one sees space.
With a mind absorbed in liberation, he sees himself, the supreme, a mountain, an atom, a body, a dog, a brahmin, the sun—everything—as he sees space.
Perfect, serene, appearing as the supreme, the one, the uncontrived—where does he set, where does he rise, what form does he have here?
Having ascended the palace of wisdom, he who is beyond sorrow grieves for people, just as one standing on a mountain sees all those on the ground below.
For him, there is no purpose in what is done or left undone here; nor does he depend on anything among all beings for any gain.
Having attained oneness with Brahman, like water poured into water, his appearance of duality has vanished; though awake, he is as if in deep sleep.
Though perceiving this entire moving and unmoving universe, he does not perceive it; with the sense of separateness gone, though seeing, he does not see.
Like the space within a broken pot merging with the vast sky, he has attained a state that is uniform, formless, and peaceful.
Though not yet fully dissolved, he is as if dissolved; he moves about like a child, free from notions of acceptance or rejection, established as a liberated being while living.
Even though all passions arising from attachment and aversion may enter him, they do not affect him, just as all animals and birds do not disturb the sky.
With the mist of ego and striving dissolved, his clear and expansive form shines, empty yet not empty, like the autumn sky.
When exhaustion has subsided and tranquility has arisen, it is as if a gentle coolness has come; lying in deep sleep on the earth, he seems to have been carried to heaven.
Immersed solely in bliss, he has reached a state beyond pleasure; being of the nature of pure awareness alone, he appears as if devoid of awareness.
Like an ocean without Mandara mountain, like fire with all fuel consumed, like a wheel whose motion has ceased, he has attained perfect stillness in his own self.
Like a machine crafted by the divine artisan, he has assumed a form never seen before; like a tree at the change of seasons, he is the same yet appears in a new way.
