Then, in just a moment, on that auspicious and level jewel peak, the two of them made heaps rich with flowers for the ceremony.
Those heaps of garlands, garments, and precious jewels shone forth, as if they were treasuries of good fortune amassed by desire and time.
Then, having gathered the necessary items for bathing, the two great friends went to the golden cave to bathe in the Mandakini river.
There, with due reverence, a water pot—like the shoulder of an elephant—was used to bathe the great king, accompanied by auspicious rites.
He then bathed Chudala, who had taken the form of a water pot and would become his future wife, appearing in the form of a future woman.
Having bathed, the two performed worship there for the gods, ancestors, and sages, just as those who do not desire the fruits of action perform and then renounce the act.
Always satisfied by the essence of knowledge, yet for the sake of maintaining worldly order, the two noble ones prepared food, each serving the other.
Clad in white garments made from the fiber of the wish-fulfilling tree, they ate fruits and gradually returned to their dwelling.
In this way, as time passed for those two, eager for their ascetic practice, the sun swiftly entered the western mountain, as if to do something dear for them.
Then, as evening approached and the recitation for removing sin was performed, the stars appeared in the sky as if to witness a wedding.
The night, companion of Mithuna and smiling with the blossoming of lotuses, arrived, scattering clusters of icy dew.
Kumbha arranged many jeweled lamps, just as the lotus-born one would set in the sky lights joined with the moon and sun.
As night ended, assuming a woman's form, he adorned the king with full measures of sandalwood, aloe, camphor, and musk saffron.
He decorated him with necklaces, armlets, bracelets, as well as with garlands of wish-fulfilling creepers, wreaths, ear-ornaments, and various splendid floral arrangements.
Likewise, with clusters of wish-fulfilling creepers, mandara and parijata flowers, santana blossoms with many gems, and a moon-like diadem.
Then, after some time, Kumbha attained the state of a bride, her breasts full and prominent, and quickly became charming and graceful.
She thought to herself: 'Now I am a bride, accomplished; my body belongs to desire, and I must act according to the proper time.'
'I am this beloved bride, and here stands my husband before me; come, take me, for this is the time for your heart's longing.'
Thinking thus, Rati, adorned and standing before her husband, approached him as if he were the rising sun, just as desire approaches passion.
I am Madanikā by name, your wife, O honorable one; this salutation is offered to you by me with affection.
Having spoken thus, she of flawless limbs, her face lowered in modesty, bowed to her husband with her head, her loose hair falling forward.
She also said: O lord, adorn me with ornaments, and then, having kindled the sacred fire, take my hand in marriage.
O lord, you make me exceedingly passionate; in this wedding of Rati, you surpass even the god of love in mastery.
O king, your garlands shine like the rays of the moon, and the necklace on your chest resembles the flow of the Ganges from Mount Meru.
O king, your hair, adorned with mandāra flowers, shines like a golden lotus surrounded by bees dusted with pollen, restless in their movement.
With rays of jewels, flowers, splendor, steadfastness, and brilliance, and by your greatness, O lord, you stand surpassing even Mount Meru.
Thus, as they spoke in this manner, the two who were to become husband and wife—whose union was previously concealed—became mutually content.
King Śikhidhvaja himself adorned Queen Madanikā, seating her upon a spotless golden couch.
He decorated her with ear ornaments, garlands, jeweled and pearl adornments, garments, perfumes, and flowers, each placed in its proper location.
She shone, slender and adorned, intoxicating and bestowing delight, like Pārvatī eager for marriage, or a passionate beloved longing for her lover.
