The perception of objects is false; it merely appears as if real. By this alone, the sense of 'I' and so on is quieted—I remain at peace, like the sky within a pot.
The vision of the world's objects as divided, along with the streams of space, direction, time, and action—indeed, after a long time, all has become peaceful, or truly, only Brahman remains.
I am at peace, extinguished, established in the highest; I neither go nor rise nor set. I remain unmoved, as my nature abides, auspicious, pure, and sacred silence am I.
Thus, having attained repose in Brahman, King Shikhidhvaja sat for a moment with his mind completely tranquil, like a lamp in nirvana.
Through the culmination of absorption in the non-dual state, he entered dissolution by his own play, and was suddenly awakened by Kumbha.
O King, you have awakened from the sleep of ignorance and stand established in auspiciousness; for you, there is nothing to be gained or lost by the setting or not setting of anything.
Once the self has become manifest, it remains as the state beyond steadiness or unsteadiness, free from all calculation and imagination; O dear one, you are now liberated while living.
Thus awakened by Kumbha, he became fully conscious, having emerged from the great cave of delusion, and shone forth brilliantly.
His mind instantly at rest, seeing the unreality of the visible world, the liberated one spoke playfully.
Though I have understood nearly everything, tell me what I now ask, O honor-giver, destroyer of delusion, for the sake of deeper understanding.
In the auspicious, peaceful, formless, supreme, untransgressed Self—how can there arise the conviction of the universe as the seer, seeing, and seen?
Well asked, O great king! You shine with the radiance of understanding. This alone remains for you to know; therefore, listen to this.
Whatever is seen in this world, whether moving or unmoving, all, rich in every form, perishes at the end of the cycle.
Then, in profound stillness, neither light nor darkness remains; at the end of the great cycle’s play, only the true essence is left.
Pure consciousness alone, spotless, radiant, shining like the flawless sky, free from all distinctions, endowed with supreme glory.
That which arises alone, utterly clear, peaceful, all-pervading, brilliant—the supreme Self, tranquil, consisting only of awareness.
It is beyond reasoning, unknowable, equal, auspicious, without blemish—Brahman, nirvana, complete, as if filled with abundance.
It is subtler than the subtlest, greater than the greatest, heavier than the heaviest, and the highest among all that is excellent.
That supreme subtle reality is such that, in its presence, this expanse of space appears beside it like Mount Meru appears beside an atom—vast and gross.
That supreme gross reality is such that, in its presence, this world appears like an ultimate atom—sometimes it seems to exist, sometimes not at all.
That greatest, unbroken sovereignty of the world, when truly understood as pure and peaceful, appears as trivial as withered grass or chaff.
That supreme good is such that, when it is present in the Lord, the wealth of all worldly objects and their essence arises from the awareness of one's own being.
O King, here there exists only that one essence, pervading all; grasped with undivided understanding as one, it is not even one, due to the reality of non-duality.
Therefore, there is truly no such thing as a second entity; the essence of the Self alone shines, ever full and unbroken.
It is ever established as all, appearing in every form; yet, being inexpressible and unattainable, it is neither effect nor cause.
Since it cannot be reached by perception or the like, that supreme reality is something unique—subtle, all-pervading, the very essence of pure experience.
How can that which has no name or form, which has emerged from the state of heedlessness, whether existent or non-existent, become a cause?
Since it is not the seed of anything, due to its namelessness it is not a cause; therefore, nothing arises from that whose nature transcends all measure.
It is true, consciousness alone, undivided and unbroken, without agent, action, or instrument; the form of the Self, without appearance, characterized by self-awareness.
Therefore, nothing arises from the supreme Brahman, O sage; how could there ever be a sequence of cause and effect in the unmanifest?
