This mind alone appears as the entire world, manifesting in forms such as body and so on, just as a seed appears as a tree with its network of branches.
Just as a tree is moved by the wind, or a mountain by an earthquake, or a bellows by a bellows-blower, so this body is moved by the mind.
Know the mind to be the strong casket of all the great jewels—namely, the experiences of all beings, and of old age, death, and birth.
O sage, the mind is called the living being, the intellect, illusion, and life-force; it is referred to by these and other terms, according to its various activities and functions.
They say that everything is mind; when that is abandoned, O king, all afflictions and their limits are left behind, and complete renunciation is accomplished.
Those who know the abandonment of mind understand it as the highest renunciation; when this is attained, O mighty-armed one, what truth remains to be realized by anyone?
When the mind is abandoned, duality everywhere dissolves into unity; then, for anyone, there remains only peace—pure, single, and free from affliction.
They know the mind to be the field for the endless crop of worldly existence; but when the field itself is gone, how can the rice plant arise?
Here, the mind alone manifests as the play of existence and non-existence, transforming into objects, just as water takes the form of waves.
Through the complete abandonment that is the dissolution of mind, O king, everything is truly attained—just as with universal sovereignty, all is ever possessed.
Just as there is a distinct object for complete renunciation, so too, O king, if you accept something, you become someone else's; you are not a true renouncer.
Like a thread running through pearls, the web of the world, existing in all three times, is entirely pervaded within by that which has abandoned all.
He by whom everything is abandoned, though established in emptiness, upholds the entire world existing in past, present, and future, as a thread holds pearls.
By that one, as by a lamp with oil, all is illuminated; having abandoned everything, he remains, peaceful, like a lamp without oil.
By one who is like a lamp without oil, all is concealed; yet he shines, of the nature of light, impartial, like a lamp with oil.
When all objects are removed, space alone remains; so too, when everything is renounced, such knowledge alone remains.
Just as space is indifferent to all things, O king, and not otherwise, so too, only by complete renunciation is liberation said to be attained.
Complete renunciation, though of the nature of emptiness, is the support of all riches, like this sky is for the gods—vast and noble.
For those who have drunk the nectar of complete renunciation, the fears of old age and death do not trouble them at all, just as streaks of dirt do not cling to the sky.
Complete renunciation is the cause of greatness and pure radiance; for space abandons everything, and thus it is pure, steady, and vast.
Complete renunciation is supreme bliss; all else is intense suffering. Therefore, having embraced 'Om', act as you wish.
For the one who abandons everything, all things come to him; just as water enters fire, so too does it return to the ocean.
Within complete renunciation alone is the knowledge that brings clarity to the self; just as in the emptiness of a vessel, jewels and such can be placed.
It is solely by the power of complete renunciation that, even at the end of an age, the sage Shakya remained unshaken like Mount Meru, free from all fear.
O great king, complete renunciation is the abode of all prosperity; for the one who grasps nothing, everything is given.
Having performed total abandonment, you become peaceful, pure, and like the sky; O king, become of that very nature—gentle and serene.
Renounce everything, O great one; abandon even the act by which you renounce. Let go of the very idea of renunciation and its means, and become free in essence, O ruler of the earth.
As Kumbha spoke thus, repeatedly urging the abandonment of the mind, the gentle king reflected inwardly and replied.
My mind, like a bird in the sky of the heart or a monkey in the tree of the heart, though driven away again and again, keeps returning to me.
I know not how to seize it, like a restless fish eluding a child; nor do I know how to renounce it, which seems strange, like something excellent to a blind man.
