The fifth, mental silence, when present in the ascetic who is like a log after death, becomes known as the silence of deep sleep; but in the living liberated, it exists while alive.
Among the three special kinds of silence, the domain belongs to the ascetic like a log, to the state of deep sleep silence, and to the fourth, the liberated mind.
Speech silence is indeed called silence, but it is tainted by the activity of the mind; it binds the living being, and those ascetics like logs remain in it.
By force or by yogic method, whoever restrains his own senses, that is called sense silence, say those ascetics like logs who dwell in it.
Whether not remembering or remembering, or not touching the duality of speech, or not seeing even while seeing, the ascetic in log-like silence remains thus.
This threefold silence, which is the activity of the mind that flickers, is remembered; it occurs among ignorant sages, but not among those who are wise, for whom it happens effortlessly.
There is no necessity for knowledge here; this threefold silence, indeed, the wise may practice playfully or negligently, or may not practice at all.
This silence of deep sleep is established in the living liberated; listen, O ornament of listeners, it is for the creature who will not be reborn.
Here, speech is neither restrained nor abandoned in its threefold forms; all the functions of the senses neither arise nor are suppressed.
This is not the play of diversity; it neither flourishes nor ceases; the mind is not mind, nor not-mind, not being, not non-being, not space, nor earth.
That which is indivisible, effortless, beginningless and endless, and remains whether one contemplates or moves about—O dear one, that is the silence of deep sleep.
Having realized this as it truly is—the bewilderment of the world's diversity—what remains, untouched and unattached, O dear one, is the silence of deep sleep.
This alone, pervading as the one essence of the many forms of consciousness, is what remains infinite—O dear one, that is the silence of deep sleep.
Neither space nor not-space, I am all and yet not all—what abides thus, even and peaceful, is that silence like deep sleep.
All is void, without support, peaceful, mere awareness; not being nor non-being—what remains thus established is the supreme silence.
That awareness which is untouched by the false distinctions of arising and ceasing, of existence and non-existence—they know that as the highest silence.
When the movement of the mind, whether towards the unreal or the real, ceases to recur, that unbroken awareness is the imperishable silence.
When there is the awareness that 'I am not, nor is there another, nor mind, nor anything mental,' this uninterrupted recognition is the supreme silence.
When there is the sense 'I exist, the world exists, you exist'—merely as the meaning of the word 'existence,' and only as the commonality of being—this is called the silence of deep sleep.
Since all dream-like imaginations arise only from consciousness, how could they exist apart from it? Deep sleep is infinite, and thus all is pervaded by silence.
This silence of deep sleep, due to its infinitude, is like awakening; know it as the pure fourth state, or even beyond the fourth.
The samadhi of deep sleep, the samadhi of the fourth state, or the samadhi beyond the fourth, may also occur even while awake.
Remaining established in the fourth state, with all impurities and disturbances pacified, one acts skillfully even while awake or asleep; whether with body or without, become the divine sky—that alone you are, O noble one.
Abandoning all tendencies toward becoming, rest in the one—'neither you nor I exist, nothing here is true.' Stand as the knower, like a stone within, established solely in the space of consciousness, where all is known.
From where has the hundredfold nature of the Rudras arisen, O leader of sages? Are those groups truly Rudras or not? Tell me.
A hundred forms, each with a hundred bodies, were seen by the ascetic in a dream; all were known in detail, but I did not speak of them.
Whatever forms appeared in the dream as a hundred, those are remembered as a hundred groups; those very groups are called a hundred Rudras, and Rudras are also referred to as groups.
How was a hundredfold mind produced from one mind, O revered one? It was by the hundred Rudras of the dream, just as a hundred lamps arise from one lamp.
Whatever those who possess unobstructed existence imagine in whatever way, it quickly comes to be just so; not so for those whose consciousness is obstructed.
Because the Self is all and everywhere, whatever is conceived, wherever, is experienced there in just that way by the one who knows it, without doubt.
