The senses attain firm withdrawal, just as a tortoise withdraws its limbs, from their objects into the heart, by the nature of the knower.
On the thread of pure consciousness, fully extended and firm, the world, woven with existence and non-existence, is established like a garland, in the body of the universe, by the universal creator.
When it is spread out, it expands; when it is withdrawn, it disappears—this intricate web of creation, in the unique canopy of consciousness.
Though not other, it appears as other, taking the form of its own limbs, like the bodiless; this world stands as a wondrous canopy in consciousness.
Just as a painting, created by an artist, remains established in the artist’s mind, so too the manifested and the unmanifested universe abides in the Self.
As a painting to be made appears vividly in the mind of the painter, so does the universe—arising through the threefold time—shine forth in the universal Self.
The mind, acting as the painter, creates the picture of the three worlds upon the canvas, and even in space, which is of the nature of space itself, it appears distinctly through the modifications of the mind.
By the mind, the painter, the painting is first spread out, and only afterwards is the canvas, which is of the nature of space, imagined—oh, what a wonder this delusion is!
Indeed, this is an unprecedented and extraordinary illusion, where between space and the wall there is not the slightest difference, even though both are clearly perceived.
These walls that are observed, born of the mind’s painting, know them, O lotus-eyed one, to be of the nature of space, as mere emptiness.
Just as in a moment, the rise and fall of worlds appear in the mind, so too does this universe, with its inner and outer expanse, exist in space, whose essence is the sky.
In this realm, which is merely the ancient kingdom of imagination, how could there be reality, even when it is perceived? In delusion, there is truly no reality at all.
The truth, when seen through delusion, is dissolved by that very perception; even what appears is insubstantial, like an autumn cloud in the sky.
Figures painted by the mind remain within the mind, like painted dolls; lacking any real support, even the worlds outside are without foundation.
These things do not exist, nor do you exist as such—so what is bound, and by whom? Abandon the confusion of bondage and liberation, and be pure like the sky.
What activity can there be for space, whose very nature is inactivity? Therefore, the pure sky is untouched by walls of time, action, or anything else.
Just as a picture, though real, exists only within the mind and is of the nature of space, so too, know that this entire world is of the emptiness of space.
The picture made on the canvas of the mind by the painter of consciousness is, in its emptiness, not at all different from space.
Just as creation and dissolution of the world occur instantly in the mind, so too, know that these (processes) outside happen in the same way, O dear one.
In the first instant of the kingdom of thought, countless worlds are imagined; through the delusion of momentary existence, their reality is merely supposed.
Just as the mind is able to create an unreal kingdom of imagination, so too is the mind powerful in making a moment seem like an age.
This mind turns a moment into an age, makes the small into much, swiftly makes the unreal seem real—thus this delusion arises.
By its very nature, the mind’s first imagined kingdom appears as a moment; that which is of varied essence stands as this web of the world.
Creation, being rooted in liberation, arises in a blink of an eye; here, mere imagination is taken as having the solidity of a diamond.
This wondrous world, made by the painting of the mind and abiding in consciousness, stands here like a vast, splendid stage, though it is not truly a hall.
Indeed, how marvelous is this vivid, wall-less painting that has arisen—this world, delightful to the gods, stands as a spectacle that captivates the eye.
It is adorned with many lines of shadow and light, colored by many rays of brilliance, composed of various spotless parts, and tinged with many hues.
It is rich with many displays for the eyes, seen in countless ways, constructed with many dense clouds, and has countless forms, both foremost and final.
The sky is a pond, with blossoming lotuses of stars, moon, and sun; adorned with the marvelous arrangements of clouds as petals and clusters.
Within its own chamber are inscribed the daughters of gods, demons, and men; it is the supreme realm, with walls of pure, luminous space.
