Just as the stirring of various foods arises from the boiling water within a pot, so too, within living atoms, the apparent cycle of worldly existence arises falsely.
Its bondage is the presence of latent tendencies; liberation is the exhaustion of those tendencies. From these tendencies arise its states of deep sleep and dream.
This mass of delusive tendencies is called the self of deep sleep, regarded as inert; within it, inevitably, dreams arise from what lies inside.
The living being, overcome by the sleep of tendencies, perceives confusion; when the sleep of tendencies is exhausted, then he awakens.
The delight in objects, spoken of as arising from tendencies, does not truly exist; just as the form of a bracelet does not exist in gold, so in the all-pervading Self, there is nothing but the Self.
From ignorance, this has arisen and is dissolved; from awakening, it is resolved. For you, its rise and fall depend solely on the exhaustion of latent tendencies.
Having dispelled the dense delusion of one's own latent tendencies, one enters deep sleep; then, upon attaining subtle impressions, one perceives the dream of worldly existence.
This dense delusion of latent impressions causes the soul to take the state of immovable beings and so on; with intermediate impressions, it becomes an animal, and with subtle impressions, a human.
When, inwardly, the soul is experienced as the living principle, and outwardly, as pots and other objects, then, due to the unity of the soul, the existence of both the perceiver and the perceived arises.
When the Self is embraced by the Self, both outwardly and inwardly as consciousness, then the cognition of perceiver and perceived arises, like a mirage appearing.
Here, nothing is abandoned and nothing is grasped; the one consciousness-self, appearing as the forms of inner and outer, alone shines forth.
The three worlds are but a wonder of consciousness; enough of the distinctions of difference. We are only consciousness, known by consciousness; we know nothing else, whether external or otherwise.
Just as the pure water of the ocean, free from all distinctions, is entirely sweet, clear, and a single pure fluid, so too is this supreme, original, and flawless state—free from all forms of difference—known as the highest, peaceful abode.
That dream of the soul, which arises adorned with various imaginations—know that as this worldly existence; it is neither real nor entirely unreal.
Just as a man does not dream while awake, so too, for the individual soul, there is never a dream; therefore, all these waking phenomena are, in truth, a unity of waking and dream.
This long dream of the individual soul sometimes appears brief; though unreal, due to its lack of substance, know this, O best of the wise, to be so.
Passing from one dream to another, the living beings perceive what is unreal as if it were solid reality, and do so for a long time.
The non-inert has come to possess inertness, and in inertness, non-inertness arises; truth appears in the unreal, due to the delusion of individual experience.
Even within a motionless object, seeing the entire world’s illusion, the living beings, whose hearts are bewildered by dream, wander here in confusion.
Because the consciousness of the infinite self is all-pervading, whatever the individual soul imagines or thinks, that alone quickly attains the status of reality.
Embracing that pure, unattached state described by the lotus-eyed Lord, O mighty-armed one, the great sage is liberated while living.
Arjuna, son of Pandu, will live his life happily and free from sorrow; in the same way, live your life free from suffering.
O Brahman, when will Arjuna, the joy of the Pandus, arise, and what kind of detachment will Hari describe to him?
There exists pure being, called 'self' by convention, abiding in itself without beginning or end, like vast space in the sky.
Within that clear expanse, this confusion of worldly existence is seen, as ornaments in gold, or waves in water.
The fourteen kinds of elemental beings arise abundantly within this net of worldly existence, like birds in a net.
There, those who are called Yama, Moon, Sun, Indra, and others, follow the course of transmigration, attaining guardianship of worlds through the arrangement of the five elements.
This is merit to be accepted, this is sin to be rejected—such is the order established by them through their own resolve, confirmed by the Veda.
As this matured state continues for a long time, unbroken and perishable, like a river, so does the existence of the world.
Vaivasvata, named Yama, is a powerful guardian of the world, established in restraining beings marked by mortality.
