मनो हि सर्वभूतानां प्रसादम् अनुगच्छति । न तथेन्दौ यथा शान्ते जने जनितकौतुकम्
The mind naturally follows after the serenity of all beings; not even the moon evokes such wonder as a peaceful person does among people.
शमशालिनि सौहार्दवति सर्वेषु जन्तुषु । सुजने परमं तत्त्वं स्वयम् एव प्रसीदति
In one who is established in tranquility and goodwill toward all creatures, the highest truth reveals itself spontaneously.
मातरीव परं यान्ति विषमाणि मृदूनि च । विश्वासम् इह भूतानि सर्वाणि शमशालिनि
Just as with a mother, all beings—whether harsh or gentle—place their trust in one who is tranquil.
न रसायनपानेन न लक्ष्म्यालिङ्गनेन च । तथा सुखम् अवाप्नोति शमेनान्तर् यथा जनः
Not by drinking elixirs, nor by embracing fortune, does one attain such happiness as a person does through inner tranquility.
सर्वाधिव्याधिवलितं क्रान्तं तृष्णावरत्रया । मनश् शमामृतासेकैस् समाश्वासय राघव
O Raghava, comfort the mind, afflicted by all kinds of ailments and bound by the cords of craving, with the nectar-stream of tranquility.
यत् करोषि यद् अश्नासि शमशीतलया धिया । तत् ते ऽतिस्वदते स्वादु नेतरत् तात मानसे
Whatever you do, whatever you eat, when done with a mind cooled by tranquility, that alone tastes supremely sweet to you, my dear—not otherwise, in the mind.
शमामृतरसस्नातं मनो याम् एति निर्वृतिम् । छिन्नान्य् अपि तयाङ्गानि मन्ये रोहन्ति राघव
O Raghava, when the mind, bathed in the nectar of tranquility, attains contentment, I believe that even limbs once severed are restored by it.
न पिशाचा न रक्षांसि न दैत्या न च शत्रवः । न च व्याघ्रभुजङ्गाद्या द्विषन्ति शमशालिनम्
Neither spirits, nor demons, nor daityas, nor enemies, nor tigers, serpents, and the like, bear enmity toward one who abides in tranquility.
सुसन्नद्धसमस्ताङ्गं प्रशमामृतवर्मणा । वेधयन्ति न दुःखानि शरा वज्रशिलाम् इव
When one is fully protected by the armor of the nectar of tranquility, sorrows cannot pierce him, just as arrows cannot penetrate a stone of diamond.
न तथा राजते राजामात्यान्तःपुरसंस्थितः । समया स्वस्थया वृत्त्या यथोपशमशोभितः
A king, even when surrounded by ministers and the women of his inner palace, does not shine as much as one adorned by the beauty of tranquility and steady conduct.
प्राणात् प्रियतरं दृष्ट्वा तुष्टिम् एति न तां जनः । याम् आयाति जनं शान्तम् अवलोक्य समाशयम्
People do not experience the same joy from seeing something dearer than life itself as they do upon seeing a person who is peaceful and composed.
समया शमशालिन्या वृत्त्या यस् साधु वर्तते । अभिनन्दितया लोके जीवतीह स नेतरः
He who lives rightly, with a tranquil and disciplined way of life, is truly alive in this world, honored by all—none else is so.
अनुद्धतमनाश् शान्तस् साधु कर्म करोति यत् । तत् सर्वम् अभिनन्दन्ति तस्येमा भूतजातयः
Whatever good deed is performed by one whose mind is humble and peaceful, all beings in this world rejoice in it.
श्रुत्वा स्पृष्ट्वा च दृष्ट्वा च भुक्त्वा घ्रात्वा शुभाशुभम् । न हृष्यति ग्लायति यस् स शान्त इति कथ्यते
He who, upon hearing, touching, seeing, eating, or smelling what is pleasant or unpleasant, neither rejoices nor is dejected—he is called peaceful.
यस् समस् सर्वभावेषु नाभिवाञ्छति नोज्झति । जित्वेन्द्रियाणि यत्नेन स शान्त इति कथ्यते
He who is equal in all situations, neither desiring nor rejecting, and who has conquered his senses through effort—he is called peaceful.
तुषारकरबिम्बाच्छं मनो यस्य निराकुलम् । मरणोत्सवयुद्धेषु स शान्त इति कथ्यते
He whose mind is as clear and undisturbed as the disk of the autumn moon, even amid death, celebration, or battle—he is called peaceful.
स्थितो ऽपि न स्थित इव न हृष्यति न कुप्यति । यस् सुषुप्तमनास् स्वस्थस् स शान्त इति कथ्यते
He who, though remaining in place, appears as if not settled, who neither rejoices nor becomes angry, whose mind is as in deep sleep and is at ease—he is said to be tranquil.
अमृतस्यन्दसुभगा यस्य सर्वजनं प्रति । दृष्टिः प्रसरति प्रीता स शान्त इति कथ्यते
He whose gaze, delightful like the flow of nectar, extends with affection toward all people—he is said to be tranquil.
स्पष्टावदातया बुद्ध्या यथैवान्तस् तथा बहिः । दृश्यन्ते यस्य कार्याणि स शान्त इति कथ्यते
He whose actions, both inwardly and outwardly, are seen with a mind that is clear and pure—he is said to be tranquil.
अप्य् आपत्सु दुरन्तासु कल्पान्तेषु दहत्स्व् अपि । तुच्छेहं न मनो यस्य स शान्त इति कथ्यते
He whose mind remains insignificant and unaffected, even amid dire calamities or at the end of an age, even when all is burning—he is said to be tranquil.
अन्तश्शीतलतां यातो यो भावेषु न मज्जति । व्यवहारी न सम्मूढस् स शान्त इति कथ्यते
He who has attained inner coolness, who does not sink into the states of mind, who acts in the world without confusion—he is said to be tranquil.
आकाशसदृशी यस्य नित्यं स्वव्यवहारिणः । कलङ्कम् एति न मतिस् स शान्त इति कथ्यते
He whose mind, always engaged in his own actions, remains as spotless as the sky—he is said to be tranquil.
तपस्विषु बहुज्ञेषु याजकेषु नृपेषु च । बलवत्सु गुणाढ्येषु शमवान् एव राजते
Among ascetics, the learned, the sacrificers, kings, the strong, and the virtuous, it is the one endowed with tranquility who truly shines.
शमसंसक्तमनसां महतां गुणशालिनाम् । उदेति निर्वृतिश् चित्ताज् ज्योत्स्नेव हिमरोचिषः
In the minds of the great, endowed with virtues and absorbed in tranquility, contentment arises from consciousness like moonlight from the cool-rayed moon.
सीमान्तो गुणपूगानां पौरुषैकान्तभूषणम् । सङ्कटेष्व् अभयस्थानं शमश् श्रीमान् विराजते
Equanimity, the boundary of all virtues, the unique ornament of true manliness, the place of fearlessness in difficulties, shines forth, resplendent.
शमम् अमृतम् अहार्यम् आर्यजुष्टं परम् अवलम्ब्य पदं परं प्रयाताः । रघुतनय यथा महानुभावाः क्रमम् अनुपालय सिद्धये तम् एव
Rama, just as the great ones attained the highest state by relying on supreme, immortal, unstealable, noble-favored equanimity, so too you should steadily follow that path for success.
शास्त्रावबोधामलया धिया परमपूतया । कर्तव्यः कारणज्ञेन विचारो नियतात्मना
One who knows the causes, with a mind purified by the clear understanding of scripture, and with self-control, must undertake inquiry.
विचारात् तीक्ष्णताम् एत्य धीः पश्यति परं पदम् । दीर्घसंसाररोगस्य विचारो हि महौषधम्
Through inquiry, the intellect becomes sharp and perceives the supreme state; for inquiry is indeed the great medicine for the long-standing disease of worldly existence.
आपद्वनम् अनन्तेहापरिपल्लविताकृति । विचारक्रकचच्छिन्नं नैव भूयः प्ररोहति
The forest of calamity, whose forms are nourished by endless desires, once cut down by the saw of inquiry, does not grow again.
मोहेषु बन्धुनाशेषु सङ्कटेषु भ्रमेषु च । सर्वेष्व् एव महाप्राज्ञ विचारो हि सतां गतिः
In delusions, loss of relatives, hardships, and confusions, in all such situations, inquiry is truly the path of the wise.
